04-29-08: It was a slaughter.
Ben and I hit a huge ranch area that was over run with Prairie Dogs.
South of Pelican Lake. Nice open area. We rolled in and started
killing just a few feet within the gate. We started out with some
RimFire action. Ben has a Ruger Charger, their little pistol based
off the 10/22 rifle. Great little gun. I was using an old Marlin
model 60. I was also testing out a new load I've never shot before.
Winchester Super X RN with a 40 grain slug at 1300 FPS. The load is
very good, very consistent and it was very accurate. However the
performance on the Prairie Dogs was disappointing. These rounds
zipped straight through the little bastards with no dramatic effect.
Several had to be hit 3 times or so before they'd act like it. You
would see the smack, hear the smack, but the dog would still run...
they didn't run very far... and would ending up rolling and kicking,
if they didn't fall into a hole and disappear to die in the dark.
There are two hits, one in
the head and one in the body... not so dramatic of a result save for
the avulsed eye.
Ben was busting out his
Bushmaster topped with a Nikon Monarch, using 50 grain HP Ultramax
and that stuff was fantastic. It would open the dogs up and spread
them around a bit. Gruesome. This makes me want to get into an
autoloading varminter... you can see the dog below, hit in the
head... that's a dead dog.
Now, let's be quite clear
here – the Rancher was THRILLED we wanted to shoot up some Prairie
Dogs. The dog do a lot of damage to a field if let to roam
unchecked. These critters can cause injuries to livestock and damage
to farm equipment. They are a huge problem. So either people shoot
the Prairie Dogs – or the Ranchers have to poison the whole area
which can kill other animals such as birds... hawks, owls, and other
birds... ground squirrels and chipmunks, etc... and this isn't good.
We don't want to kill everything... just the harmful ones.
Down Shift for Top Gear?
The UK has a law that requires token ethnic guy, chick, and gay guy.
There is a push to make Top Gear hire a female Presenter. One of
the things that makes Top Gear such a great show, is the chemistry
between the three Presenters. James May, aka, Captain Slow. Richard
Hammond, aka, The Hamster, and Jeremy Clarkson, aka, the Arrogant
Dickhead. These guys have been doing this show for some time now.
They knew each other, work well with each other, harsh each other
without crossing the line too much... and they all know cars and
have insights that make the show work. Other places have attempted
to make similar shows – but they didn't work because they didn't
have the right mix of presenters. Top Gear does it right and you
can't copy it and if you take one of these 3 away – you don't have
Top Gear anymore. You add in the Token Chick – and you are pretty
much going to have the same thing as you had when there was The Top
Gear Dog. The Dog rode in the back and had no lines. This would be
in effect, bringing back the Top Gear Dog. Harsh role for any
female.
Now the question is... which
female out there would have the balls to join the Top Gear Crew? She
would have to be attractive, but not in the “Spice Girls” sort of
way... she would have to be smart and car savy... She would have to
look good in Blue Jeans, because while it's Top Gear's Policy to
Harsh America as much as possible, they worship everything from
America that doesn't come out of Detroit.
I can think of only one
woman that could step up.
Sabine Schmitz. She fits the bill perfectly. She's attractive,
savy, has some attitude, and can drive better than 95% of NASCAR.
She took a van around the Nurburging... a van!
Her time was almost as fast in a van as Jeremy's time in a
performance car. (Be sure to watch that clip all the way to the
end, where Sabine does her run in the same car Jeremy was in) She is
the only woman that I know of that could be a Top Gear presenter.
04-28-09: Political Prostitution.
March 17th, Arlen Specter talks about how important
it is to maintain political balance. Today, he throws that into the
wind and changes parties. This isn't just changing teams, this is
about principles. When you throw your principles away for political
gains, you become a political whore. A worthless whore. I'm not
going to say useless... whores are always useful for something...
So is a condom. Once used for their purpose, they are easily
discarded and forgotten. Arlen Specter, congratulations, you sir are
a whore. The Dems are going to use you, then you are going to
get tossed and forgotten.
Out here in Utah, we are
in the Prairie Dog Proscribed Season... Meaning – until June 15th,
you can not shoot any prairie dogs. Unless of course you are on
Private Property. Well, there is a ranch south of me that is quite
large, and currently being over run with the little bastards. Ben
and I have front row seats to a Prairie Dog Slaughter... (insert evil
laughter sounds) This is going to be a P-Dog Holocaust tomorrow.
04-27-09: This was sent to me via
email from our Hordesman Murray: “Isn't it fabulous how Obama
has reconciled with our enemies and put fear into the hearts of
Americans? Does any image illustrate so neatly the wrongheadedness
of the Obama administration than Americans scrambling in terror from
Air Force One?” This quote comes from blogger “Tantor” who's
blog
Conservative Propaganda, has just made the blogroll. I was going
to post something along those lines, but Tantor nailed it so
completely, nothing else needs to be said on the subject. The
American Warmonger, at work today opinined that this just
illustrates how out of touch the Administration is. According to ABC
News, that Obama knew nothing about this happening and was furious.
I'm going to give Barry the benefit of the doubt on this one... but
his administration as a whole takes responsibility on this one. This
is tantamount to flying a B-29 over Tokyo. This was asinine.
Okay, we've got in some
new SIG 556 rifles. We had the SIG 556 Pistol, and the SIG 556
standard, but today we got in the SIG 556 Classic and the 556 SWAT
Classic. The one thing I noticed about the Classics isn't just that
it's a different stock... but that it's a different lower receiver
too. The Classic style stock uses a hinge that is actually a part of
the lower, were as the other SIG's use a lower that has an AR type
connection. Totally different. The normal SWAT and other Folder
556's use a rather clunk block that the stock attaches to. The
folder on the Classic series is much nicer, I'll admit... but this
leaves you no options for the stock. So if you get the Classic –
Hope you like that stock. Now the Classic Forend is much more
streamlined, much lighter, and overall makes the 556 Classic feel
like it's a much smaller and lighter weapon. In fact, I like the SIG
556 Classic a great deal. Had this been the option when I got mine –
I'd have taken the Classic. It's like a whole new weapon... lighter
and faster handling. It's bloody fantastic. In fact, I like that so
much, I'm considering getting a set of the Classic hand guards for
mine. The Classic and the Pistol versions both came with a nifty little
red dot sight. I like the sight a lot, and think it's pretty
cool. But I have to admit that I hate it on the SIG 556 platform.
It's too low for a Co-Witness as the dot is right in the front sight
post... it's too low. You want the dot to be above the front sight
post. This just doesn't work. The dot, being as cool as it is, needs
another home. It would be great on a Browning Buckmark Carbine or
something more recreational. For a serious use red dot, you want it
higher for a proper co-witness, and you want a wider field of view.
