9-28-09:  Shotgun Blow Back: I've had a lot of responses via emails and on WeTheArmed.com about the subject of the fighting scattergun. The last post I wrote, about Cruiser Ready elicited a response from one of The Horde who advocates the Cruiser Ready status with what is called the Down One load. When you keep the gun Down One, that means you load the feed tube to a Minus One capacity. This allows the Gauge Operator the option of a First Shot Slug if he needs it by simply pushing in a slug into the tube, and then pumping the action. There are a lot of guys that advocate that, there is a lot of logic behind that, and I can't argue against that. In fact, when I was running and Mossberg 590 as a Cruiser Gun, that's exactly how I kept it. Cruiser Ready, Down One. However I don't keep my shotgun like that anymore. Most shotgunning is going to require Shot rather than Slug. As such, I would rather have my weapon loaded to capacity. In any situation where you would actually need a slug, you will have a moment in which to get it ready. Here's the deal... most gunfights outside of Military Operations happen within short ranges. During these short range engagements, a slug or a shotshell full of 00 Buck or even BB Shot, is going to make little difference. And even if I do need a Slug, what's wrong with peppering the target before punching it through? Anything worth shooting is worth shooting twice. (or more) This is going to be one of the little subjects we talk about during my Tactical Shotgun Course.

I was going to go out and do a little long range rifle shooting today. Can't. Why? Ogre Ranch is in the middle of a freaking hurricane. Wind gusts up to 65 MPH over here. I kid you not. I've got downed branches the size of small trees, This is insane. It kept me up all night last night, and it's still blowing out there. And it's not just windy... but it's a cold wind. Winter is coming.

9-27-09:  What is the best way to keep a shotgun at ready? The best way is what people have been doing since the pump action shotgun was invented... it's called “Cruiser Ready”. The bolt is closed on an empty chamber, the weapon is on safe, and the magazine is loaded to capacity. In this manner, not only is the weapon perfectly safe, but it is ready for action in an instant. Plus, it gives you the advantage of being able to do a very quick “Select Slug” drill... you can do that a couple of ways. Method 1 is to jack the slide, load a slug into the feed tube, then jack the slide again. Done, the slug is in the chamber ready to fire. Method 2 requires more familiarity with the weapon. That is to hit the slide release, open the slide partially, not enough to release a round from the feed tube. This leads to Method 3, which is to jack back the slide, let a round hit the lift to feed that shell, but then rotate the gun to drop that round out of the action and replace it with a slug. Method 1 is generally the best unless you need to be quiet, then Method 2 is the way to go.

9-26-09:  SLIPSTREAM: You guys remember me talking about Zombie Oil... well, for those that don't know we've renamed it Slipstream. If you want it... and trust me... you do... go to CrusaderWeaponry.com and hit Contact and submit your request. Joe has Paypal all set up. You want the kit. That contains both oil and grease. Now, when you use Slipstream... use just a little. I found the best results are after cleaning your weapon with some MPRO-7 Cleaner, get the gun nice and clean... then apply Slipstream to the rails, trigger mechanism, striker mechanism, and all metal to metal contact areas. A little goes a long way. The oil or grease is actually just a carrier agent for the nano lubricant. This is why you need to work the stuff in.... get those little tiny particles all nice and dispersed across the metal. Check out this thread on WTA with feed back from those that have tried Slipstream in their own guns.

Handgunning: The biggest mistake novice pistoleros make is a simple matter of forgetting the basic fundamental skills. For some reason, they can tell you what it takes to shoot, but when they draw the weapon, it all goes out the window. For me, the biggest reason I enjoy handgun shooting is that it is more of a challenge. What makes it challenging is that handgunning is a whole person event. You can't half-ass a pistol shot. It takes a combination of body and mind and an almost zen-like “one-ness” with your handgun to make those pistol shots consistent. And it all starts from the ground up.

The Stance, is something continually harped on by martial artists... placement of your feet, your balance on your feet... there is a reason serious martial artists harp on this so much. Everything is build off that foundation. For handgunning, it is the same. We are not tensing up to throw round-house kicks, but we are getting ready to take some recoil and to possibly make movement. But since we are not about to Chuck Norris anything, our feet should be shoulder width apart, nice and comfortable, knees unlocked and just slightly bent, and our weight just a bit forward... on the balls of the feet not the heels.

Going along with the stance is a huge debate in the Gunner's Community about Weaver vs Isosceles... the correct answer is the same answer as “Mary Anne or Ginger?” The answer is “Both”. We should learn to use both and to transition seamlessly between the two. Which one we use and when all depends on the situation. If I am in an Interview Position, where I am talking to someone who I am not clear on the identity or Intent of the person – I stand with my weapon side away from that person. This puts me into the Weaver position. Should I be facing a potential threat and I'm wearing armor – I want as much of that armor facing the threat as possible so I'll be set up for an Isosceles position. And you can't say “I only use Weaver and nothing else” Well, that's just stupid because in real life, target engagements do not happen in static positions like they do on the range. Say, I'm facing a target and it starts moving from my left to my right – and I track that target with my weapon, I am swinging through Weaver into Isosceles. Say that target goes from straight in front of my Weaver position and breaks to my left – then I bring my right foot forward and I am no into the Isosceles again. So train with both, because in reality, you will need both.

Get a grip: It's almost scary when I hand a person at the gun counter a pistol and I watch them take up their grip on the gun... it's really easy to spot the Ignorant and the Novice and the Braggarts and who is an experienced shooter. Women make the biggest mistakes in the grip department. The Ladies will often grab the grip very low, putting all fingers on the grip under the trigger guard, leaving almost an inch or more between their hand and the beavertail or base area of the pistol. This is the “I've never shot a gun before in my life” grip. I especially find it amusing when the guy gripping the pistol like that has made claims to being Super Secret Squirrels in the military. Uh huh. The other common problem grip is the Revolver Grip. This is where the Support Hand's Thumb goes across the top of the firing hand, behind the pistol. This might be okay with a Revolver, and maybe that's how you've done it all your life. But now days when you do that, you run the risk of the slide hitting your thumb and causing you some sudden discomfort and or lacerations. The grip should start out with the firing hand with the pistol inline with the bone of the forearm. This grip should be up as high on the gun as possible, to put the bore axis as low as possible. The support hand then wraps around the firing hand fingers, anchoring the pistol in a vice, with both thumbs together and if possible, pointing forward. The trigger finger is up along the frame of he pistol when the pistol is not aimed at the target. A good grip is critical because because a handgun does two things during firing. One is the recoil is going to make the gun kick back and up. Torque is going to want to make the gun twist. You can Recoil from the mass of the bullet and the pressure of the charge sending that bullet out of the gun and down range. You get torque because the barrel has rifling in it to impart spin on the bullet. A good grip controls Torque and Recoil and minimizes their disturbance.

The Sight Picture. Often I ask the students what they are looking at and what their sight picture looks like. I get some strange answers. First off, the Sight Alignment, how you should align the sights. Take a look at this simple Paintbrush rendering of a sight picture.

When we are shooting target sights, we use the sights with the top of the center post even with the rear sights and we center that across the equator of our target, ( a center hold) or we put the target on top of the center post, (a 6 O'clock hold) which is the least ideal sight picture one can have in my opinion. Now, for Defensive or Tactical shooting, we use just the Dots. Line up the dots, and put that dot on the center of the target as shown in the little .gif image. The Sights and the Target together make the Sight Picture. Now how do we look at the Sight Picture? Our eyes are trying to focus on 3 things at once... something that they are not able to do. So where are we looking at? Our eyes should take a sharp focus on just one thing... the Front Sight Post. In an engagement, we are looking at the target, first and always... When a threat is identified, we bring the weapon up into the eye level and we are now looking at a sight picture. From here, shift your eye's focus to the Front Sight Post and apply pressure to the trigger. Simple as that. Don't over-think this. You don't have time. Place the Dot, and Place the Shot. Nothing else is important to look at.

