More thoughts on the Tactical Lever Action

I’ve had many questions about why I picked the Rossi M92 over other rifles such as the Legacy Puma, the Marlin options, or Henry, or Uberti… etc.  My selection of the Rossi example is by no means disparaging the others.  They are all quite good Arms and if you have one, then it’s going to serve you well.  Before I made my choice, I studied the Level Action platform very carefully, to include going through history books and talking to old cowboys (we still actually have those around here) and talking to new cowboys – The Cowboy Action Shooters. (We have a lot more of those around here) What I didn’t do was search internet gun forums past 3 minutes… because most of those were “Well, I use this so this is the best… no, I’ve not even seen any others, but this is the best because I have it.”

I selected the 92 design because of two things.

The next Tactical Lever Action Rifle

I am dead set on making another tactical lever action rifle.   I think I’ve mentioned before that I am going to use a Winchester 92 type platform and I’ve settled on the Rossi example of the breed. I’m thinking 16 inches on the barrel and a scout mount for a low set red dot.

This Caliber Conundrum has me flummoxed.  .44 Mag or .357 Mag.  I’ve been leaning to the .357 Magnum… However as of late, I am now leaning to the .44 Magnum.  Ammunition for the .44 is more expensive, but handloading for it is easy enough.  I think I’m going to do a .44 mag.  Out of a 16″ barrel .44 tends to gain all it’s going to get and past that it seems to go down hill.

Crusader Guardian bid for a P.D.

I’m working on a bid for 24 Crusader Guardian rifles for a Police Department back east. Looking at some other custom rifles from other makers… straight up, this PD is going to be getting twice the gun for the same price as the other guys. The only thing the other guys have going for them – big names. The Guardian rifle is one of my favorite builds, as it’s in between the entry level Partisan, and the fully decked out Templar. It’s that sweet spot of price verses performance. Or Bang for the Buck as they say.   If you want an awesome AR Type weapon that has fantastic accuracy and “To hell and back again” reliability, check out the details on the Guardian on Crusader Weaponry.  If I may suggest, upgrade the Vortex flash hider with a BattleComp… that puts the Guardian over the top.  In my opinion, it’s the best AR rifle on the market under 2 grand.

Looking at Browning

Looking at the Browning Catalog, I have some thoughts.

First.  The Micro Midas X-Bolt Rifle… Why is it not available in .223?  You have the .308 family of short action cartridges and the .22-250… but why not a .223 and a .204 option?  I think the .223 especially is an oversight.  For bringing up young shooters, .223 is ideal.  I know Browning’s reasons for only using the bigger rounds… I don’t need to hear them again… but they are wrong. Scouts (updated)

I’ve spoken before about Scout Rifles in general and some specifically.  The biggest thing going right now is the Ruger Gunsite Scout.  Now, just because something is big now, doesn’t mean it’s all that great, just inexplicably popular.  Remember, last year a Snookie was pretty big… I don’t know what that is, but evidently it washed up on the shore in Jersey.  It should probably be thrown back in… But I digress.

The Army’s New Carbine Competition

The US Army is going to hold a new Carbine Competition.   This weapon will be replacing the M-4 Carbine.  I suspect adoption will occur in 2013 or ’14… but the question is which gun is going to take it.  All the major players are gearing up for this.   Colt, HK, FNH, Remington, Beretta even has one, and Robinson will throw their XCR up again…. there will undoubtedly be others as well.

The most interesting one, in my opinion is the Remington ACR.  I’d love to see that one adopted in 6.8SPC.   The new Beretta looks awesome, but I think it looks a bit too delicate, and I but there is an accuracy issue with it.  The XCR doesn’t interest me much… the SCAR didn’t make a whole lot of friends who were actually using it in combat and got its self de-funded.  The Colt is just another AR type… and the future M4A1 is essentially just an M4 with a heavier barrel and ambi controls.   If SHOT Show was any indication as to where the DOD Brass was… it was all around Remington.  I think they are going to take it.  I don’t see anyone else really stepping up and taking this one home.

A nice day at the Range

When friends come out from Hill AFB and say they want to do some shooting – we go shooting.   So Mike and Tony came out yesterday, and Tony picked up a nice Savage 10 FCP topped it with a 6.5-20×44 Vortex Viper.  Mike brought out the finished Crusader Broadsword.  Both guns needed to be zeroed, so today, we went to the range, including WTA’s Khorne.

Mike, going prone... Nailing the 400 yard plate - every shot.
