Slipstream in Cold Weather

We were asked about the old Slipstream Artic oil we were working on.  We wanted to do something special because extreme cold plays hell with machines… and a firearm is indeed a machine.  In fact, when it gets really cold, lubrication becomes critical just like when it gets really hot.  A lot of oils don’t offer good enough protection… some of them popular weapons lubricants. I’ll explain why here in a moment.  So we looked at doing a cold weather formula for Slipstream.

Pretty much we don’t need it.  Why?  Because Slipstream works to almost Minus 60 degrees.  I tested it on a Mossberg 930SPX by burying it in a snow bank for 3 weeks.  Flawless.  The gun cycled, reloaded, fully functional.    The Lubricant worked.

The Grease, not so much.  Greases are oils with additives that thicken it up.  These things don’t react as well to severe cold.  The oil gets thicker, stiffer, and it doesn’t move.  It’s fine once it warms back up… Just like any other grease.  I’ve tested other greases and when it gets really cold… they just don’t work.   Oil, since it doesn’t contain the thickeners, keeps fluid, stays slick, and doesn’t lose its ability to provide lubrication.     Slipstream STYX also works well in very cold conditions.  Better yet, the Anti-Corrosion properties in STYX works even better because when cold metal warms up, you can get condensation building up – inside and outside.  Unprotected, that condensation can lead to corrosion… inside the frame, main springs, under grip panels.  You’ve seen it happen.  STYX stops that.

Regular Slipstream oil is great… if you are running that you are fine.  No worries.  If you go from Cold to Warm frequently…. say… in and out of a hot Patrol Car, you might want to upgrade your Slipstream to STYX.  Normal activities, you are going to be just fine. But what about Slipstream’s Nano Particles?  They remain completely unaffected by temperature.  Extreme hot.  Extreme cold.  Not bothered.  What can cause problems though is water droplets inside, freezing and forming a physical barrier to movement, blocking things from working.  The great thing about Slipstream is that it reduces the ability of those frozen condensation droplets of moisture from sticking to the metal and blocking it up.

It gets really cold out here in the High Desert country here in Utah.  Very cold.  It gets colder here than it does in a lot of places in Alaska.  I know there are places colder… North Dakota… Northern Alaska…  And we’ve got people there using Slipstream, and they have reported great satisfaction with Slipstream.

We recommend building a fire, putting your feet up, and staying warm when it gets below sixty out there…  but if you really need an advanced Lubricant for temperatures below minus 60 degrees… Let us know.  We’ll work something up.

The Gun Show

Crossroads of the West Gun Show… We had a great time at the Crusader Weaponry table.  We really did.  Sold a ton of Slipstream, which was great.  Interestingly, one of the biggest draws was the Sterling.

Walking around the Gun Show, I found that half of it was total bullshit.  Fake indian jewelry, Jerky, a freaking bakery, china, and assorted flea market crap that in my opinion should all be boosted out of the gun show.  The gun show promoters, the Crossroads of the West group – they themselves are ruining the ancient tradition of the gun show.  I know the show has to fill the tables, but they need to outreach to the dealers and guys actually in the Shooting, Hunting, and Outdoors Trade.  And don’t let in anyone else.  No Beef Jerky, no jewelry… No Fuzzy Slippers.  Yes, there was fuzzy slippers.  WTF?

The other thing ruining the gun show are the old standby grouches.  “Look but don’t touch” grumps that come out to every gun show and have tables full of crap.  I saw several SMLE Enfields… Classic .303 British rifles.  All in the same condition, but prices going from 79.99 to 380 bucks.  One .303 for 380 bucks was totally ruined by a 12 year old’s attempt at Sporterizing it.  Okay, I don’t know if a 12 year old did it – but it looked like it.  I looked at it, and said “Are you serious?”  The guy grumbled, “Price is negotiable.”  “Really?  I’ll give you fifty bucks.”  The man didn’t answer, but he knew that I knew that I should have wrapped that barrel around his neck.  The gun was just flat ruined and he wanted a beyond what a collector condition rifle would have been worth.  These guys… they are killing the gun show.  The fastest way to clear out a 50 foot radius in a Gun Show is to throw down a copy of an gun values Blue Book.  All those dealers would scramble to get away from it.

I watched people get totally taken… Yet I saw a couple guys get some real steal deals… Like a Winchester shotgun for 60 bucks.  Read that again.  A Gem.  It’s kinda like Gold Panning… lots of dirt with an occasional nugget in there.

We need a new gun show promoter in Utah.  Because there were people there walking around that should have had booths.  Fitzen Knives, Jager from Ops Gear.  They were browsing… they saw it.  Yet they wouldn’t be bothered putting up a booth at the current gun show.  We need a gun show that has these guys saying “We’re Not Missing It.”

Illuminated Reticle Scopes?

I was asked about options for Illuminated scopes.
There are a lot of them out there… Burris, Leupold, Vortex. And they are all just fine. The Vortex Crossfire Illuminated with a MilDot, can be had for only 200 bucks. But it’s not my favorite by any means.

The one I really like is the Trijicon Accupoint. No batteries, no switches, and very clear “Zeiss-Like” glass, which is critical. You need a illuminated reticle when it’s dark out… and when it’s dark out, you need to transmit as much light as possible. The Accupoint does that. And that’s why it’s my recommendation.

In this video I show you our latest Broadsword rifle… and give you a peak at our newest gun, the Longbow.  The Longbow is optimized for just what it sounds like… long range shooting with a .308 platform.

Yes, it’s just a .308.  But the owner of that rifle, took it out and got a .4 MOA group at 600 yards.  That’s staggeringly good accuracy.  If you want a bigger caliber just to be cool, please note that the cost of your ammunition will go up dramatically unless you are a reloader.   .308 might not be an ultramag by any means, but it is affordable to shoot.

How are we supposed to scoring these debates? Is it like a World Series and we count total wins? Or is it like NASCAR and we count total points over the season?  I mean, what are we supposed to do with all these, and how many are there going to be?  Because unless there is some point… I’m sick of them already.

Improving the Pump

Crusader is working on an upgrade package for the Remington 870 and the Mossberg 500.  We have been filtering down all the options, getting to those bits that can actually be helpful and ignoring the rest.
We’ve also looked at what internal improvements are the best. 
We will be putting out the package details soon enough… But its looking very similar to what we are doing for a certain Training School.
Along with the package will be some end-user options… such as stocks, color, and such.
I spent a great deal of time with my 870’s, looking at each one, weighing the pris and cons of each.  Going over everything with GunDoc… Talking to a few shotgun gurus… I think our Edge service will be huge.
