KTM 990’s

I keep going back and forth between the KTM 990 Supermoto and the 990 Adventure R models.  It’s not like I have any hard on for KTM, as I had one and blew the engine the first month I had it.  Since I’ve sold the ZX-11, I am without a Long Range bike and this makes me feel like I’ve had my wings clipped.  Reason I sold it is due to my knees, but the position on these 990’s is one that I can still do… I sat on a 990 Adventure R, and it’s doable for me.  Some of the other ADV bikes, not so much.  I’m not sure about the position on the Supermoto though, I’ll have to find one first.  The peg position is the same, but the seat height plays a factor here too.

I’m also thinking about turning my 525 MXC into a Supermoto.  Primarily for better On Road riding as this KTM is now my Daily Rider.  I don’t need Knobbies for the Highway.

  1. You may not need knobbies for the highway, but you do need them when the wanderlust overwhelms you and you suddenly take the trail last traveled.

    Tough decisions, tough decisions.

  2. I used to work for KTM North America and I am a fan of the 950/990 twins, but at 5’9″ the adventures are a little to tall for me to be comfortable on. (We would joke that you could always tell how many stops an adventure rider was going to make by how many cinder blocks were on the back… I frequently used the curb to help get a foot down at lights)

I have always been a fan of the older LC4 based bikes like the 640 Adventure and the 660SMC.

  3. You may want to go very doable with the peg position (ergonomics). As you are planning this to be a long range bike and if your knee conditions get worse, than you have some buffer room.

  4. I am still waiting to hear back from my local KTM dealer on whether or not the 390 duke is going to come to the U.S. Liter class bikes and commuting equals blue lights behind me…

      1. I live in AK and have never seen a Duke on the road or in a dealership. I have a friend who had a 690 SM road it once and knew my license wouldn’t survive. Yes it was a beast.
