My Personal Guide

I had to.  After shooting Evil Jim’s that bloody thing just wouldn’t get out of my head.

I had to join the Guide Gun Club. So I looked at what we had at the gun shop and I picked out this little thumper. It’s nothing fancy at all, just a Marlin 1895GBL in .45-70. It’s going to do just fine for my needs. The Guide Gun has always been a gun I’ve wanted since I’ve had just about all the others. Finally got my own.

I might have to order some Wild West Guns sights for it… but other than that, I’m keeping it nice and simple and stock.  No rail, no red dot, no “Tactical”.  Just Old School Thumping Power.  Gotta love it.

    1. Mine is a new one… The best of the worst you could say. I went through what we had. It’s going to take some work… But I’ll get it to run right.

  1. I used to own a very early 1895 that had the 18″ ported barrel and was in .450 Marlin. IMO the early .450’s are the guns to get. The guy I sold it to is a very good friend and gave me buy back rights. I never would’ve sold it but I had a quite large VA debt that was cutting into our living expenses.

  2. Well the good news is there are a lot of parts/after market parts for Marlins and a big data base on how to fix and tune them. A .45 -70 buddy of mine has said that with the modern ammo they have for them now a tune up short barreled lever action can really reach out an touch something if you can read your ranges right. He said he cheats these days and uses a laser range finder for the long shots by getting ranges for different points where he think deer might show up. His reaction to my comment about overkill for the small deer we have around here was he’s never had to track one through the brush. They tend to drop where they are hit. I’d like to see a study on how those Hornady rounds do on auto bodys and barricades.