The SIG dot has no field of view... the sight has a diameter about
the same as a coin... I want bigger... like 30mm on a Red Dot.
04-25-09: Trigger Reset: Who
has the shortest trigger reset? You can try out all your
auto-pistols and check it out... your results might surprise you. I
found a big surprise today. The shortest reset I found was on the
new Taurus PT840. It has hardly any travel at all before it clicks
to reset. I mean, almost none. Not any pistol I had came even close.
Glocks, Walther P99's, XD's, SIG's, nothing. This is amazing.
This is like test driving a bunch of cars, and finding the Mercury
Sable having the fastest 0-60 launch times. Completely unexpected.
But seriously, this new 800 series pistols from Taurus are very
good. Taurus hit a home run. The 845 impressed me a lot... and now
the 840... I had to look at the gun again to read the name on it...
“This is a Taurus?” It has some typical Taurus cosmetics, but under
the “looks”, it feels more solid, feels competent. It feels like a
good gun.
Speaking of Cars, GM is
killing off the Pontiac brand. Good. This is a long time
overdue. Pontiac has been a losing brand for some time. They killed
Olds years too late, and now they stepped up at put Pontiac's head
on the block... Bravo. Sure, Pontiac has some good and proud
history. That's fine. But that doesn't give you legacy to build cars
no one wants and then expect a government bailout. Let's trim some
more fat here. Buick needs to go too. Saturn? Caddy? They are doing
well with some good innovative options. Saab? Roll Saab into Saturn.
GMC could focus on large fleet trucks and kill everything else.
Hummer, and the other GMC trucks could be rolled into Chevy. Thus GM
is left with just Chevy, Caddy, and Saturn. They also need to make
sure that their product lines do not compete with their own product
lines. Right now, GM is doing a lot of competition with GM. That's
losing profitability the hard way. They should focus on competing
against Ford or Dodge and everyone else. I tell you what – you give
me 1 week at GM with Total Control, and I could have GM turning a
profit. Of course a key factor in that success would be getting rid
of the Union, and I think that can be accomplished if we could get
the other automakers to agree to play ball the same way. Refusal to
recognize any union and any existing union contracts. Yes, this is
super harsh. But it's either time to play hard ball, or close shop
for good. Because living off taxpayer's dole is not going to happen.
That brings me to another
topic.
Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano. She's the one that
labeled veterans potential terrorists, she is the one that said she
stood by her remarks. She is the moron that needs to be fired. So
now that she's felt some heat, according to this article, “she
admitted the fault within her office.” Wow, isn't that great... she
apologized for her office. She didn't apologize for herself... she
didn't take the blame, she blamed her office. This isn't
nearly good enough. Especially when you compile her long list of
incompetent fumbles and outrageous gaffs. This woman needs to be
escorted off capitol hill by security and not be allowed back into
any public office. I am surprised that not is she still there, but
that she doesn't wear a red rubber ball nose. She is the second
biggest douche bag of the Obama Administration next to Joe Biden.
Speaking of Joe...
Biden almost became the President. Obama meets a guy down in Mexico,
and 2 day later that guy dies of this new Avian Bird Flu, Swine Flu
Mutant Super Flu. As bad as Obama is – the Nation just dodged the
Biden Bullet. Now, this flu... how great is this... Mexico closes
all public events, but refuses to close the border. The US also
refuses to close the border even after we have found outbreaks in
NYC, Kansas, and California, all people coming from or contact from
Mexico... This virus is spreading extremely fast and simple protocol
is not being followed. Containment of the dangerous pathogen isn't
happening because we don't want to offend the Mexicans.
We'll kill off our own Constitution, just to keep Mexico happy.
Excuse me, but who the fuck is Mexico to dictate how we live in
America? And why is Obama bowing down to them? Latin America should
kneel before the USA, not the other way around. And now Cuba,
Venzeuala, and Nicaragua is saying that
Capitalism is threating the life on the planet? WTF? Communism
kills more people than Free Trade. When Does Communism help anyone
but the Communist Leaders? How many Communist Countries have stopped
hunger? Have helped fight malaria in Africa? Have found cures for
disease? The only think I can think of right now that has come from
Latin America that I could spend some time with is Salma Hyak,
Shakira, and a platter of Enchiladas. These annoying little
communists have been becoming more and more irritating. Cuba and
Venezuela especially. How about this – if they STFU and have
democratic elections – we'll give them all of our Hollywood
Celebrities and minor shares of Major League Baseball.
Back to the Firearms
Industry. Like I was saying, Brazil's own Taurus is doing great – so
I shouldn't bash all of Latin America. I apologize for my office for
putting out that post.
Winchester is brining out a
new line of ammunition that looks like it might show some promise...
Winchester's “Power Max”... a direct rip off of Federal's “Fusion”
line. I think it's great for these guys to continue to innovate and
bring out new stuff. But I think it would be even better if they
could fulfill the commitments of existing orders. We have primers
and ammunition on order so thick and heavy, that it would fill the
whole store if it all came at the same time. I know these guys are
operating at max capacity... but it's not good enough. Already this
year we've (we as in the whole industry) sold 3 times the amount of
ammunition as all of last year. And last year primers were already
hard to get. Primers remain our weakness. If you want to make a
bundle in the Gun Industry, build a factory that makes Primers. You
will be printing your own money.
04-24-09: I purchased something
I've not had in more years than I care to remember...
I got myself a Baseball Glove. A
Rawlins “Sandlot” “Fastback” in “Retro Leather”. We have a ton
of different glove options, and I tried on all of them... I kept
coming back to this one.... kind of old fashioned, has some wool
inside, real comfy, and the leather is supple. Nothing felt as good.
I love this glove. I've used other guy's gloves, and never really
took to them. This one, I love it. When I came home from work
tonight, I stopped at the ball field and intercepted 2 of my boys...
they were surprised and glad to play some simple catch with Dad. We
played catch for an hour before it started to rain a bit. It's the
simplest joys in life that make it worth while. Stupid Rain.

what I want to know.
STONE & LAW:
I'm going to throw a shout out to a couple friends of mine in the
Defense Industry... as in... if you need some Defense. It's going to
be getting easier and easier to get into trouble... we are being
made villains and they are going to come after us. When they
do –
Call these guys. They will have your back. They are on our side.
Put them on retainer, get their cards... because one of these days,
you are going to need them... and they need some business... Harold
needs a bigger car.... I can't ride in the back of his little car
anymore... my spine feels like it's origami trying to unfold out of
that thing. I don't think anyone else in Utah is going to
defend you better.