The Trigger: Triggers get a lot of abuse... They get jerked and slapped and crushed just beaten on all the time. You can do everything right, and ruin the shot with even a slight case of trigger abuse. When you pull the trigger, do so with a steady pressure until the trigger breaks and the weapon is fired. To do this right, in a way that is consistent, it requires practice in large quantities. That means Dry-Fire Practice. So get some snap-caps and get to work. If you are using a pistol with a round barrel, balance a coin on it. You should be able to dry-fire the weapon without the coin falling. I like to use a laser to practice this as well. If you have a laser mounted to the weapon in the guide rod or the grip or wherever – great. You can activate the laser and dry-fire with it. The laser will clearly show you what you are doing wrong. If you do not have a laser, you can buy a cheap laser pointer for a couple of bucks. Many of these are the diameter of a pen. You can put the laser pointer in the barrel. It doesn't have to line up with the sights. You are not aiming with it. But it will still show you what is happening. The laser should not move when you dry-fire the gun. Now, it's important to practice dry-firing just as you would with live ammo. Important to note – Do not Dry-Fire any Rim-Fire type firearm without the use of a Snap-Cap. Most of the time with the laser, you will see the dot jump to the right. This is sometimes caused by a bad placement of the finger on the trigger. Use the Pad of the trigger finger, not the knuckle. The pull should be straight in line with the trigger's arc of motion. Some triggers have Over Travel. This means the trigger breaks and fires before the trigger has moved all the way back... this allows the trigger to jump that last distance and smack the back-wall of the pull and this could throw the shot off. Over Travel can sometimes be remedied by the user, or sometimes it needs a Gun Smith to sort it. The trigger can be gritty, or heavy, or it could stack. Stacking is where the trigger pull gets heavier just before it breaks. There is a lot that can be wrong with the trigger pull's qualities... but almost all of them can be overcome with lots of dry-firing practice. Okay, now that you have the trigger pulled back, and the weapon is fired – keep the finger on the trigger. Almost all Novice shooters instantly at the firing – take their finger off the trigger completely. Then they start all over again. This isn't good. This leads to Trigger Abuse. Don't beat your trigger. When you break the shot, keep your finger on the trigger. If you have a rifle, pistol, revolver, shotgun... take a moment there at the back wall. This is a part of Follow Through. Don't let up off the trigger until the Front Sight is back on the target. Let the trigger forward slowly. You will feel the trigger reach a point before it's all the way forward where it clicks. That's the reset. As soon as it resets, start pulling it back again for your second shot and then so on.

Training Scars: There are tons of Training Scars out there, too many to deal with. But I'm going to talk about two of them. A Training Scar is any Bad Habit you have picked up that needs to be worked out. If you have Training Scars, the best thing to do is to get with a serious Firearms Trainer to work with you. Your shooting buddy doesn't qualify. In fact, that could be one of the reasons you have Training Scars. Find a real Trainer who can watch you and see what you are doing wrong so he can help you do what is right. Anticipation can be fun and can sweeten the moment. Like when your lover comes out wearing some sort of sexy candy wrapper (what you tear off before consuming) that is some excellent anticipation. For those to young to know what I mean, think about Christmas Morning before Mom lets you open those presents. Or if your Extreme-Muslim – that moment just before HAhkmed pushes that button to detonate that vest you made for him. Those are examples of Anticipation. In shooting, Anticipation is a bad thing. Don't anticipate Recoil. This leads to an instant before firing where you actually push the gun. Even just slightly... this can throw your shot off. Anticipation's Best Friend is Flinch. Flinching is bad, because you can do all kinds of jacked up things including actually closing your eyes just before firing. Look, it's a simple as this... you can't hit the target if your not even looking at the thing. You are also legally liable for every round that you launch... so it would be in your best interest to keep your bloody eyes open, okay? Now, if you have Flinch it's going to take a lot of training to get it out of you. The best way to get rid of flinch is to take your shooting back to Square One. Get out the old .22 pistol or even an Air Gun. (Airsoft isn't accurate enough to really see what you are doing) Start shooting those low recoil guns, use the laser, and dry fire a lot to work out any sign of Flinching.

9-25-09:  Shotgun Day: I had a nice Day Off today. I did something that I've been meaning to do... Zero my Gauge with Slugs. It was a Gorgeous day with almost no wind and I was out there on the plateau after Sun Up setting about the business of Zeroing.

I've been a hard core student of scattergun since I decided that Crusader's training program needed it. I've been testing loads, testing techniques and working on finding out what works and what doesn't. When it comes to the Gauge – it all works for something and everything has a use. You just have to find the right tool for the task with the Gauge, and that's not all that hard. The Pump Action remains my personal favorite even though automatics are taking over like the did with the handgun and rifle markets. And I am not dissing the Autoshucking Gauges, but the Pumps are just the way to go here. A Shotgun doesn't need blinding cycling speed. Firing a shell of 00 Buck nails your target with 9 Pellets (or 12 if you want to use the 3 inch loads) all at the same time. Then with the action as super tough and caveman simple as it is... you can nail the target with another 9 in a split second. The fast part of Gauge Gunning comes in the opening instant... the time between identifying a threat, and putting hits into that threat. Rifles are fast... a well configured AR with a trained operator can be wicked fast putting hits on the target. An Operator with a Gauge that knows how to use it – is faster. And I dare say that a single blast will stop that threat Right Then, and Right There... a lot faster than punching small .22 diameter holes will stop the threat.

Now, for the Scattergun, there are limitations. The Gauge Operator must be smart. He must know his weapon and his loads... While some might say that a 12 Gauge is a weapon for the Novice as it's so simple even a stupid security guard can run it... I say that the Gauge is better suited in the hands of a more skilled operator as the capabilities are greatly expanded with nuanced technique and sharp thought. An operator that understands how to work within the Gauge's limitations and strengths is at a greater advantage over a threat armed with a Handgun or even most rifles.

I talked to my younger brother who is in law enforcement back east... his department uses shotguns as their primary long arm. That is excellent. Unfortunately they do not use Slugs, ever. This is like a giving them new Patrol Cars but blocking out anything above second Gear. Fortunately they also offer M-16 rifles to those who certify with them... then they have both options. Knowing that area of the Country very well, having the option for slugs would almost completely reduce the need for any M-16 in the department.

The big Bank Of America robbery in North Hollywood would have been ended all the sudden-like had those officers made use of the simple 12 gauge slug. Because Armor or not, a slug will yank the fight right out of them... having ribs and organs suddenly crushed like being hit with a Crusader Knight's battle mace will pretty much put an end to all your aggressive feelings.

Well, what about for Hostage Situations?” Okay, that's a fair question. At close ranges, buckshot is not a problem. At longer ranges, Slugs are indeed accurate enough. With just a fancy Red Dot, I made Hostage Saving Headshots with my Smooth Bore. Israel has used, for a long time, 12 gauge rifled shotguns firing slugs in the role of Sniper Overwatch for their Check Points. They used them with Great Success. I would rather face a hostage situation with a shotgun than I would with just a pistol. Now if the hostage situation is beyond 100 yards – that is what your Snipers are for with their scoped up .308 rifles.
For those that question a Slug's power... don't. A 1 ounce slug, (437.5 grains) fired at 1600 FPS which is what this load I used is said to fly at... hits with 2484 foot pounds of energy. A 230 grain JHP at (comparing Winchester loads here with date from Winchester) 880 FPS hits with 395 foot pounds of energy. So if you have an questions about that... just thing – which one would you least rather take a hit from? Okay, now with a rifled bore those numbers and the accuracy become all the more impressive. But you do lose the versatility of the smooth bore, so that is what I advocate of course.

I'm going to say this right here, right now. The 870 Shotgun has become once again, my very favorite fighting weapon. It is replacing the M4 and the 556 rifles as Ogre Ranch Front Line Defense.

