Calling Shennanigans on Remington

Take a good hard and close look at the 2011 Remington Catalog. On page 66 there is a blurb for the 450 Bushmaster Premier Accutip load. This blurb makes the claim that the Accutip provides “supreme accuracy” while delivering “A big dose of aerodynamics“. They go on to claim that Accutip “delivers delivers exceptional flight characteristics for ultimate downrange precision and sustained energy.”
Oh really? Hmmm… That’s interesting. Let’s take a look at the ballistic tables on page 107.Remington has 2 loads for the 450 Bushmaster. Load one is the standard “Core-Lokt” Soft Point at 250 grains. Then the Accutip at 260 grains. But the cheaper soft point has a higher BC, .208 vs the claimed superior Accutip at .144. Normally the heavier round tends to have the better BC. Evidently this isn’t the case here. Okay, fine… what about speed and energy?
At the muzzle, the lighter load is a bit faster. But it also has a higher BC. This carries the Core-Lokt bullet better all the way to 500 yards, where it remains a good deal faster. On the Energy side it’s interesting… At the muzzle the heavier AccuTip bullet hits harder, all the way out to 200 yards where they become even. Past that point, the cheaper Core-Lokt bullet shows it’s self to be the better load… and at 500 yards, that difference is substantial.

At 500 yards, the cheaper load has about 50 inches less drop than the supposedly superior Accutip.   Accuracy aside, 50 inches less drop makes getting your hits a lot easier with the Core-Lokt loads.  I don’t know about printing pretty little shot groups, but putting a round into a threat or into a kill zone on big game… I’m betting that Core-Lokt is easier to get that hit with.

So what is the Accutip supposed to do for us again?

  1. Make us spend money on something we don’t need. It’s just like spraypainting something black and calling it tactical.

“You ABSOLUTELY have to get this carbonfiber reinforced unobtanium bullet.
Designed by gnomes, and tempered in TigerBlood!

You just won’t be (insert adjective here)!”

  2. People are brainwashed into believing that the newest product or version is the best… the “must have”.
Companies have nurtured this and will continue to exploit it till the end of time.

  3. I don’t think the problem is with the product, but with the website. Remington has the worst website of any major gun company on the web. The information presented there is not reliable.

    1. Well, they are making claims that are just untrue. It’s on their website and in their catalog and I heard them pimp it as such at SHOT… the product might be more accurate, but the claims to ballistic advantages are just false from what I’m seeing.

  4. They’re not the only ones with screwy numbers. While checking out Winchester’s T-Series ammunition a while back, I discovered something interesting about the 147 grain 9mm.

When going from 25 yards to 50 yards, the velocity went from 967 fps to 973 fps (it went back down to 954 fps at 100yards). It picked up speed!

The energy, when going from 25 yards to 50 yards to 100 yards went like this … 305 ft-lbs, 310 ft-lbs and 397 ft-lbs. At that rate, it should be able to take dangerous game at 1500 yards or so.