04-23-09:
Erosion of Freedom: US Forest
Service / Ashley National Forest: Motorized Travel Plans, Public
Meeting held at Western Park. They started the meeting off by saying
that they had identified 3 main usage problems, with the biggest
being ATV-OHV use. So the answer to this, they are shutting down all
OHV use save for on specifically designated trails... all use off
these trails is absolutely prohibited, unless special permit is
granted for such things as emergency, fire, or search and rescue.
The viewpoint of the US Forest Service is that YOU shouldn't be on
there in the US Forest.... ATV's (and they came out and said this)
allow too much access to back wood areas. Not only did they restrict
the trails you can use, but they also specified that you can only
camp at specifically designated areas within 150 feet of the trail,
and more than 100 feet from water.
My question is if they are
funneling all ATV traffic into just a few specific paths – creating
virtual OHV highways – when are they putting in the traffic lights?
What's funny – funny as in we all recognize the deception attempt is
that they showed trails where “ATV's had caused problems.” but they
didn't show where ATVs went... they showed tracks of where big 4x4
pickups went and tore things up. So instead of enforcing the law on
those obviously breaking the laws, they are shutting it down for
everyone.
After they explained their reasons
for closing everything, they opened the floor to comments. Each
comment was followed by them explaining why they know more about our
mountain than we do. They used ownership language such as “Our Trail
System” - not ours and in yours and mine, but “ours” as in The US
Forest Service's.
One girl mentioned that a trail
that she had used all her life was closed at the start of hunting
season last year and has remained closed since. She told of frequent
and continual attempts to call for information which all remained
unanswered. I kid you not, these guys responded with “call us”. This
was such a joke, but they were serious. They meant that... like
“call us – and fuck you very much.” That was the apparent attitude.
Another lady mentioned always camping at a specific location way
back off the trail... her family – and let me tell you, her family
name goes back to the beginning of recorded history in this area –
has camped there for ages since before there was a US Forest Service
or an Ashley National Forest – The Feds response was to let them
know where so they can look at the possibility of granting access to
that area. The audacity of this is appalling. People used to have
the right to go there into our mountain, and now we have to ask
permission for privilege of going where they had been going for
generations. The only erosion I see in the Ashley is our Freedom.
I'll be the first to admit that I
don't like ATV's. They are noisy, and the riders are quite often
oblivious to the disruption they are causing when someone is aiming
a rifle at game and they ride right in front of you, busting your
hunt. That happens all the time and every hunter I know has such a
story. ATV's are rude. However that doesn't mean we ban all ATV's
off every trail that isn't a designated Forest Freeway. The key word
is Designated. Meaning that there are tons of old trails that people
have been using forever that are not officially numbered and
designated – all those trails are not illegal to use.
I've a proposal for the US Forest
Service. The problem is not use, but unethical use. The Department
of Wildlife addressed this problem the smart way. Shed Hunting is
becoming popular... but some unethical hunters chase herds in the
hope that this will cause some sheds to drops. The solution was a
Shed Hunting Permit... available for free if you take the online
course and there you go... you can now go hunt your sheds ethically.
Brilliant solution... not a perfect solution but brilliant in that
it addresses the problem. The US Forest Service's solution to “the
problem” is to funnel everyone into a traffic pattern that is easier
to enforce and ticket. The goal here that they did not say is
revenue generation, plain and simple. By putting everyone together,
they can write more tickets and make more money than if everyone was
dispersed because that would be too hard to monitor. It all comes
down to the money... it always comes down to money.
Read the regulations HERE. All comments are due by June 1st
and policy will be in effect by October 9th
– right before Hunting Season. How convient for them... limit use
and limit hunting. Oh – one more thing about the hunting... You can
NOT go off the trail to retrieve game. No exceptions even for those
mobility challenged. This is blatant discrimination against the
disabled. The American Disability Act evidently means nothing to the
US Forest Service... according to the US Forest Service guys, if you
are disabled – you shouldn't be hunting or enjoying the outdoors.
I so hope I get the chance to join
the Utah State Legislature. Because I'm going to draft legislation
that returns all of Utah State to the Utah State... The Feds can
keep their military bases and ranges, and the rest of the State
returns to Utah State Ownership. We can regulate our own forests.
(Of course I know that wont pass –
but I want the message sent and heard)
04-22-09: What did you do for Earth
Day? I went shooting. Twice.
Fired 50 rounds of .40 cal through my P229 and another 40 rounds of
5.56mm through my M4gery. The second time I was with some good guys,
a couple lawyers from SLC. One had a Remington R25 in .308 topped
with a Zeiss Rapid Z 3-9. I think if I wanted to buy another .308
precision rifle, I'd have to get it in a Semi Auto. The action and
the way it soaks up the recoil. It's just fantastic. You could get
the scope back onto target and see the hit. Very nice. Greg shooting
his .308 and me shooting my 5.56... the sounds of his hits compared
to the sound of my hits – it was like I was the little brother
tagging along. Almost felt stupid.
Now, let's look at these semi-auto
.308's. I know there are a lot of good AR-10/SR-25 rifles out there.
But one of them is very reasonably priced and boasts an accuracy
promise of ½ MOA. It's the FNAR. Right now at this moment (and that
might change in the future) the FNAR would be my choice. Here's
why... the other options can't deliver the accuracy for less that 2
grand. The FNAR can. The others were built as .308s, which is fine,
but the FNAR was built as a .300 WSM, so shooting .308's out of that
action is a cake walk. That action remains perfectly rigid and
stable, making the rifle all the more consistent. The FNAR also
sounds like a monster from some D&D game. Okay, that's stupid, but
still... beware the FNAR's... I'm telling you. I'd top it with a new
scope that I examined that several of the guys at work picked up (I
chose the EL's) and I really like them. I'm talking about the
Swarovski Z6 – 2-12 with the BR reticle. The BR system is used like
the Zeiss Rapid Z system which I like, but with a finer reticle –
which I like more for precision shooting. The 2 power is low enough
that you can use it on a tactical gun, yet zoom in to 12X if you
need it. So for short range work to long range work – the Z6 does
it. And it does it with huge eye relief and a nice wide 30mm tube
that give you a huge eye box to work in... had I seen this Z6, I
might have got with it over the EL Binos – and I'd have put it on my
SIG 556.
So am I supposed to be
feeling sorry for this Somali Pirate because he cried when was put
before the law? Am I supposed to care? Because I don't think he
cried when he was pointing an AK-47 at my fellow Americans. I don't
think he cried when he took the Captain hostage. And I don't think
we should just release him because he came aboard our ship under a
white flag. The white flag is not meaning he gets off scottfree...
it means we don't shoot him in the head at the first chance we get.