9-24-09:  I'm disgusted with Obama's words and actions before the UN. His apologies to the UN for America's greatness. I'm revolted by his ideology. That no Nation is better than another. I'm ashamed of Obama's withdrawal of the Missile Defenses from Poland and the Czech Republic. This President is not My President. This President is a joke and an insult to the Office. We need to make sure that he loses power... come next November... he needs to lose his Congressional Back Up. We need to vote Democrats out of Office everywhere, House and Senate. Nevada needs to FIRE Harry Reid. Even California can admit that Nancy Pelosi is a psycho-retarded fascist. I really don't care who we put in, as long as they are not asinine, self aggrandizing bastards like who we have in control now. If we do this... we can make Obama the Lame Duck that he needs to be, until we get him out too.

Liberals are killing America. I noticed that when a Pro-Life Demonstrator was shot and killed, it didn't get any news. I also noticed that since a Census worker was lynched – not only was it reported, but it was blamed on Conservatives. Oh really? It's okay to murder millions of unborn babies, and that gets a slide... but one guy gets strung up its automatically Our collective faults and it's all over the news. Yeah, that doesn't work. First off, Republicans and or Conservatives do not advocate the killing of anyone save for Terrorists or the Enemies of our Nation on the battlefield. I noticed that these G20 riots – Not protests, but Riots – are all hippies and other assorted Liberal Freaks speaking out against The Man. The cities have to board up their windows and move their cars so they don't get rocks and bricks thrown through them. Okay... and when Conservatives throw their Tea Party protests, the area is cleaner than before the protest. Tea Parties do not have SWAT TEAMS deploying Sonic Weapons and Billy Clubs against the Protestors... Liberals do. Tea Parties do not need quarter of a million dollars worth of Street Cleaner service... Liberal Protests do. Tea Parties do not get Tear Gassed, Liberal Protests do.

Maybe this is why Tea Parties don't get on main stream media...

We're boring.

Maybe we should overturn cars and smash windows...

No, that would make us as low as they are. We're better than that. We are Conservative.

I pulled the trigger: That Savage Model 10FCP rifle that I've been wanting... well, I took the ones we had, examined each one carefully, and selected the one I found to be “The Best” and I officially put it on layaway. I'm still waiting on the scope to arrive – the Vortex 6.5-20x50 Mil Dot is on the way. I think this might be a good match up here. We shall see. Rings and Bases, I'm thinking about ordering some Badger Ordinance. I'd wager that this Savage with this Vortex will be the most accurate center-fire rifle I've ever owned. Maybe not. We'll see... I'm not in a rush to get his rifle out and broke in. Money is tight and I'm saving as much as I can because I'm running for the Utah State Sentate in the Spring... that is not going to be cheap. This rifle is cheap by comparison. Money donated is going into a separate account to be used only for Political purposes. Just so you guys know that donated money isn't turning into a new rifle. That would be completely shitty.

Okay, so since the Factory Range Day, those damnable S&W M&P pistols have been on my mind. I really liked the way that shot. Okay, on top of that, like a retard, I go and take the one I'm most interested in... for some reason I can't explain... the .45 Compact version... and hit that with some Slipstream. Oh man, it's slick! So nice... I was tempted to trade a gun on that thing! I didn't, because that would have been ridiculous, but the temptation was there. I shouldn't have even touched that gun.

I'm really not into PolyStriker pistols, I'm into MetalHammer guns. There are some PolyHammer guns that I like, and I've even seen some MetalStrikers... but this M&P is the first PolyStriker that has been itching on me.
Those are the 4 basic Pistol Types, and of course there are the MetalWheel and PolyWheel guns... and I respect the MetalWheel with reverance... but I

Orders for Slipstream is pouring in and people are getting it and trying it out for themselves. The overwhelming response has been nothing but positive. You know what I want to see? I want to see YOUR videos, on YouTube, showing the Slipstream results from your guns. We should have a contest. Upload your video clip, showing before and after or in some other way showing how slick your gun is now, thanks to Slipstream. Email me the URL of that video... and we'll judge the best ones to show off... and the winner... hmmm... we need a prize. We'll come up with a prize later.

9-23-09:  Fired and interesting gun today... the Steyr AUG as built by Sabre Defence. The trigger is no comparison to an AR trigger... but all Bullpups have a disadvantage in that department. The gun functioned flawlessly. Which is not surprising. The thing that really impresses me about the AUG, and especially this version of it... is how well it balances. The center of mass is just above the firing hand, so the gun feels lighter and quicker. Very maneuverable. The optic we used was the Trijicon ACOG, an optic more spendy than most of the rifles you would put it on. However, it is an absolute Force Multiplier. You can reach out with greater precision than you can with an Aimpoint or Eotech... they are just fantastic. I would love – LOVE to have an ACOG like this one. They are fantastic. Unfortunately the expense is prohibitive. I just can't afford one. Not now, and not any time soon. However, if anyone out there has one and you don't like it – I will happily and eagerly trade you for my Eotech!

I tried out the Surefire EP-3 EarPro while shooting. Worked great. Very comfortable. Only 12 bucks. I'll be buying more of these. I wish Basin Sports would stock these suckers.

Training Updates: The Training Course this Saturday is my Defensive Pistol class. I have a few people promised to attend, and a lot spaces open. For everyone you bring, you get a discount. You bring 3 people, your class is free. That's a great deal for a training course.

The Tactical Shotgun Course coming up in October, on the 24th, is going to be held at the Buckskin Hills Range, as usual, but the class will not start until about 3 in the afternoon. The IDPA group will be having their competition, and I'm going to be shooting that too... but even if I didn't, we would have to wait until they cleared the range. Also, several guys from SLC are going to be coming out for this one, so we want to give them some travel time. This will put them later driving home, but the consensus is that it's easier to drive later than getting up at 4AM to drive out here.

That October class will be the last training class held in Utah until the Spring. We are working on a January Course in Arizona. That class will be a Combination 2 Day course. Day 1, Tactical Carbine. Day 2 Tactical Shotgun. The price will be 200 dollars, for either class or both. So 200 bucks gets you two days worth of training, or which ever one you want. 200 rounds rifle, 50 pistol, 100 shells of Bird Shot, 20 buckshot, and 20 slugs. That's a lot of ammo – and you will use it up!  That is going to be an awesome time... don't miss it!

9-22-09:  Germania: If I was to make a list of guns that I wanted to buy, if I was spectacularly wealthy and had little in the way of expenses... I'd buy a couple HK guns. Namely, the USP Elite .45 and the USP Expert .40.... I'd also pick up that SOCOM pistol, just because. I like the looks of these guns... but what turns me off of them, is that they are HK. Yes, I'm throwing that down... HK is a turn off to me. Last time I called and talked to HK about an issue, I was treated very poorly, as if HK was offended that I would dare call them and question their weapons or suggest that they were less than God's Gift to Humanity. Then there was the P2000 I tested – it was very average.

I had a couple come in to the shop the other day... German... thick Deutschland accents. The guy was very humble, if not absolutely timid about being there looking at all the guns in the gun counter. He explained in extremely broken English that such a place was impossible to exist in Germany. He asked if we had any guns from Germany... I showed him the HK's which he was impressed with, that we had them... but then I pulled out the SIG's. “SIG Sauer? You have SIG Sauer?” He was giddy. “And you can buy them... not being... police agent... military?” I explained that I love SIG's myself and own several. “You have SIG's? All these guns, you like SIG the best?” He about hugged me. That made his day. His wife was beaming. Evidently they are made in his home town and he worked for them or something... but the pride he had in the SIGs was incredible.

What was funny was his complete dismissal of Glock. “Hmmm... Glock... yes, yes, Glock.” And just basically waved it away, not even wanting to look at it. He looked at others guns too... but just lost himself over the SIG's.

9-20-09:  Yesterday, Saturday September 19th, Basin Sports hosted another Factory Range Day.

We had a ton of manufacturers representing. SIG, S&W, Browning, Benelli, Springfield, CZ, Surefire, Savage, Remington, Zeiss, Nikon, Swarovski, Weatherby, Steyr, Marlin, Stoeger, HK, Magnum Research, Walther, Thompson Center... and I'm probably leaving some out... it was a stacked house. If you couldn't find a gun you wanted to try out – you were not looking.

