The Ogre likes to get away from everything sometimes… Even shooting. So when that itch strikes, I take my boys and we go find some water. So I’m going to show you some of my favorite lures. If you have no interest at all in fishing… Don’t read further.
The fish up at Flaming Gorge love to hit on Crawfish in the evenings.
The Storm Kicking Minnow did well for me year before last… I think it’s going to work well again this year.
I’ll use these under the bridge at the Gorge and jig them off the rocks. Works fantastic. Especially when you hit them with some scent.
This is one of our new Reaction Strike lures. Supposed to have good motion in the water. I like the metallic shine on it. This should be a slayer.
This Xcaliber is similar to a Matzuo that I used to love… but one that they don’t make anymore. This unit has a lot of bearings in there to give a better rattle sound in the water. If it’s half as good as the Matzuo – it’s worth every penny and worthy of the name.
Sometimes you just got to go back to the basics… a simple spoon works when others don’t. I like the Fjord Spoon in gold on a sunny day. I’ll also use the Jake’s lures. I like the mid sized Jakes, but I’ll only use two colors. Gold or silver. Gold on a sunny day, Silver on an overcast day or fishing in darker waters.
Rapalas got a lot of good lures, but I like the X-raps the best. They can be used a a crank bait or trolled. I like to run these deep up at the Gorge.
These Shads are awesome in every water I’ve tried them in. I’ll hit them with a little scent on the bill and it just works great.
Berkley’s PowerBait Power Eggs work great and are easier to use than real eggs. Bigger, brighter than real eggs, infused with some scent… One or two of these on a hook is sometimes all you need. I’ll also throw these on the hooks of a Jake or Fjord Spoon to amp it up.
Pro-Tip: Use a small chem-lite and tie it onto your line about 6-8 inches from your lure. You know those bend to crack, then shake chemical lights. The small ones work really well… like Harry Potter was fishing with you. Just add some weight to balance the light.
I’ve always used Lil Jakes up here in WY and done well with them. There’s always room for doing more well though. Thanks for sharing these.
I’ve always been fond of the 7/8 oz Blue Fox Pixee fitted with about a 5/0 treble hook. One, two, three… Yank. Not advised on the more popular rivers here in Alaska, too many troopers.
My cousin has a fly tying rig that fits into his back pack. So when i get lucky enough to fish with him its crazy how fast he can put a fly together and we never get tired of catching fish.
Yeah, I already have a religion, so I don’t do any Fly Fishing.
Think of it as a higher calling.
Pretty hard to go wrong with anything Rapala – I should get a sponsorship with them – it’d save me money.
Gotcha plugs are the only artificial lure that works really well for me, at least in the saltwater I’ve been fishing the last few years. The movement is awesome on these if you can get the trick to it down, and bluefish hit them like a ton of bricks. I’ve always wondered if these would work just as well in fresh water.
When I was inland, I remember rooster tails were the go to lure for just about any situation. I’ve heard alot of good things about grubs too, and jigs, but haven’t had much luck with them myself. I know they work, but I haven’t been able to make them do so in salt.
Give me a good “cherry bomb” or 1/4 stick any day. I have better things to do on the water than wait for fish.
I always preferred turtle fishing anyway. A piece of hotdog on a large hook will easily nab a snapper. When they dig in and fight is when the fun begins.