His white flag also means the hostage should not be hurt while he
was on the ship. Something happened, the captain ordered the shots
fired and the hostage was liberated. At that point, the white flag
no longer held. It shows the great mercy of the US Navy that this
pirate was not blown off the deck and let the body sink into the sea
to feed the sharks and crabs. This is the most fortunate pirate in
the last 200 years. No, he gets no sympathy from me. He should also
get no sympathy from the US Justice System.
David Kellermann, the
Freddie Mac CFO found dead... Yes, this looks suspicious. Yes, I
think he was murdered. However, being one of the least popular
people in the US... can't say that his self esteem would be all that
high. Now if we could just get the same thing to happen to Barney
Frank, I'd actually crack a smile over this situation. Really, I
don't care about this guy... but if it was murder, well, the dude
got the wrong guy. Janet Napolitano blames CANADA for 9/11?
WTF? Wow. This lady just trumped every 9/11 Conspiracy Theory
that I've ever heard. This lady isn't the sinister monster I thought
she was...
she's an imbecile. And actually, that makes her worse than a
sinister monster... because an imbecile in charge of homeland
security is worse... because in real life, Mr. Bean doesn't have
happy endings.
So here we are, Secretary of
Homeland Security and the Obama Administration saying that the guys
who flys planes into our buildings and cuts the heads off kidnapped
victims are not terrorists, but those that risk their lives
defending the USA just might be... and now those that extract
critical information – information that we would have had by other
means had the Clintons not GUTTED the CIA – those guys are going to
end up getting prosecuted because they got that information by not
being nice. So in every case so far, it's not the enemy... it's our
fault. Had we not been in Iraq... you know... this is just so much
bullshit because I am pretty damn sure The Twin Towers did not got
to Iraq either. I am pretty sure that The Twin Towers did not
prevent UN Weapon Inspectors from doing complete and timely
inspections according to UN Treaty. Yet some how this is all our
fault.
SIG 556 Pistol: We
got one it. It's cool as hell. And it begs to have a shoulder stock.
To put a should stock on it would require a special license because
a rifle barrel shorter than 16 inches is especially evil and contain
that evil you must pay a 200 dollar tax. Paying arbitrary taxes of
course makes everything angelic. Holding the SIG Pistol and
imagining it with a legal SBR tag and a nice adjustable stock does
make me think of wings... but they are black and leathery not white
and feathery.
04-21-09: Basin Sports has a new
website up and it looks sharp. New site, new logo, new features.
We still have to work on filling it with the products, but all the
foundation work is complete. Okay, so we have some camp stoves and a
sleeping in there so far... but we're getting there. We have tons of
stuff to put in there, this is going to take time. Our store has a
VAST selection of everything you need for sports and outdoors. Give
us a call at Basin Sports and give us some feedback. We are thinking
about doing a completely different site just for firearms and stuff.
Anyways, for now – If you need something check with the Ogre first.
Flashlights, Camping Gear, Backpacks, Fishing rods and reels, and of
course... Anything having to do with firearms. Targets, Cleaning
Kits, Scopes, all that.
To kick off our new site –
We've got a sick deal going on Swarovski Binos. I can't say the
price here, but you can get your Swarovski at a price you are not
going to believe – and we are throwing in a bino carry harness.
I love mine!
04-20-09: This guy nails it.
The Americas. I've often thought that the
USA needs to take an active roll in Central and South America. We
often ignore almost everything going on South of the Border... and
especially south of Panama. The USA just doesn't give a damn. This
is why Russia and China have been able to make serious in roads. I
mean, hell, Russia is in Cuba and that's just off the coast of
Florida.
So now we have Obama making
some effort with the other America Countries. I think this is a good
thing – but I am not pleased with the way he's going about it. The
USA is not the cause of all the ills in all the other countries on
this side of the world. But look at what we have going on now.
Castro's regime is opening up to us. Venezuela is opening back up to
us. These strides are steps in the right directions... Because the
more we get them on our side – the less likely we'll see Russian
Warships so near Miami.
However for us to get a BFF
Cuba and BFF Venzy, we should not give up anything. We want them to
give up something if they want to suckle off of us. We allow travel
and spending in Cuba – what do we get in return? We promise not to
have Hugo Chavez knocked off – what do we get in return? What's in
it for us? Because I'm seeing a huge potential for Obama to just
hand these guys anything they want. This isn't how we should play
it. We are the ones holding all the cards, so we get to deal them if
they want to play. And they do want to play. Of course they have to
make a show in the name of bravado.... to look tough... but they
want to play. Desperately.
See, South America and
Central America have a lot of resources. Minerals, Oil, Gold...
wealth... good old fashioned wealth. Good people. Interesting
Cultures. Interesting History. Lots of good reasons to get involved.
Not like we are involved in the Middle East, not involved in a huge
Cluster. It would be easy to get into trouble down there, if we
don't do it right. Obama isn't doing it right. In fact, the way he's
going about it is dangerous. I'm not liking where this is going.
I've grown tired of the
overwhelming number of rabid liberal morons on Digg.com. So I
replaced Digg with
Keep and Bear Arms over there on the left column. I should have
linked those guys up long before. My Bad. But all of you in The
Horde (Note to FBI, “The Horde” is not an actual organization and I
keep no member list... it's just what I call the regular readers of
MadOgre.com) should bookmark Keep And Bear Arms and refer to that
frequently. Here's why. 60 Minutes did everything they could do to
show that owning guns for self defense is useless and we shouldn't
even try. Keep and Bear Arms logs all the cases where personal arms
have been used to protect the owners. They also keep track of news
stories that deal with our Liberty. Bookmark it, and hit it at least
once a week. Great site.
Optics: Swarovski
made a deal with my shop. I'm not going to go into what this deal
is, but let me tell you this – I'm getting a set of
10x42 EL Binos. This is the best Bino I've ever seen. It's
almost 2 grand. Two Thousand Dollars. I wanted one the first time I
looked through a pair... but I thought I would NEVER be able to have
one. I'm giddy. I was going to get a rifle scope... but I decided
I'd rather snag the Binos. I have a couple pairs that are decent...
but nothing like an EL. I can't wait.
04-18-09: This breaks the laws of
physics, gravity and probably some other laws in Utah and
Pennsylvania too. One of The Horde regulars sent me this. Now, I
have to admit, this really isn't my thing considering the origins of
this new “sport”... but taking it
from a Dance and Gymnastic perspective, you have admit, it's amazing.
Might not be safe for work. These girls are incredible, and not hard
to look at either. Unless one of them was your daughter.
I don't get Liberals.
Liberal - “We need
alternative energy! Power from wind, the sun, man.”
Conservative: “Okay,
let's build some solar farms.”
Liberal - “No way man, we
have to protect the desert.”