I tried out the 3 top new guns from the 3 top shotgun builders. Remington's 105CTi. Browning's new Maxus, and the Benelli Vinci. The 105CTi has said to have some reliability issues. Honestly, I fired a lot of shells through one and I didn't have a single malf of any sort. It ran. And it hit. I liked that it was classy looking, with nice wood and a carbon fiber finish on the reciever. It was a sexy looking gun. Then there was the Vinci that a lot of folks had been talking about. It was a nice shooting gun. Smooth and quite pleasant to shoot. There is a lot that I liked about the Vinci. It's a great shotgun. However the one I really liked the most is the new Browning Maxus. It wasn't trick about looks or new actions or anything to hype it. It was just simply “Just Right”. I had said before that it felt “Just Right” in the feel of it... and I can now say the same thing about it in shooting. It felt “Just Right.” And that's important for a shotgun... it has to handle and point naturally. The Maxus did. The weight and balance were perfect. The recoil was soft without feeling too cushy like the Vinci did. With the Browning I could bust two shots as fast as I could pull the trigger and both shots impact zones were stacked.. the action was blazing fast. The Vinci, when fired in the same manner... the second shot impacted to the Right of the first. The Maxus even felt softer to my shoulder. And the Maxus is about 200 to 400 dollars less than Vinci. If I wanted a hunting auto – and I kinda do – After shooting all the shotguns out there... I'd buy the Maxus. I really would. And this is the first time that Browning has taken that from Benelli. When I say Browning has nailed a Home Run with the Maxus, what I had meant to say was that Browning knocked it out of the park.

Walther's new PK380 pistol... a beefier version of the Walther P22 chambered in .380 was there and I tried my hand at it. It feels much more stout than the P22 ever did. Real gun steel in the slide than the cast zinc alloy that the P22 feels like its made of. It shot pretty well too. I was able to make good hits with it... and it was light. However, I really wasn't impressed with it much at all. For a gun similar in size, you could have a compact 9mm M&P, and have a gun that is more powerful, reliable, and widely accepted as a proven design. This PK380 is unknown in that regard, and fires a weaker cartridge. I have a scar from a .380 hit... i'd have been dead if it was a 9mm. While I wouldn't want to catch another one, if I was doing the shooting – I'd much rather

Hold on – there is an Elk bugling just outside. A good sized bull. I wish I had batteries in my camera or I'd get this.

Where was I? I'd much rather be launching 9mm's instead of .380's. And since you can get 9mm's in guns the same size and weight as .380's now - .380 has no valid reason to exist save for pistols like the NAA Guardian or the Keltec P3AT. This Walther is just too big to be taken seriously for what it is.

Speaking of the M&P pistols. They really impressed me. I shot several of them several times and seriously – I am quite taken with them. In every caliber, they were solid, accurate, and reliable. We didn't have a single jam in any of the M&P pistols all day long... and they got fired all day long. Work horses, and good looking ones at that.

LESSONS FROM ARMED AMERICA: Mark Walters of Armed American Radio and Concealed Carry magazine... and Kathy Jackson of CCM... they have a book out. It's called Lessons From Armed America, and it's a book that all Gun Owners need to have in their collections. There are a few books that I say All Owners Should Get... this is now one of them. This book answers the question that we all get asked all the time. “Why do you carry a gun?” Get this book. I've talked to Mark about this book a lot and I'm ordering one for myself. You need to as well. Get This Book.

Speaking of Armed American Radio: I'll be on again tonight. It's going to be a great show tonight. Gabe Suarez is on, I'm on, and Skip Coryell of the Second Amendment March.

9-16-09:  Training Kids: As Father of six boys, a Gun Owner and an Instructor, Training Kids has been a big issue with me. The biggest problem that people have that I see is that they don't remember what it was like to be a kid themselves. They either talk down to them or talk over there heads. Get down on their level. Don't make the kid look up into the sun to talk to you. Kneel. Get on their level physically, and mentally. And understand that while they do not have the body mass and stature to handle shooting full sized guns, they don't always need a “Cricket”. They can't handle a 12 Gauge, but maybe they could handle a .410 or a 20. As long as it has a recoil pad and the gun fits them properly. My approach has always been to first teach them to respect the firearm, but not to fear it. The gun is a tool, just like a drill, saw or hammer. But if you have a kid that is frightened of the vacuum cleaner – he's probably not going to handle firing a gun too well.
Take the kid out to where they can see clearly, you can kneel down to their level, and let them feel the weight and balance of the gun. Get them to shoulder it, aim it. Once they are comfortable with that, then you can show them how to load it and unload it. Then let them do it themselves. You are empowering them to learn. Children learn best by doing, not by lecture. Safety is first, but close by, you have to instill in them a sense of confidence and accomplishment. Make this activity enjoyable... this has to be a positive experience for them. Because no matter what – that kid is going to remember that day for the rest of their lives. They might not remember the trip to Disney Land or the Movies – but they will certainly remember you taking them shooting. And they will remember the vibe that you established. Kids have very active minds and while they can do some stupid things, they have rational reasons for doing them at the time – even if they say “I don't know why later”. So because of their growing brains – respect them. Talk to them like an adult, but not over them. Make sure they understand the instruction. Set them up right, eye-pro, ear-pro, a ball cap to shade their eyes from the sun... and let them do it. Set out a box of ammo for them, and let them do it. Loading and firing. Establish their goals with them. And encourage improvement. It doesn't take much to instill the desire for them to improve themselves.

Making them feel comfortable with no unreasonable expectations... take off the Disciplinarian Cap that some Father's wear... and just let the kids do it... 30 years down the road, no matter what happens in life... that kid will look back on that day with a smile.

WTF is Obama thinking? Killing off Missile Defense for Poland and the Czech Republic opens up all of Western Europe to any threat from Russia, our friends and family over there, our international interests over there... and all of them are now under the gun because Barry is a freaking moron. Poland, in a move showing wisdom beyond all the jokes, is now refusing to talk to the USA via Hillary Clinton. They are pissed. A lot of people are pissed, and the only ones that are really happy about this are Barry and his Posse, and Pooty Poot Putin. What does that tell us about this situation?

A lot of folks are angry at this Administration. A lot of people are standing up and voicing opposition to .Gov Policy. Instead of listening to the now Un-Silent Majority, Nancy Pelosy cries in front of the Cameras asking us to curb our enthusiasm in some of our statements, because she's worried about us getting violent. You know what, Nancy? How about you just stop being stupid and stop pissing us off? If you would stop with the asinine policies, we wouldn't be angry about them. See how that works?

America is going full tilt boogie in the wrong direction because we have the most retarded Administration since Carter, and these guys are making Carter actually look good by comparison. These guys are ruining America and are hell bent to take down the rest of the world too.

9-15-09:  It's okay to call Bush a Liar, but now thanks to a Congressional ruling – it's not okay anymore to call the President a Liar even if he is... Okay, that's fine... they can make new rules. But let's see if these rules still apply when we get a Republican back in the Oval Office. Let's see how long that lasts. Let's see if they can play the game by their own rules. So far, they haven't. Rules – and laws – simply do not apply to them.

What? You disagree? Look at these videos coming out of the ACORN offices... ACORN the Community Organization that Obama helped and that helped Obama and that got MILLIONS of our tax dollars.

I want an explanation as to why this story about ACORN is not all over the major news networks, and why are not these ACORN Employees IN JAIL. They are aiding and complicit in FELONY crimes.... even if these are fictitious – how many real crimes have they aided in? How many real crimes in Baltimore, Washington, New York, and San Bernadino. And this lady saying she killed her husband? Please tell me there are several detectives looking into this. This is who we have running the USA. This is who we have in charge.

For now.
We wont be fooled again.

