It’s only Feb 2nd.

Today was a great day… Here we are in the second day of the second month in North Eastern Utah… Dead of Winter.  Snow is usually measured in Feet…

And today I rode my motorcycle, got my first Prairie Dog Kill of the year, and had a Pelican Burger.  Awesome Day.

The ride was just a couple miles at the most… from where my Bike was parked to the Shop where it’s getting a new chain and tire and some general servicing.  The rear tire is completely bald and squared off from all the miles I put on it last year… starting out with a brand spanking new set of tires.   That’s a lot of miles.  I hope to put on a lot more this year.

While at Beers Harley Davidson, I took a look at some of the bikes for sale.  The Honda Fury is still there.  Give me a million bucks and my first Splurge Purchase would be that.  But there was a Harley there that caught my eye too.  One I’ve never seen before but is evidently old hat to a lot of people… The XR1200X.  It’s a classic Harley, but set up as a Standard and not a Cruiser or Touring bike.  But it has something the other Harley’s don’t.  Lean Angle.  I don’t know why… I can’t explain it… But I really really like that bike.  To the point that I want one.  It’s about the same price as the Honda Fury, or close enough so that price doesn’t matter.  But it looks like the XR1200X would be a better Daily Driver.

The Prairie Dog kill was fun.  Fenris and I just kinda rolled around one of our desert areas.  He got the first one of the year.  Then the next two.  Then I finally got one myself.  About a 60 yard thump with my Savage 93R17, Killswitch.  I would have had more, but the magazine self destructed.  The feedlips decided to go in two different directions.  This turned Killswitch into one of the worlds most awkward single shot rifle.   I need a new magazine, and I need to put it on paper and get it fine tuned adjusted again.

The Pelican Lake Cafe remains awesome.  I had an Ouray Burger there… which is two thin patties stuffed with onions and cheese… filling the burger full of flavor.  It was very good.

All in all… a very satisfying day.  And it’s only Feb 2nd.  This is shaping up to be a great year.

Springfield’s XD .45 Tactical

The other day I was shooting with The Fellas, and my buddy gave me a loaded magazine and an empty pistol.  The XD Tactical in .45.  He had stippled the gun the same way I did my Glock… and I have to say that it really improved the feel.  I also have to say that the pistol shot extremely well and was uncannily accurate.  This was the old XD model, not a newer M class.  But in the .45 guns, there’s not a lot of difference.  Same Mags, same cold hammer forged barrels… the M triggers are nicer, and of course, the outside cosmetics.  But I don’t like the way the M’s feel slippery in my hands.  Some texturing work fixes that real easy.
Now, I respect the XD’s and know they are all very good guns… but I’m not particularly fond of them.  This one though… I like it.  The XDM’s I think are a bit better and I like them more.  If anyone out there are thinking of getting an M model… it is a good buy.  Especially the long barreled versions if you are looking for an accurate, easy gun to shoot, with a lot of capacity.
While I’m not going to line up to buy one… if any of The Horde does, it would be a good choice.

Sidekicks.

Forget the normal politics of the Primaries… Let’s look at the possible Sidekick options.  I mean, who is capable of filling Joe Biden’s shoes?  The man has been an ICON.  He has offered so much for all of us to enjoy.  Who can do this? Who can be a Presidential Comedic Sidekick?

Dennis Miller?  No, he’s too smart.
Larry the Cable Guy?  No, because he’d just rip the sleeves off his suits.
Bill Engvall?   Hmmm… He’s naturally funny… smart enough to get the job done and make light of everything around him… Maybe we should get Bill Engvall as the Vice President.

(No insult to Bill…. I love that guy.)

Emails like this make my day

I love it when I get an email like this...
After having one of those days, this really picks me up.
Mr. Hill,Just wanted to send a quick e-mail. After listening to the Gunfighter Cast podcast that you were on I ordered BOTH Uprising USA and Uprising UK and finished them both on less than a week. I am now waiting patiently for the next book. I also ordered Slipstream in both grease and oil from Crusader Weaponry that should be here next week. I look forward to spending thousands of rounds evaluating Slipstream in all my firearms.

I am now a proud follower of both WeTheArmed.com and MadOgre.com.

Keep up the awesome work.

Thanks, Doug.

The New Winchester SXP’s

The new Winchester SXP Pump Action shotguns came in to the shop.  The Black Shadows. Retailing at 349.99 for the 2 3/4″ and 399.99 for the 3.5″ guns.  I’m pretty much a real jaded guy when it comes to new guns… Theses SXP’s have impressed me.  I like the simple, but modern look.  I like the feel.  It has a grippy texture, light weight, and has a good balance. I don’t know if I like them better than an my beloved 870’s… but if I was in the market for a new Goose Cannon, I’d give these new Winchesters a good hard look.  If I wasn’t such an 870 Fanboy, buying a pump action shotgun for the first time – This would probably be it.  But I’m not into Goose Cannons, so these long tubed guns don’t interest me enough to get into them… but they are close.

I am really interested in the Black Shadow Deer version as a dedicated Slugger.  But give me the same gun with an extended feed tube, please.    Speaking of a different version… can I get that gun with an 18″ smooth bore with an extended magazine?  I’ll take one.

Slipstream Styx just blew me away.

I’ve said it before… Slipstream never fails to impress me.  I’ve been running my Glock 23 on a diet of Slipstream since I first got it.  About the time of the Gun Dude’s hosting of the MAG-40 class, I stopped oiling it.  Didn’t need it anymore.  Hasn’t needed it since.

Well, Gundoc sent me a bottle of each.  The regular Slipstream Oil, and a bottle of the new Slipstream Styx.  Just for fun, on a whim, I decided to slap a little Styx in my good old Glock 23.  Holy crap!  Smooth doesn’t describe this… It’s… it’s… creamy.   I don’t know how to describe this… I’ve never felt a Glock like this before. Beretta’s, yes.  Custom 1911’s, yes.  This is next level Glock slickness right there.

The M&P 9 is perfect?

Guns.com has an interesting article about the S&W M&P.  The thesis however is something I am scratching my head about.  I have an M&P just like the one shown.  It’s a good pistol.  I like it.  But I like Glock Gen 3’s better.  The M&P certainly looks cooler.  And it’s accurate and reliable.  But out of the box, Glock is accurate too but the Glock also has a much better stock trigger.  You can shoot the Glock very well as it comes out of the box.

Here’s the thing though.  The Gen 4 Glocks… I’d rather have the M&P.  I don’t know why… specifically… but I’m just not a fan of the Gen 4 series and if I have to replace my Gen 3 RTF2 23, I’d opt for an M&P. Maybe my opinion of the Gen 4 will change, but I had a Gen 4 22 and I just didn’t dig the way it shot.  Maybe that was just me.    But right now, I’d rather have an M&P instead of a Gen 4.