First off – you shouldn't
have any say in the matter when it comes to protecting any area of
the ground – if you don't live there or frequent there. If you don't
even know where it is – STFU. You think a solar farm would harm the
desert tortoise? You know what? I live in the desert, and I've never
seen a desert tortoise. I've seen a lot of other reptiles though.
Lizards and snakes. You know what they are doing? Looking for shade.
A solar farm would put a lot of shade on the ground. I think these
poor scorched reptiles would love it. You know what, I think these
reptiles are just too hot. We need a movement – all you hippies, go
rescue these poor overheated reptiles, and take them to where the
can be nice and cool. Take them to Alaska. Its Bush's fault they
can't naturally migrate anymore! Go! Now! Take the tortoises and
lizards and snakes up to Anchorage and let them free in the parks
and forests where they can run and play and enjoy not being scorched
in the hot sun! Fucking Bush!
Because of the
Administrations attempts to make villains out of Right Wing Former
Military. I'm giving another shout out to
The Oath Keepers. We swore oaths to protect and defend the
Constitution of the United States. And that oath doesn't have an
Expiration Date.
04-17-09: Who is this guy we have
to call The President? While there is no more terrorism in the
Middle East – just “Man Made Disasters” and we are not fighting a
war on terror, just performing Overseas Contingency Operations...
This guy is bowing before the Saudi King... and now he's smiling and
shaking hands with Hugo Chavez. What's next? A man-date with Putin
and a hot tub party with Kim Jong Ill? And yet the biggest threat to
American Security is our Ex-Military, Christians, and NRA members.
This just turns common sense on its ear.
Obama gets credit for the
safe rescue of the captain that was taken by pirates? I got this in
the email today:
"Having spoken to some
SEAL pals here in Virginia Beach
yesterday and asking why
this thing dragged out for 4 days, I got the
following:
1. BHO wouldn't authorize
the DEVGRU/NSWC SEAL teams to
the scene for 36 hours going
against OSC (on scene commander)
recommendation.
2. Once they arrived, BHO
imposed restrictions on their
ROE that they couldn't do
anything unless the hostage's life was in
"imminent" danger
3. The first time the
hostage jumped, the SEALS had the
raggies all sighted in, but
could not fire due to ROE restriction
4. When the navy RIB came
under fire as it approached
with supplies, no fire was
returned due to ROE restrictions. As the
raggies were shooting at the
RIB, they were exposed and the SEALS had
them all dialed in.
5. BHO specifically denied
two rescue plans developed
by the Bainbridge CPN and
SEAL teams
6. Bainbridge CPN and SEAL
team CDR finally decide they
have the OpArea and OSC
authority to solely determine risk to hostage.
4 hours later, 3 dead
raggies
7. BHO immediately claims
credit for his "daring and
decisive" behaviour. As
usual with him, it's BS.
So per our last email
thread, I'm downgrading Oohbaby's
performace to D-. Only
reason it's not an F is that the hostage
survived.
Read the following accurate
account.
Philips' first leap into the
warm, dark water of the
Indian Ocean hadn't worked
out as well. With the Bainbridge in range and
a rescue by his country's
Navy possible, Philips threw himself off of
his lifeboat prison,
enabling Navy shooters onboard the destroyer a
clear shot at his captors -
and none was taken.
The guidance from National
Command Authority - the
president of the United
States,
Barack Obama - had been
clear: a peaceful solution was
the only acceptable outcome
to this standoff unless the hostage's life
was in clear, extreme
danger.
The next day, a small Navy
boat approaching the floating
raft was fired on by the
Somali pirates - and again no fire was returned
and no pirates killed. This
was again due to the cautious stance assumed
by Navy personnel thanks to
the combination of a lack of clear guidance
from Washington and a
mandate from the commander in chief's staff not to
act until Obama, a man with
no background of dealing with such issues
and no track record of
decisiveness, decided that any outcome other than
a "peaceful
solution" would be
acceptable.
After taking fire from the
Somali kidnappers again
Saturday night, the on scene
commander decided he'd had enough.
Keeping his authority to act
in the case of a clear and
present danger to the
hostage's
life and having heard
nothing from Washington since yet
another request to mount a
rescue operation had been denied the day
before, the Navy officer -
unnamed in all media reports to date -
decided the AK47 one captor
had leveled at Philips' back was a threat to
the hostage's life and
ordered the NSWC team to take their shots.
Three rounds downrange
later, all three brigands became
enemy KIA and Philips was
safe.
There is upside, downside,
and spinside to the series of
events over the last week
that culminated in yesterday's dramatic rescue
of an American hostage.
Almost immediately following
word of the rescue, the
Obama administration and its
supporters claimed victory against pirates
in the Indian Ocean and [1]
declared that the dramatic end to the
standoff put paid to
questions of the inexperienced president's
toughness and decisiveness.
Despite the Obama
administration's (and its sycophants')
attempt to spin yesterday's
success as a result of bold, decisive
leadership by the
inexperienced president, the reality is nothing of the
sort. What should have been
a standoff lasting only hours - as long as
it took the USS Bainbridge
and its team of NSWC operators to steam to
the location - became an
embarrassing four day and counting standoff
between a ragtag handful of
criminals with rifles and a U.S. Navy
warship."
So here we read just how the
US Navy feels about Obama's Leadership. Good hell. If it was to be
left up to Obama, we would probably have surrendered to these
pirates. Obama did nothing to help our fellow American in need, and
in fact did things to keep him in danger. I'm not impressed with
young Obama, and neither is the Navy.
04-16-09:
REMOVE JANET NAPOLITANO FROM
OFFICE NOW. We don't have Terrorists in
Afghanistan and Iraq anymore... but we have Ex-Military
Conservatives who are Potential Terrorists according to the
Secretary of Homeland Security, Janet Napolitano. You
know what? One of the problems we have in our nation is that we
don't have enough real leaders – we have Secretaries. She should go
take notes for someone else and let a real leader stand up.
04-15-09: Guys, I am full on in
love with this gun cleaner.
M-Pro 7. Brownells has it. This stuff cleans like nothing else,
is easy to use, fast, and has no odor like other cleaners. You guys
have got to get some and try it. If I had a million bucks, I'd buy
it for all my regular readers. But I being a poor man, have only my
dreams. So you guys will have to order it for yourselves.
M-PRO 7 GUN CLEANER
- Gets gun bores squeaky clean and shining but is harmless to
all metal surfaces, including titanium, aluminum and stainless
steel. Actually breaks down carbon so copper and lead fouling float
free; completely odorless, non-flammable, non-toxic, biodegradable
and environmentally safe to use. Penetrates hydrocarbon-based
greases, oils (will remove oil-based stock finishes) and gun powder
residues; strips the metal completely clean with no oily feel. Heat
and agitation will accelerate the cleaning action. Can be used as a
tank solvent. Not a lubricant.