And if we disagree with Obama's policy – we are racist. Uh, yeah... that accusation as become very tired. It's now completely meaningless. The idea is to make people afraid of speaking out against Obama, but it's not working. Because we really don't give a damn what color Obama is. We think Al Gore is an idiot too, and he's a White Guy. Race has nothing to do with it and I'm sick of hearing that charge. We're not racists. I worked shoulder to shoulder with Blacks – Yes, I said Blacks – and we worked together well. I had a black girlfriend named Coco for a brief time – she was lovely and a fantastic kisser. My brother's life was saved by a Latino. My father went out of his way to drink water from “Black Only” water fountains in his school during the 50's. There is no way that all of us who disagree with Obama are racists. However, I know a lot of Obama Voting Liberals who are.

According to a local expert, I am advised that I should start building my War Chest. I am required by law to log every donation I get. Name and Address, Amount and Date. Doesn't matter where it comes from or from who – as long as it's logged. Just like I have to log the spending. So I can take donations now, for my Senate run... Ogre at MadOgre.com via PayPal works perfectly, but include your real name, address, phone number. Every little bit helps. When I start the campaigning – I'm going to nail it hard with radio adverts. Those are not cheap. Those ads are going to be followed up by large print ads. Again, not cheap. Very few wire framed yards signs. Those are mostly annoying... it's the adverts that make you think that make the difference. And they are expensive. What's this all about? Again – I am going to run for the Utah State Senate, and I need to start building my War Chest.

9-14-09:  I took my oldest boy out shooting a today, a compact version of my Tactical Handgun course. He did remarkably well. He burned through 3 boxes of my ammo. It was a Browning Buckmark pistol, so the ammo was cheap, being a .22. The boy is a natural. Snap shots of Controlled Pairs impacted with an inch at 15 yards.

One of my younger boys concentrated his efforts with a scoped Marlin .22 rifle, and with it, cut out the orange center dots of some targets at 50 yards. Again, a natural shot.. this is the same Son that uses a Red Ryder BB Gun to knock birds out of the trees to feed cats. He's a real sniper with that Red Ryder. I think for Christmas he will get a serious pellet gun. All my boys are proving to be exception marksmen with any weapon they are handed. It is my fear though, that in the future they will need to use these skills. Which is why I am dedicating myself to training... training myself to be a better trainer... so I can teach them what I fear my save their lives. These are two of my boys who want to be in Law Enforcement and Military as careers. With Six Sons, it's a good thing .22 Rimfire stuff is cheap. My oldest is ready to bump up to Centerfire Pistol, but I can't yet afford it.

A Side Note here: The pistol that we shot was a Browning Buckmark as I said. One that my buddy Ben traded in to the store because it was just a nonfunctional bastard. Well, I took it home, cleaned it up and worked some of the parts, and it functioned fairly well for awhile and then just because problematic. It's not a very trustworthy pistol... perfect for stoppage drills! Well, before we went out, I opened it up and cleaned it a bit... and then lubed it generously with Zombie Lube. Believe it or not, this headache of a handgun actually ran. We shot Federal Champions and CCI Mini Mags with no problems regarding function. I am not just impressed. I was shocked. If you knew this pistol – you wouldn't believe it. This Zombie Lube is impressive stuff.

We remember Patrick Swayze who has passed away. We only have one word. “WOLVERINES!” Which may not be the most appropriate, because that was C Thomas Howell who screamed that line. Red Dawn, great movie. Those that would remake it should get a punt to the junk.

I don't know why, but I read an article on Fox News, not the type I normally read. About a woman named Kate Dillon who is a famous model... in Plus Size. If you look at her photos – she is without a doubt a gorgeous woman. See, I like a healthy figure. I like curves. I like a woman who looks like she wont get broken. Because, elf princesses, I'm sorry... just aint sexy. What I find sexy, are women who are smart, confident, and strong. I don't find weakness, illness, and helplessness to be sexy. Maybe these have been promoted as sexy because Men have become so weak and helpless themselves that they look for women that they feel they can dominate in their emasculated state. The sexiest women to me are the ones that are real women. Mrs Ogre is a Real Woman and I don't just love her... I feel lust for her too. Passion. I know I wont break her and I know she can back me up if things go wrong. She kicked a guy in the head once – knocked his ass out. Dancers have great legs like that. She can shoot too. She prefers the .45 in a 1911 platform. She's a hell of a lot smarter than I am when it comes to Numbers. (I have to use a prosthetic brain for number calculations) And she has a figure that can make a Priest want to kick in a stained glass window. My GOD I love this woman! She has given me six awesome boys. She is my Valkyrie... she is my Goddess. I want her to know that.

The subject came up about me Running for a Public Office. Yes, I fully intend to run. Come March, and the actual filling, I'll be campaigning actively. Should I win, what will that mean for MadOgre.com, Crusader, my Training... Well... I will probably keep blogging. I don't see why I'd stop. I might create a new site for blogging State Business... but I'll keep MadOgre.com up. WeTheArmed, I'll remain active. Crusader, well... that I might have to give up because it would be a bad thing if all the sudden Crusader got an order for 300 Templar Rifles for the Utah Highway Patrol and I am a part of Crusader... that might not look the best... LOL! Training... well... I don't know. Maybe I could keep doing a course once in awhile. I don't know. Working at the Gun Counter? I don't know. I just don't know what that future would hold... but I would still be posting my opinions and Arm Chair Quarterbacking the Gun Industry. Why am I doing this? Putting my money where my mouth is. By running, I am leading by example... hopefully that if I run I might get other Good Men to run too. Any Local Level public office. We need to FIX the Republican Party from the Inside. We can't build a new 3rd Party... not in a hundred years. But we can Fix the Republicans pretty easy with a relative small influx of actual Conservatives, we can tilt the balance back to the Right. That's why I am running.

9-13-09:  For those that may have not tuned in, you guys have got to listen to the stream of Armed American Radio. Get it off iTunes, and listen to this one carefully. Specifically the second hour where Massad Ayoob talked about the Open Carry in Phoenix AZ during a political rally. Mas made the point I was trying to make last week... he nailed it.

Browning's new shotgun, the Maxus. The Browning rep came in the other day and brought with him a new gun, the Maxus. That shotgun is amazing. I know a lot of my readers are, as I am, huge Benelli fans... but to give Browning the credit they deserve, they nailed it. This is a great shotgun. During our Factory Range Day on the 19th, I'll test fire this machine... but just handling it – it feels “Just Right”. I love it.

9-11-09:  9-11 Remembrance. I remember vividly 9-11-01. I have not forgotten. Neither have I forgiven, as I do not blame Ourselves for bringing those planes upon our own heads. We did not fly planes into or own buildings and we did not kill our own kin. We know who who did.. our our boys are over there Hunting those bastards and they are not going to come home until they find them and kill them. Poor some out today, and bow your heads.

I've been doing a lot of thinking about this, and I've decided not to run for Utah State Representative. From what it looks like, and what I've found, a State Representative really can't get much done. Which is unfortunate. I'm sorry if I disappointed anyone out there. I know this could be taken hard. I've decided instead to run for Utah State Senate. In the Senate I would be able to fix what's broken. I'm not campaigning yet. I wont start until this Spring. When that starts, I'm going to need a lot of help. I'm going to give this everything I have. I'm even going to buy a new suit. I am dead serious about this... I'm serious enough about this that I am even willing – and I am not kidding – to wear a neck tie. However – I am not now, nor will I ever be a “Politician”. I will be a representative for the People of Utah and the people of my District. I will base my decisions on 3 simple questions. 1 – Will this Help or Hinder individual Liberty? 2 – Will this Help or Hinder the Citizens living in my District? 3 – Will this Help or Hinder the people of the State of Utah? We need to Maximize Freedom and Minimize Government... even in the State of Utah. Oh, and one more thing... You'll actually be able to talk to me. Email, Faxes, all communications will be read and responded to. Phone Calls? Yeah, I'll actually answer the phone or at least give you a call back if I can't answer at that moment. But you will be able to actually communicate with me. Which is more than I can say for... well... we will not point fingers.

