.50 BMG Shockwaves

I have a little video up on YouTube that always gets the most enlightened of comments.

Like this video here.  The Comment that just illustrates the frustration is like this one:

LOL I dont even think youd have to hit the thing with that, the bullet whizzing past a prairie dog would be enough to kill it. Mind you kind of an expensive way to get rid of vermin aint it

Sorry, I didn’t edit the comments… Just Cut and Paste so you can see what’s going on without having to actually go dip into those dank waters.

There are so many misconceptions about “The Fifty” that it’s almost as if it’s some mythological beast… One day, it’s going to be like talking about Dragons or something.

The .50 doesn’t put out head ripping shockwaves.  It’s only 2700 to 2800 FPS in most loadings.  Which puts it at the same speed as say a .308 or a good old .30-06.  In fact, the cartridge is really nothing more than a big .30-06.   What gives the .50 the range and power, is that the projective is just so big and heavy.  Bullets weight in from 650 to over 750 grains… which is impressive.  The .50 BMG’s slug alone is larger than some rifle cartridges.  Firing a .50 BMG rifle is a lot of fun.  It’s impressive.  The blast is huge.  The power that it puts out is staggering.  But the bullet zipping past something in a near miss isn’t going to do anything to it other than making it soil its self.

CDC warns of Zombies

The CDC is warning people about Zombies.  It’s kind of funny that he CDC is using Zombies as it’s Disaster Analog, since Gun Owners have been doing it for years and years.   We call it our “Zombie Plan”.  The ZP can be activated for any disaster/situation which requires drastic actions for survival.  Now the CDC report I linked to doesn’t mention it… but Firearms and Ammunition are also critical.  Because even if you don’t face Brain Eaters, you will face other people who will want what you have… everything you have.
Get your Shotgun ready.

Respecting Kimber

I’ve had some emails where people think that I am disrespecting Kimber.  Actually I feel that Kimber has disrespected the American Gun Culture.  Taking us for granted.

Personally I have great respect for Kimber.  They changed the 1911 Industry as a whole.  Before Kimber, it was common to buy a new Colt or other 1911… and take it straight to a gunsmith so that they could make the gun simply run.  Kimber comes out with the gun they called the “Custom”.  And it worked right out of the box.  They sold so well, that the other 1911 makers had to step up their games or they were out.  It really kicked Colt in the Sweets hard.

I’m critical of Kimber because in my opinion they have let themselves down.. accepting lower standards and just expecting customers to just take it because they are Kimber and they know better.  Well, that’s just not acceptable.  Kimber needs to get back to building guns instead of making pretty.  The need to take seriously the gun making responsibility.  Guns are for Competition, for Law Enforcement, for Self Defense… These guns can Save Lives.  They should take seriously a sacred responsibility to build guns right.

The .50 cal Ricochet to the head video

You guys have all seen the video before… I’m getting a lot of messages about it on facebook and youtube and such for some reason.  I guess it gone around the forums again.

Okay, it’s an Armalite AR-50. The ammo was South African Mil-Surp. The range was 100 yards. The target plate was only 1/4″ thick. It should have been like tissue paper to the 750 grain slug at 2800 FPS. Willie, the shooter, is a Former Marine with a lot of experience. The plate was angled back and to the side. A ric should have gone up and to the right. It didn’t.
This was a freak accident that could have ended badly. The ric could have opened his head up, or it could have hit one of the guys behind him. It would have been like being hit point blank with a .45ACP, that’s how much energy that slug still had.
The slug struck the arm of his glasses and the ear-pro. It destroyed the electronic ear-pro, bent the arm, and it cracked the top of his jawbone.
The man that said “We’re not doing that anymore” is his father. He almost saw his Son get killed. It was also Willie’s daughter’s birthday. She almost lost her Dad that day. Everyone there was very lucky that Willie only caught a graze.
I first posted that video on MadOgre.com. In a manner of hours it crashed my server – repeatedly – because it went viral instantly. A MadOgre.com reader put it on YouTube. And it went viral all over again.
It’s been on TV a few times on different shows… and Willie has made some money on it. Willie remains a good friend to this day.