You can get the 4 ounce
spray bottle for 10 bucks. Just a warning to you though... if you
get some... you'll be hooked. I've used it on my SIG 556, Rock
River, SIGs, Kimbers, Remingtons, Savages, Weatherbys, Brownings...
uh... let me put it this way... you'll want a couple of the bigger 8
ounce bottles.
Now, to lube your guns...
check out some
SLIP 2000 Gun Lube. LittleLebowski on WTA, Former Marine, swears
by the stuff. In spite of our continually conflicts of opinions on
things – he's a good guy and often correct for a Marine. Yes, I've
got some on order myself.
TEAPARTY DAY: In
Vernal, Utah we had our Tea Party just like others across this
nation. It was a good rally. Many people got up and spoke, including
yours truly. People got fired up. Unfortunately, that's all it is...
a rally. In and of its self, the rally is pointless because it does
not effect change. The only way to really effect change is to get
out and vote. If we can get the silent majority really fired up so
that we have a voter turnout greater than 20% -- then we can
actually make a difference. But still... the rally was good. It felt
good. I'll post some photos.
04-13-09: One of the very worst
things to cut from the Federal Budget is the F-22 Raptor. Yes,
the plane is expensive. Hideously expensive. But there is nothing
else that does what the F-22 can do. It's science fiction, the stuff
it can do. No one has a jet that can match it. This is the type of
thing we need to buy with out money, because it absolutely insures
our continual dominance of airspace over any and every battle field.
Nothing can tangle with our Raptors, and get away. Nothing. This is
what will insure our victory in future war. The Government is
continuing it's life long policy of Preparing to Fight The Last War
Again, instead of Preparing To Fight The Next War. If we have to
roll into Baghdad again, let me tell you – we are READY. But what if
we have to roll into Bombay, or Bangkok, or Bejing? Are we ready for
that war? No. The military has to look at future threats, and come
up with plans. Unfortunately our military doesn't actually prepare
for them.
Look at our future threats.
China remains a high level
threat in my opinion. We have to realize that. China's military is
gear from the ground up to counter our military. We are geared up to
counter nothing substantial. Not even bad press. I'm not saying
China could ever beat us – I'm saying we need to get ready for them
because China will land a sucker punch on us, and they are going to
hit below the belt. It's going to hurt. We need to be ready for our
counter move... a finishing move to end China quickly and
effectively.
One of the key strategies to
this centers around our dominance of the sky. And a key asset for
that is the F-22 Raptor that has just been cut back.
There a lot of things in the
military that can be cut back on. The Raptor is not one of them. I'd
like to super-fund a couple programs... the F-22 is one. The Side
Arm is another. Again, it's my opinion that everyone in the
military, from the moment they get out of Boot Camp, they are give 2
things. First is a side arm, an automatic pistol that they keep with
them for the rest of their lives, never to leave their sides while
in uniform. The second is a knife, a long fixed blade, worn on their
sides. The gun and blade, symbols of their office, their oath, and
their duty. Training would be enhanced. I'd have our men and women
train in the use of Small Arms regardless of their military career
path. If they want to keep their job in the military – they must be
proficient in the use of their weapons. Marksmanship scores with
rifle and pistol would be added to the PT requirements. Every member
of the Military should be able to fight... this goes for all
branches. Hand to hand training should be increased. PT should be
part hand to hand training. Physical training should be mixed with
this hand to hand training.
I'd be willing to spend a
hell of a lot more on this... more money, more time. This should be
the focus of the military. The individual should be effective alone.
More individuals should only magnify that capability.
The standard American Rifle
for the US Military should be something that is more effective than
what we have now. A new caliber, a new operating system, a new
weapon completely. The SCAR Heavy or the Magpul Massoud .308 would
be good options. I'd like to see a .308 if possible or 6.5 Grendel
otherwise.
The Army's basic asset for
transportation is the HUMVEE. I think this rig should continue in
it's current mission as it fills the role quite well. In fact, it's
a victim of it's own success. It's so bloody good that people think
it's an APC. Where it fails is when people start using it like an
APC in situations where an APC should have been used. It's not a
tank.... it's an overgrown Jeep. It's never been intended to be used
as an APC. So for those situations, we should have an APC to deploy.
I want a light armored vehicle. Like a Mini Stryker. I want it
shorter, lighter, narrower, and I want it armed to the teeth. I want
it to be able to move in and around cities and towns. And I want it
to be fast, with long range. Crew of 2. A driver and a gunner. The
gunner is the one in charge.
These are things I'd have us
spend money on for the military. Revamp it from the ground up. And
as far as those Raptors are concerned.... I want 300 of them.
Congratulations to the US
Navy: They killed the pirates and saved our man. This is what
you could call a happy ending. Unfortunately they are not finished.
We have 3 dead pirates from a nation of pirates.
Somalia has a culture of hijacking. To fight this, you could
wait for the next one...
or you could take the fight to the pirates. In my book
“Privateer” the heroes do just that. They find a pirate staging
area, infiltrate... and when they leave... there is nothing standing
or floating. I advocate that this is the action that our US Navy and
allies need to take. We need to cripple their ability to launch
these attacks. It's easy. These pirates operate off “motherships”
boats that launch small boats. ID the motherships – then sink them.
That hulu link I put in
there... this Dr. Danger guy... what a douchebag. He's purpose
is only self agrandizing and his comments show a complete lack of
respect to the people he's talking to. What a clown. It's remarkable
that he didn't get lit up. He talks about these guys as being some
of the best gunfighters in the world and totally glossed over the
whole Blackhawk Down event. Our men took on substantially greater
numbers and came out on top. We lost 31 men, and had a lot of
wounded, yes. But we slaughtered those best gunfighters in the world
by the truckload. I had a good laugh when this guy started in on the
warlord guy for putting too much wasted space in the camera shot..
Dude – stfu and crop the image when you get home.
I've been having a very
good time lately with an old rifle. My old Remington 514 .22.
This is a single shot bolt action with a trigger pull like an 1800's
era light switch. But I love shooting it. This was the first firearm
I ever fired... not one like this one... this one. A family heirloom
that my own boys have learned shooting with. I need to take them out
more with it. And I will tomorrow. But in the mean time, I've found
I had a brick of .22 CB Short. Firing them through this 514, you
have the report of about half of a pellet rifle, with about the same
speed... and hitting with a much heavier projectile. I used it today
to cleanly take a sparrow off of a tree branch. This was used to
feed one of Ogre Ranch's cats. I had fun doing it and the cat had a
tasty meal. The simple pleasure of a low power rimfire is a treat.