Armalite AR-50A1: The .50 cal rifle we've been shooting has finally been dialed in at 200 yards. Time to push that out to 1000. I noticed the action was a little stiff... so I nailed it with some Zombie Oil. It was like a completely different gun. Felt like a great big Remington 700. Can you say “Smooth”? I knew you could. Now check this out, Chance, one of my Carbine Students came into day with his Beretta Storm .40, and complained that it was stiff and nasty. And it was. So I nailed it with some Zombie Oil. This was the biggest transformation I've ever felt. This was like a completely different pistol. One of the smoothest handguns out there, is the Beretta 92FS... it's just naturally smooth. This Storm, was even smoother. It was amazing. Chance declared his desire to buy a bottle of Zombie Oil. He was SOLD. So am I!

Tactical Shotgun Training: Before I mention that, let me just remind folks that this month, on the 26th I am offering the Defensive Handgun Course. This is a basic course centered on the defensive use of your handgun. 200 rounds of your pistol ammo is required, and 250 is recommended in case you want to repeat a drill or two. So, basically 4 or 5 boxes of your favorite FMJ stuff. You'll need a holster that you can draw from easily, and reholster easily – without looking at the holster. I suggest practicing your draw and reholstering before the class as a jump start. The idea of the class is to prepare you in the case of a hostile encounter, so your gear selection should reflect a more normalized attire and gear selection. Your 511 Tactical Vest might be trick, but unless you really wear that every day, don't bring it. If you normally wear a Galco Combat Master holster – sweet. A Blackhawk Serpa, awesome. Those will work. Uncle Mike's? That will do. What wont do, is an overload of attitude or arrogance. Check that at the door and come in with a willingness to learn, no show off how cool you think you are. Your skills with your weapon will do that for you, and more importantly, how much you improve will do that. Because that is what I'm looking for. We are going to find where you break, then fix that.

Okay, back to the Scatterguns. My first Tactical Shotgun Course will be held on 10-24-09, out here at the Buckskin Hills Shooting Complex, from 9:00AM till – anywhere from 2 to 4 PM. I'm still putting this together and haven't run sections yet, so I'm not real sure about the finishing time. I'm also not quite sure on the Round Count, but we are so far looking at about 100 shells of bird shot, 20 shells of 00 Buck, and about 20 Slugs. You do not need a new or fancy shotgun for this. A simple pump action 870 or Mossy 500 will do just fine. A shorter barrel with an extended feed tube and a Side Saddle would be ideal... but not required. We will be shooting from close range to 100 yards, and perhaps further. For the up to date information on this course, check in here as updates will be posted there. For you Arizona Citizens, a Tactical Shotgun Course is being put together for January near the vicinity of Phoenix. Those interested in that one, contact me.

9-9-9:  We've got a number of Private Elk Hunts: Last year these hunts where going for 950 bucks. I'm got them for 750 bucks. Private land, almost guaranteed to bag an elk and fill your freezer, and you are not out with the General Season hunters... there is also a nice Pick Up service for a small fee where they will go get your downed Elk, and get it processed for you so you get the meat all nicely wrapped and ready for cooking or freezing. This is awesome especially for first time hunters. This private hunt is a good one. We've already sold several of them, but we have some left. If you want to kill your own elk, this is the easiest, cleanest way to do it.

I've got a problem with the Czars. They answer only to the POTUS and there is no Constitutional foundation for them. I also have a problem with the Congress who's only concern with the Czars is that they don't have any say in who becomes one. There should be no Czars in America.

Shadetree Garage: A little Business Idea: Open a wide, multibay garage stocked with took and equipment... guys can roll in, use the tools as needed, and pay only for the time on the floor. Tools are checked out as needed and accounted for... there would be a Mechanic or two on duty to supervise and advise, but people work on their own cars. If the mechanic has to bail someone out, the mechanic has his own additional rates... but the point is that this would be a place where guys can work on their own cars with out having to buy all the specialized equipment and tools... and of course... shop manuals.

9-8-09:
I've been testing some new Weapon Lubricant that is called “Zombie Oil”. This stuff is amazing. It's a particulant lubricant suspended in a synthetic liquid lubricant. This gives us a wicked 1 to 2 punch against friction. This stuff hates friction. What's in it... stuff that no one else out there is using because it is expensive. We've got it. We got it, because it's the best. NASA uses it to Lube spaceships. We're using it to lube our weapons because it's the best. We will have an Oil and a Grease. The grease will be called Zombie Butter, the oil, Zombie Oil because we thought better of calling it Zombie Jizz. Our buddy Ben had a certain little 1911 that if he performs a Press Check and just lets go of the slide, the slide will just stick. Every lube he has used had no effect on this. We put Zombie Oil to the test, rails, link, bushing, barrel... at first, the Zombie Oil seems to have no special effect... it's slick... but nothing really spectacular.... after hand cycling, the suspended lubricant particulants work in... and then it happens... it gets slicker. Press Check time. Ben pulled the slide back a bit and let go... Snick! The slide went back into battery without a hitch. Ben actually giggled. I tried it on an AR with a nasty action... after working in Zombie Oil, the vorpal weapon went Snickety Snack and it felt like a rifle that cost a heck of a lot more. I put it on a Super Nova, opening it up and applying it directly to the rails that the bolt rides on... the action felt incredible... like there was no metal to metal contact in there at all. I mean it was SMOOTH. You could feel the bolt engage and the lift mechanism, but the bolt just glided between the open and closed position like it wasn't even there. Then I put it on a Stoeger P350, a cheaper shotgun that sells for 299. The transformation wasn't just amazing... that shotgun went out there door 10 minutes later. Sold. I kid you not. Tomorrow, I'm treating my auto rifles and shotguns with it... hell... all my guns with it. This stuff will be sold online through Crusader Weaponry when it's ready for market.

The FBMG Snafu. Wow, I've been getting a ton of emails about this. Guys, I'm really sorry that FBMG has gone under. No, they are not coming back, ever. I've not now, nor have I ever had anything to do with FBMG. I do not know how to go about contacting James. All I heard is that he is deployed over in the war zone, and that's all I know. That's it. I wish there is something that I can do, but there is nothing, and it's not my place. Our friend Larry Correia sold his stake in FBMG to James and got out in 2008, he was out of the "Management" end of things in Oct but still sold some guns through December and then left and washed his hands of FBMG.  So Larry no longer had anything to do with them... Larry worked months and months there, as a stake holder and partner - without pay.  James wanted full control over everything and Larry gave it to him.  That was FBMG's deathnell. James was left to run the business as he saw fit.   Seriously, Larry got screwed just as badly as you did - if not worse.  I just talked to Larry, and he doesn't know where or how to get a hold of James either.  He's at a loss.  There is nothing he can do.  Selling out also sold that responsibility.  In the long run - this was probably the best thing Larry could have done.

I am very sorry about this. I know I directed a lot of traffic over to FBMG – because the were my friends building their life dreams and they had some cool stuff to sell. But I wasn't paid by FBMG, and when I purchased anything from them, I paid retail. Last word we got from James:

...will be in and out of the country for the next 18 months. My family is dealing with the issues in my absence and I am dealing with them while I am home. The customers are all getting product or refunds, and the hold up is the lawsuit with Jess. Everyone that got into the back knew how bad the problem was and it only got worse. I made some real errors in my decision making at the end and believed a lot of things I should not have in several areas. Now I have to deal with that and make the customers whole. That will get done as soon as Mitch gets done sticking it to Jess. FBMG will not be reopening. I am moving on to other things but I will continue to be a dealer and MFG on a limited basis.”

I don't have ANYTHING to do with FBMG and I never did and I don't know how to contact them.  Neither does Larry.  So from now on I will no longer be responding to any questions regarding James', or FBMG's business... because it's none of mine. That is the last word I will say about it.

9-7-09:  Excellent Email that I've got to post:Regarding shotguns for CQB: I've been preaching that concept around here for a while, now.  Only problem is that so many folks are enamored of the AR and such.  "A shotgun is only good for a hundred yards, but my AR is good for 800!"  Ignoring the fact that few of the boasters are good enough shots for that to matter, I can even understand that theory, out where you are.  Here in NH, we have lots of woods, hills, and mountains... other than intentional clearings like rifle ranges, shots over 50-100 yards would be a rare thing, and a good shotgun can make shots up to 200 yards, as you note.  A shotgun puts a lot of lead on target, either as multiple pellets (which deal well with a BG using trees for a minimal sort of cover), or as one very destructive slug. So, realistically, for this environment, the shotgun is not just a nice option, but is dramatically better than the typical "assault rifle."  While zombie hordes are unlikely, a major economic collapse could see some widespread looting.  Lots of folks from NYC and Boston vacation up here, and I can imagine a few of the brighter bulbs getting the idea that they can come up here and set themselves up as our liberal overlords. I was curious if you could recommend any good books on the subject of tactical shotgun use.  Particularly any that might go into use of some of the box-magazine shotguns (eg, Saiga).  In an extended firefight, I tend to think that quick reloads will be important enough to justify the lack of flexibility in quickly inserting different rounds as is possible with a pump gun. Thanks, Joe

As far as a book goes, I'm not sure on this one... Another Hordemember recommended this one a few days ago. StressFire II: Advanced Combat Shotgun, by Massad Ayoob. I've got a great deal of respect for Mas. I've talked to him on several occasions about training and even bumped into him a few times, and the man is an icon for a reason. I've not read this book... but I am sure it's winner. I was thinking about the training for Saigas... that's rather unique and would pretty much just fall in line with most AK training or Carbine training. You could probably use an S-12 in my Carbine course with little problem.

We got in some more of those awesome Savage tactical rifles:

I want one of these... 750 bucks. Not too much money, in fact, it's half the price of my XCR. Aaarrgh I want one of these! I don't really have anything I want to trade, and I don't have the money to buy it. This is a problem. The solution will have to be a course full of students at my Defensive Handgun Course on the 26th.

You will notice the new links on the Right Side over there. AAR, and CamoFire. Armed American Radio, because it's awesome... and CamoFire, because A, they are awesome too, and B, a little advertising agreement. I like CamoFire and have mentioned them in the past... they are like Woot.com and offer a one day killer deal on a certain item. Very cool.

Something I'm working on... a brief Commercial for my Tactical Shotgun Course... It will be pretty cool, but because of a certain limitation (meaning the cool target) I only have 1 take on this.  So all the ducks have to be in a row before I shoot the shoot.

9-6-09:  Sunday Night: Armed American Radio just did their first 2 Hour radio broadcast. You can download it off iTunes and from the AAR website. Even though the show was 2 hours, double the time, the time flew by. The show went great and it felt somehow much more relaxed. This was a high stakes show, and once the opening music started up, it just felt at ease. That was fun. A lot of fun.

Okay, the Carbine Training on Saturday went great too. The weather was great till about 4 or so and then the wind started to pick up and knocked over a target and a barricade. Those that have taken my courses remember the Magic Pallet Barricades, well, those were retired and replaced with Magic Particle Board Barricades that are much easier, lighter, and faster to set up, and have the added bonus of not taking up all the room in the truck bed. To be honest, if I had a permanent range location where I could leave the barricades standing – I would use more pallets instead of simple particle board uprights. My target stands are great, but should have made them bigger. The great thing about them is that they are easy to set up and take down, and stack well, and fit in my truck with the other range gear very well. They could just be bigger. I would like to eventually get some steel plates, poppers and swingers and such... That would be awesome. But I'll need several courses completely full of students to get that stuff. Something to work on for next year.

I don't mean to sound like a broken record about the shotgun, but the more I tinker with my shotgun course, the more I like it. Not only that, but the more I'd rather have a shotgun instead of an AR type rifle in a Defensive Situation. A Carbine is great for a lot of work, but for CQB out to 200 yards, a proper shotgun is extremely effective.

Coming up is the September 19th Factory Range Day at the Buckskin Hills Shooting Complex. Then on the 26rh is the Defensive Handgun Course.

9-4-09:  I've some feedback both pro and con regarding Front Site. A few days ago I posted a link to a Front Site video showing some of their “Training” and said that... well you can scroll down and find it... here is one of the messages I got about that:

Hey, I just watched the video that you linked on your blog. What a bunch of crap!! She is cute, lippy, but her technique is awful and dangerous to everyone but the assailants. It's obvious that she is being instructed on the job, instead of being given proper instruction and practice before hand. Also, watch her two handed hold during the first range exercise with her Glock. She has her thumb of her support hand behind the slide, until it knocks it off. I hope the glove protected her. Good Luck on your Course. One day soon I'll get there with my kid and we'll go out and have at it. Regards. - Scott”

A proper Instructor would have taught her the most basic of all fundamental principles... the Grip. That right there was clear evidence of Front Site Suck. That is a NO GO, right there. Even if everything else was fine - that the instructor didn't correct her... that's a NO GO. Then with everything else... I can't say that maybe the instructor just didn't catch it. No... he didn't catch it because he didn't teach it. Watch that video again. We here the “Instructors” yelling a lot, but we are not hearing them teach anything. Starting from the beginning of the video, we watch the lady firing an AR. The way she holds her weapon is just wrong. The mag well grip should only be used on an AR if maybe the AR has a 6 inch barrel and built off a CavArms lower. Her reloading technique is poor as well. Very sloppy and inefficient. Her room clearing was a complete cluster. The Malf Drill was even worse. “Type Three”? WTF is a Type Three? Just call it what it is... don't Code everything. And then going back and forth in front of these rooms that she is supposed to have cleared? In a real situation with those armed targets being real armed threats... she would have been killed, and I'd blame Front Site. This is bad training... just bad training. Okay, I know that this is an actress from the crew of some show or movie or whatever... but if you are going to take some folks, get them some Familiarity with some weapons and tactics... show them how to do it right so you don't look like some low budget Spike TV production. Give them some real training and not letting them just “run the course” with guns to get a feel for it. Now I am not basing all of my opinion on FrontSite based on YouTube clips... I only use that as an example that is readily available.  Please, don't try to defend FrontSite... bad is what bad is.

A ProBama Zombie bit the finger off someone who was against ObamaCare. Oh that's just great. That ruined my Theory. See, I was thinking that ObamaCare was a split between Logan's Run and Soylent Green. Now we have to factor in Night Of The Living Dead. This is, on one hand, more disturbing than ever. On the other hand, I am well armed and well supplied. WWZ can go ahead and start rolling now... let's get this done. Okay, to be fair... sounds like the guy that got bit may have some responsibility on this one. But still... biting off fingers. Grizzly.

This is truly disappointing. SIG is jumping on the Cash For Clunker's program and doing a “Cash for you KLUNKER Handgun”. So basically you send in a Center Fire pistol, SIG will give you 200 bucks for it, with the right to refuse... So if it's Center Fire Pistol that's not a Hi Point, and it's worth more then 200 bucks, SIG will give you 200 bucks. Neat. And I also dig the “KLUNKER” jab there... so they are not just insulting your intelligence, but they are doing it with the dumbass purposefully misspelled word, in all caps. As if that makes is cute or something. The CEO of SIG needs to go down the hall, down stairs, find the jackass that came up with this idea, and kick him square in the balls. Punt for a field goal. SIG makes a damn fine weapon... but then they pull this kinda crap, which goes on top of the retarded little Red Dot optics they've put out with their name on it.... I don't even know how to articulate the wrongness of it. This is like a Factory Line of F-22 Raptors and every 10th one flaps its wings. WTF is going on there at SIG? Speaking of SIG going “Full Retard”... check this out.