I've posted about this several years ago and it's still true today.
Just for having some simple fun... a .22 is hard to beat. And these
.22 Shorts – you don't need ear plugs. The neighbors don't call SWAT
out on you... you can just enjoy the moment. You know what? I've
never put this rifle on paper. Hmmm. Looks like I've a mission for
tomorrow.
I look my boys fishing
today. We were trying for Tiger Muskies. We got skunked. When we
first pulled into the view of Cottonwood, we saw a Muskie snatch a
heron right off the water and pull it down fighting. It was awesome.
But evidently now that it had been feed it had no interest in the
lures we were offering it.
04-11-09: The Heritage Foundation
is a fantastic Conservative Thinktank resource for anyone on
this side of the political spectrum, or for those who just want to
cut through the Media BS and get real. Bush has been beaten up by
both sides, for a lot of good reasons, but the economy should not be
one of them. Bush was leading a surging economy with consistent
growth of 5 to 6% a year. Unemployment was at record lows. That's a
good economy. It might not be perfect, but that's a good economy.
And then the Dems won the House and Senate.... and everything went
to total shit. The Housing Market crumbled, bringing down the Credit
market and the banking industry is still shattering. So what is our
new President doing about this?
Spending money that hasn't even been made yet, putting us into debt
that has been completely unimaginable in the past. This is is
just peachy. This is the result of electing people who have not even
the slightest idea of how the economy works... and putting them in
charge of everything. Right now, the White House is drunk with our
money and pretty much reflects the Animal House drunk with cheap
beer.
So the pirates, having
been completely intimidated by our Jimmy Carter approach to
kidnapping people or taking Americans as hostages... has taken
another ship. You don't negotiate with Evil. When you make a
compromise with Evil – Evil has won. Shoot the fuckers! You shoot
them every time they pop up – you shoot them until these pirates
stop popping up. You see a little speed boat racing in your
direction – you don't open up a dialog with them. You open a can of
whoop-ass.
Muzzle Loading rifles
have been big and getting bigger these days. Don't be shocked,
it's not all about AR-15's. But what is interesting is the optics
going on them. Today I mounted and bore sighted a Bushnell Holosight
and a Vortex Strikefire on muzzle loaders. Does a single shot need a
holosight? Can it benefit? Yes. Yes, it can. A great red dot type
optic can enhance any gun with short to intermediate range guns.
Rifles, Shotguns, SMG's, Muzzle Loaders, hell... even pellet guns.
Speaking of airguns...
one of my younger boys had a birthday. He got the BUCK rifle, the
same thing as a Red Ryder, but without the wood forend and a fiber
optic front sight. He got a 6000 round can of BB's to go with it.
After I came home from work tonight, we did a little shooting
together with his little BB gun. How delightful! It's easy to forget
the simple joys of a simple BB gun.
04-10-09: You guys have seen these
TeaParty gatherings around the country. Ours is coming up
next Wednesday and they asked me to speak. Er... I'm okay at the
writing part... not so great at the public speaking... but I think
I'm going to give it a shot. Why not? My only worry is getting
carried away and saying things that should best not be said out loud
in public. I don't know what I'm going to say right now... but I'm
going to try to come up with something good. And then I'm going to
image that everyone there is naked. But then again, I do that
anyways, even if I'm not talking. (insert naughty purring sound
here)
These pirates that have our ship's captain – I'm afraid
that my response would be a bit heavy handed and would require the
sacrifice of the captain. I would riddle that little pirate dingy
with automatic fire from the ships Gatling Gun. I would shred those
bastards completely. The purpose is to send a very clear message
to the pirates. Don't Mess With The US. Kill them, kill every other
pirate vessel that's afloat... and bring them before God's Mercy.
Because they wouldn't have mine. This captain made a heroic gesture
in trading himself for his crew. That is admirable and I'd give him
the greatest honor possible and a nice “with regrets” message to his
family... with a stipend of course. But I'd kill everyone of those
pirates, without hesitation. The next Destroyer build would bear
this captain's name. We do not negotiate with terrorists, we do not
make deals with Pirates. Doing so only encourages more piracy and
terrorism. Sacrifices must be made, but Americans need to fight tot
he last man. God be with Captain Phillips.
Too many hits! I
checked my page views with a 3rd party traffic meter –
and my 40,000 hits a month is long gone. It said my hits are 380,000
a month. WTF!?! This freaks me the hell out. I try not to think
about it. Normally I don't check these things... normally I don't
care. But sometimes the curiosity gets the best of me and I peek. I
dont advise peeking to other bloggers. Blog like no one else reads
your stuff... just let it flow. When you look into the abyss... you
stop blogging like you normally would. Which means you stop doing
what is gathering your readership in the first place. For example,
I'm completely unsettled and now I don't want to talk about the rise
and fall of the western roman empire like I was going to... so you
are just going to have to miss out on that now.
Okay, some of you may
have noticed the little link up above to
WeaponFlix.com... Well, WeTheArmed.com is forming an
arrangement with WF. This mutually beneficial arrangement should
boost traffic through both sites. This benefits them the most right
now, but gives us a great resource for gun related vids. The upshot
is that uploading to WF seems to be faster than to YouTube. So right
now, I'm going to be uploading my vids to both sites. I've a good
number on Youtube now and a good number of subscribers... but I'm
going to load the same vids to WF going forward. I might take and
upload videos of portions of my training classes... maybe. I'm
thinking about it.
04-09-09: I was spending a little
time with one of my boys when he said that he wanted to join the
Army. It felt like icewater suddenly started pumping through my
heart. He then said he wanted to be a sharpshooter. “A professional
shooter, like you.” This is one of those strange moments that pop up
and catch you right between the eyes all unexpectedly. On one hand,
you feel the pride of your son's patriotism, and his love because he
“wants to be like you”... but then you feel that chill... knowing
what such a life would bring and the risks involved. The ethical and
emotional trauma that could be faced. If I could pick a career for
this lad, it wouldn't be in Combat Arms. I'll support him in
whatever choice he makes – I'll have his back. But I'd rather see
him get into another line of work.
Castro wants to help?
That's very kind of the old man. If Castro really wanted to help,
he'd release all his political prisoners, denounce communism, and
open real dialog with the US again, and invite all the exiled Cubans
back home so they could hold a real democratic election. That would
be helpful.
Yesterday Ben and I went
to do some long range shooting.
I have a thread over on WTA about this, including videos of the day.