September 19th we are having our factory range day. Factory Reps are coming out and showing off their guns, and people get to come and shoot them for a very low cost... whatever new gun out you want to try – you can try it and you only buy the rounds you want to fire. This is awesome. We did this last year and it was a HIT. This year we are asking the Factories not to pay to come out – we are not charging them – instead we simply asked them to Donate an Item. Swarovski and Zeiss have donated scopes, Springfield, an XD Pistol, S&W and M&P pistol, Benelli, a Super Nova... basically everyone is throwing something in gladly. Everyone that is, except SIG. SIG tells us - while acting as if they are hugely put out for the opportunity to show off their guns to the people who are actually in the market to buy them – that maybe, MAYBE, they can bring some hats and shirts. What? No, seriously... WTF, over? Should we even let them come now? I mean, everyone else is coming and chipping in and SIG expects to be able to waltz in because “Hey, we're SIG and we're awesome, and you suck and we hate you.” Yeah, they are sounding as pompous as HK did not very long ago. Yeah, SIG makes some decent weapons, but come on. You don't have to act like a snot about it.

Oh, those donated items... you can win them. We're setting up some contests that will allow the winners to be put in or a drawing. It's going to be a lot of fun and you have a chance to win something cool. This is going to be at the Buckskin Hills Shooting Complex on September 19th... Don't Miss this!

Follow Up Email on Shotgun Training: “Ogre: Videos are great, but sometimes a book can inculcate a deeper understanding of "why" something is done a particular way. If I can't afford live instruction, a combination of both is my fall-back. To that end , Mas Ayoob's Stressfire II: Advanced Combat Shotgun_ is a great help. If you can get past the dated police uniforms, his explanations go into the "why" and the possibilities of whatever technique is under discussion. I wish your NZ correspondent the best of fortune. Regards, Jason”

That's a good point, Jason. The one thing about all of this Uninstructed Training... it's pure information, not application. Thing about Riding a Bike. You can read about it. You can watch people do it. But until you get on the seat and start peddling yourself... you don't know how to ride. And it's always best to have someone help you, running along the side. Firearms are the same way. Uninstructed allows one to develop training scars... bad habits or habitual reinforcement of poor or incorrect technique. An instructor can watch you, point out what your doing wrong or how to improve the way you are doing it... so you can avoid or correct training scars. Study up as much as you can... but seek hands on training as soon as you can. Training is important for all of us, no matter how good we think we are. Training is what keeps us sharp.

9-2-09:  Some good news! Armed American Radio's first 2 hour show is this Sunday, and I will be on for the whole two hours. We will be talking about all kinds of stuff and this time, I'm actually going to have enough time to actually talk about some things... get into some depth. The one hour format just doesn't cut it, but with 2 hours, we're going to roll up our sleeves and dig in. Yes, there will be a call in number announced. Yes, you can stream it live. If you can't stream it, you can download it the next day. So you Members of The Horde, listen up and call in if you want!

Okay, this Obama Speech to the students of America... The sheer arrogance of this is shocking.  He can't get his Liberal Message across to the voters, so he's going after the voters kids. Hitler Youth, anyone? This is a arrogance, this is desperation, this is disgusting.

I get a lot of emails, sometimes it takes me some time to get through them all... but I read every one of them. That's a promise... I do. Every one. Sometimes it takes a day or even two to get through them, but I read them all. I am unable to respond to them all... but I read them. For example, here's a good one from one of The Horde over seas... New Zealand, actually:

Hi Ogre I recently decided to purchase a Mossberg 590 after a series of “incidents” that seem to be escalating in my little corner of the world. So I figured that the pump action shotgun was a more practical and safer alternative for home defence than my current Remington semi auto .22 or my very old but much loved Lee Enfield .303 and it was something that I could teach my wife to use without having to get too technical. Of course I would prefer a pistol, but as you may be aware, licences for pistols are very restrictive in terms of compliance and costs associated with owning and storing a hand gun in New Zealand. I would like to learn more about shotgun defensive techniques in general. I am ex regular force NZ army, but most of my military firearms training was “open field” (back in the day when soldiers trained to fight battles – and were not required to be policemen in built up areas) and obviously a shotgun has limited open field applications. Are you in a position to recommend any resources (books, media, websites) that might help me out. I have been a regular reader of your blog for I think well over 4 years now and I respect your knowledge and experience, so if you can throw any suggestions my way, it would be very much appreciated. Warmest regards, Peter – in NZ.

Thanks for the Email, Peter. You are on the right track... Some training resources:  I think you can hit YouTube from NZ - I've seen hits from there. This is Gunsite's training video, watch all 7 parts.  The information is a little dated, but still very valid. Then there is the thunder ranch training DVD. I'd buy the Thunder Ranch DVD, the Gunsite videos are not as good.  I don't have the TR video, but I've seen enough parts of it to know it's good. Avoid anything from FrontSite...  If you doubt that, check this out. Sure the girl is cute... but that's some useless crap right there.  That's not training... that's just doing what you are told.  I'm less than impressed. My training combines several school's shotgun techniques.   I'm not doing training videos yet, but eventually. If you get some guys together than want to do a Tactical Shotgun Course, about 12 guys, enough to cover my air fare to and fro, then I'll run down there and we'll do it! Now, you guys down there have some potential for longer ranged shots, you can still do that with a Shotgun, when firing slugs.  Heavier recoil, yes, but hits with serious authority. I've been able to make accurate hits with a shotgun out to 200 yards, reliably.  Just takes a little practice.  So I'd look for some rifle sights.  I like the 24/7 Ghost Ring sights. You can get them for your Mossy. Good luck!

I think it's pretty safe to say that after the Tactical Shotgun Course, the Shotgun will become your favorite weapon, and your first choice for defense for Bump In The Night scenarios, SHTF scenarios, and any “someone is going to die” situation. Even Julies and Vincent agree that they should have shotguns for this shit.

The Boondock Sants: All Saints Day. Official Trailer! YEAH!

9-1-09:  The Tactical Carbine Course is this coming Saturday. We have openings for more students. If you want to take any of my courses – the Tactical Carbine is the one. All the fundamental ideologies are taught here and can be translated to other weapon systems. In fact, you could run the Carbine course with a Shotgun, using some shotgun reloading techniques, and come through it just fine. There are no secrets to winning a Gun Fight. Only simple efficient techniques that let you hit the badguy first, so he can't hit you back. For those that don't know what to expect, here is an outline of what we are going to cover in the course:

This course is going to be a lot of fun. You will enjoy it... you'll have a good time... and you will learn a great deal. Those that have taken my course, can attest to these claims. The weather this weekend is currently unknown... so if you want to come, give me the heads up, (Via Email) keep an eye on the weather, and bring clothing/gear accordingly.

Course fee: 150 US Dollars. Gear: 200 Rounds of your rifle's ammunition, spare magazines and mag carriers. The rifle will need a sling. A ground cover is advisable, some drop cloth or some thing of that nature to lay on. Elbow and Knee Pads are advisable as well, but not required. This is a basic course, so bring what you would normally use. If you are at work or at church or even at home and an alarm goes up, a call for help, or threats are coming up the street – what do you grab? Bring that. A Fanny Pouch for your mag carrier, fine. Old WWII pouches, fine. You don't need to look like a Security Contractor in Iraq. If your weapon is a Lever Action, fine. A Bolt Action Carbine (IE, Jungle Carbine) that's fine too. We've had these before in the courses, also M1A SOCOM's, M-14's, SKS's, AK-47's. Whatever is your fighting rifle – bring it.
Bring lots of water, energy drinks, snacks, whatever you need to sustain your life in a hostile desert environment... Sunglasses and Sun Screen will be your best friend. If you have a shade of some sort, a portable awning of some sort, and folding chairs... you will be happy you brought them. An Ice Chest full of Beverages is a good thing and everyone will be glad you brought them. I just had my truck fixed twice and my wife's van once... I can't bring everything this time... Eat Lunch before you get to the range. We've got a lot to cover.

Time and Location: 12 Noon on Saturday, September 5th at the Buckskin Hills Range. To get to the range from Vernal, Utah: Travel north on Vernal Avenue. Turn East on 500 North. Follow 500 North past all the residential housing, past farm fields, past the Ashley Creek, past more farm fields, up a hill and bear left past the Vernal City Dump and travel about a mile and a quarter till you hit the Buckskin Hill Shooting Complex on the Left. You will see at one of the open range bays, a Silver Chevy Pickup Truck with Dark Tinted Windows. That's my truck. Approach with Caution.