I was shooting the HS against the XCR and the results were
interesting. The guns are tied. I really liked the trigger pull and
the thumbhole stock on the HS better... but the XCR kept up. The XCR
bucked more because it was a little lighter, but the biggest thing
about the XCR is that it's 1/3 the price. While I like the HS a lot,
the XCR is smoother in the action and I can fire it, cycle the
action, and fire it again easier without pulling my eye out of the
scope. Other than cosmetics, the biggest functional difference
between the two rifles were the optics. The HS, topped with a
Leupold is going with the traditional “Tactical Scope” way of doing
things, with the big turrets and the counting of clicks... pretty
standard fare. The PFI's rapid reticle is different. I like it so
much, I could easily put it on every rifle I own... but PFI's
offerings are limited. Zeiss uses the system and puts in packages
that work in all applications.... including higher magnum and
magnification applications.
Now, I don't seem to be a
pig... but I've noticed a lot of stories in the news about the
increasing size of women's breasts, and that women are getting
implants more often these days. Of course most of these new stories
are coming from the UK and NZ, but still. Boobies are getting
bigger. Let me think about this for a second. AWESOME.
Galactica: I'm
officially saddened that this show is now over. But I look forward
to getting the entire series on DVD. The final episode was a bit
controversial, but I have to say that I liked it. The Galactica
jumping right up next to the cyclon colony ship – that was epic.
Galactic had the best space battles, and this one was the best since
the last episode with the Pegasus. That was amazing... I was wishing
for more information about Starbuck's character and state of
being... but it was cool how that wrapped up. And Caprica Six as an
Eternal Being? Well... I thought she was a Goddess the first time I
saw her!
Nine Inch Nails and
Jane's Addiction have released a new album –
for free to download. Check them out.
04-05-09: We need to hit the
Cartels head on. The Mexican Mafia and Colombian Cartels have
been pushing into the US as hard and fast as they can. We need to
push back. Cartel growing operations are making people fearful of
going into National Parks and Forests for fear of stumbling into
these criminals... fearful for good reasons. We should put together
battalions of volunteer citizens, armed with weapons and radios, to
sweep these areas and clear these cartels out of the US and off our
soil. That's what it is going to take. A couple arrests and an
occasion police fly over isn't going to do it. The scale is too
large. We need a massive eradication operation... Systematic,
coordinated, and motivated. That's what it is going to take. If we
don't do this... we will not get rid of the problem... and the
problem is going to grow exponentially and reach every corner of the
US.
A new source for
ammunition. Ammo has become a problem to acquire because of the
Obama Effect on the Gun Industry. The normal sources have been slow
to fill orders and are backlogged deeply. Well, we have a new source
now. USA
AMMO. These guys are rolling new rounds on new brass. This is a
new company, so let's show them some support and when you do – tell
them The Ogre sent you.
Yesterday I got an email
about a new site called “WeaponFlix”
and was going to post it on WTA, but someone beat me to it. The
site is new and a bit rough. Buffering and playback issues, and of
course limited content, but it should become a good source in the
future. Bookmark it and check up on it from time to time.
I am more than miffed
that we allowed North Korea to launch a ballistic missile. I
understand we most likely allowed the launch to see what North
Korea's capabilities are. But I'm still not happy about Kim Jong Ill
having a weapon that can hit Japan. That's not cool. We should have
been in a position to have shot it down instantly. Maybe we were.
But I'm uncomfortable with this. We should have had agents and
assets in place to have caused the missile to explode on the launch
pad, destroying as much of their tech and technicians as possible.
Make it look like an accident. That's what we should have
done. If I was the Emperor of America - that's what would have
happened.
04-04-09: May 9th
I'm putting on 2 training courses. My Carbine 1 Course from 9AM
to 2PM. And my Basic Pistol course from 3PM to 6PM. I need attendees
to prepay/register for the courses so I know exactly how many
students are attending so I can plan on assistant instructors.
Hopefully the weather will be nice, but don't plan on that. For
details email me or contact me at Basin Sports. 150 to 200 rounds
for rifle. 200 rounds for your handgun. You will need spare mags and
ideally a way to carry the mags. Obviously for the handgun course
you will need a good holster that you can draw and reholster with...
IWB rigs are discouraged for the purpose of this class as they can
collapse and hinder a safe and efficient reholster. You don't need
fancy gear... and uncle mike's cheapo and a fanny pack will work if
that's all you have. We'll discuss “Gear Theory” at the class.
Ben and I took a
lunchbreak together and ran out to one of our shooting spots.
The guns exercised today were .45 handguns... Ben broke out his Dan
Wesson Bobtail Commander, and I rolled with my SIG GSR C3. Both of
these guns are amazing examples of the Commander variation of John
Moses Browning's Masterpiece. There are a lot of handgun designs
that have come out since the 1911, but I really can't say any of
them are better. I am quite fond of a lot of them... but I always
come back to the 1911.
Now, my SIG C3 is still
wearing in... and I had cleaned it with Mpro-7 without oiling it...
so I had a couple failures to feed. Once back to the shop, I cleaned
it again and lubed it with Tetra Gun Grease. On the way home I
stopped in a pull-out and blew through a whole box of CCI Blazer
Brass. Not one malfunction. Seriously, the more I shoot the C3 the
better it gets, and the more I like it. The accuracy is astonishing.
Now, you can think of this as an Officer's or as a Commander,
because it is a combination of both. Out at the range with Ben there
was a Hard Hat about 50 yards away, and I was able to repeatedly hit
it off hand. This is something that you just wouldn't be able to do
with an Officer's or a Kimber Ultra.
I've mentioned before how
fond I am becoming of Mpro-7's cleaner. This is still the case. I
love the stuff. Now, this Tetra Gun Grease... When I put it in the
C3 the gun felt different. It felt “creamy”. It felt like the action
was cushioned from shock during cycling. It felt good, but not as
slick as with Tetra Gun Oil. However with the Gun Grease, I had no
Malf's. So that's something to think about. There is the whole
Grease vs Oil debate and I'm not getting into that right now. One
advantage that the Grease has is that it stays put and doesn't bleed
like oil does.
I'm not going to try to say
which Commander is better – the Bobtail or the C3 – they are both
too different. But when it comes to 1911's, I can say that the
Commander is the best balance of power, accuracy, with the easy of
carry and concealment. The Commander Rules.
I watch a couple shows on
Hulu.com when they get updated with new episodes. One of them is
“Legend Of The Seeker”. It's a series based on the Sword of Truth
series by Terry Goodkind. This led me to read “Wizard's First Rule”,
which I borrowed from Ben who was kind enough to lend me his
autographed hardback copy. Well, I've got my own copy and I'm
reading it through again to pick up all the details I missed before.
This is odd because I almost never re-read a book after having so
recently finished it. The only one I've read twice through like this
is MHI. But that's another topic. The book is great, but the series
is pure cheesy camp but I enjoy it
for some reason I can't explain.
