Pacifism is a privilege of the protected.

I'm for McCain, but I don't like it one damn bit.

October 2008

10-31-08:  Scariest thing I could find to post for Halloween: Obama is a religion now. It's official.

If this retarded lady was right, and I didn't have to pay for gas or a mortgage... hell, I'd want to vote for him too.

Okay, no... I still wouldn't. This is reason #8,879 of why Obama scares me. He's Black Jesus.

The second scariest thing is Event Horizon. There is a WTA Thread here.

10-30-08:  Obama is a Socialist: More than anyone else in the USA right now, the Cuban-America community that fled Castro has the clearest perspective regarding Obama and Socialism. Here is what they think about it. These folks saw the political stew brewing, saw the take over, lived through the changes, the disappearances, the arrests in the middle of the night. And they are seeing the same crap with Obama. If you were not worried before, be worried now. Obama is living nightmare for our nation. My sympathies go out to our Cuban friends... living in exile from their country... most have adopted America as their new country and good for them. But there are those that dream of returning home to Cuba. I wish them luck. Cuba is a beautiful little island nation and it deserves better than a communist dictator. We really should have done something about Castro a long time ago.

I would love to go down there with some money and buy up a bunch of those old 1950's cars they have, bring them back and restore them.

Grace Jones can't stand Palin: That sounds like a good endorsement of Palin if you ask me. Who is this freakish woman anyway? She looks like a super-villain nemesis for The Tick. She played the bad Bond chick in the worst of the worst of Roger Moore's abuse of the series... she's like a circus side show. And she can't stand Palin. You know what? That right there is reason enough to vote for McCain/Palin without knowing anything else about them.

I don't disagree with Kim du Toit very often: But I do today. He listed some of is top choices for vehicles and I'm thinking I need to put out a counter point.

The Sports Car. Kim's choice of the Audi R8 is a nice one, but it isn't a sports car. It's a hot performance car to be sure... but it isn't a sports car. Kim's a purist on this sort of thing, something has clouded his judgment. The R8 is best categorized as a Grand Touring (GT) car... but he already has a GT pick in the Jag XKR. Between those two, I'd take the Jag. Now, my pick for the Sports Car would be a 2008 Saturn Sky Redline Edition. It's essentially the same car as the Pontiac Solstice, but better looking and with some improvements. That and the fact that it doesn't say Pontiac on it. I would rather have liked to have been able to pick the Honda S2000, but the little Honda is too expensive, doesn't look quite right, doesn't have enough car in it, and it feels too cramped. I can actually get in a Sky and feel comfortable in it. I like the way it's laid out and it doesn't feel like its trying too hard. The Honda feels like a science experiment conducted on Go-Carts in contrast.

The Pickup Truck: I'm going Chevy with this one. My Father in Law is a Contractor. He goes through trucks a lot... I've learned a lot about trucks from him. He's had a Fords and what not... but he last Ford just didn't last. He's got a couple Chevy's and they are solid. So when I shopped for my truck, I knew I wanted a Chevy. Mine's an older one, and I can contrast it with Clint's new one. At work, we have a new Ford. While Kim doesn't like the new Ford Peterbuilt look, I guess he's only looked at some top end, brass hat editions. The one we have is quite spartan inside. It's nice, comfortable, and quiet inside. But the radio and environmental controls are laid out in a less than intuitive manner. It's also less powerful than the Chevys in the same class. I'll take a Chevy Silverado 1500 4x4 as a basic pickup truck. But saying a Pickup Truck is like saying “Rifle” and there are a number us classes in this category.

Small SUV: Volkswagen Tiguan. Mid Size SUV: Jeep Grand Cherokee.

Full Size SUV, Kim dismissed because of his City Boy perspective. If you have to move people and gear, you need a full sized SUV and nothing else out there can do it like the Chevy Tahoe. It's big, powerful... and it's comfortable. It can haul, tow, and do so with style. My beloved Sister In Law has one... and it is terrific. It just is. Now, I also like the Ford Expedition a lot, but the Tahoe just has everything you want. Jack Bauer drives a Tahoe. What better endorsement do you need?

Large Saloon: Kim says None. I say Caddy CTS-V.

City Car? A Smart FourTwo? A couple idiots around here has a couple of those things. They look retarded. They are too damn small for anything other than running one or two Metrosexuals around as long as only one of them is packing a brief case. My choice of City Car is the Full Sized Ford Brono, with the top off. You have a crazy tight turning radius and you have a commanding view of the area as you are able to look over the tops of these metropolitan, latte sipping, urban sophisticates. I'll take my truck and Brooks and Dunn over any Smart Car and Brooks Brothers. I say fuck the city.

10-29-08:  More on Cooper Arms: So USA Today writes a story about Cooper Arms and the President Dan Cooper's donations to Obama. On Cooper's web site he counters that he once made a donation to Obama in an effort to counter Hillary. That's not true. Not only that, but he has not made a single donation to McCain/Palin. Cooper arms is not our friend, and they will not be getting our business. Not until Dan Cooper is removed from the company. The board has asked him to leave, which is a good move. But asking him to leave and him actually being gone is two different things. I want his before and after pictures of his office... I want to see it cleared out. I want to see Dan kicked in the balls by the chairman of the board and that video put on YouTube. Dan has stabbed all of us in the back, and then blew us off with some lame reason that not only makes no sense, but was untrue. Backstabbing bastard... Die in a fire, and then say hello to Bill Ruger for me.

As I mentioned before... I am doing fine after the surgery. Thank you for the support and well wishes. I was in and out in an unbelievable amount of time... it was so fast. Done. They wheeled me into the OR, transferred me to operating table... Steve said “okay, lay your head down on this pillow”... seriously, that's it. I woke up with a nurse asking me how I was feeling and offering me juice. It was like, two seconds. My leg is giving me ZERO pain now. None. First time since when... April? I don't remember. All I know is that I have no pain. Sure, tomorrow and the next is going to suck... but then it starts getting better again. The 3rd day is the hardest... but getting this done now... so worth it.

10-28-08:  I voted early. With the election so close, and me going under the knife tomorrow... I made sure I voted. I don't know if I would have been able to bounce back in time to go do it on election day. This is what the early vote is for. I voted a straight Republican Ticket, which is the first time in my life I've ever done that. Then I voted no on all Constitutional Amendment changes and additions. Jim Matheson has done very well for the state of Utah, and I thank him for his service. Unfortunately do to the balance of power issue, I could not vote for him this time around. Jim, why the hell don't you just go Republican? You don't believe in anything the Democrats stand for anymore... you are not like Harry Reid. You are a decent person. If you were GOP, you would have had my vote again. Oh well. No, maybe not... because I believe Congressmen should have term limits and you've had your share. Time for new blood.

Magpul sent us some need little tactical rail covers. They are two part covers, that snap together like Hot Wheels race tracks. I like them. With all this Magpul stuff, I'm going to have to get another AR just to use all these parts. There is nothing I've played with from Magpul that is not awesome. You can get a lot of tactical accessories from places like TAPCO and CAA... but don't. Get Magpul. And order it from Brownells or FBMG, and tell them I sent you. I'm going to review Magpul gear in the near future... after I heal up a bit.

So how many of you guys been wanting a finely crafted Cooper Rifle? Me, you bet. Would have loved to have owned one. Not so much anymore. Screw Cooper Firearms. Backstabbing sons of bitches, I wouldn't have one if you gave it to me. I'd use the stock in my wood burning stove and I'd use the barreled action for a crow bar... fuck them. Oh, he's made some very fine guns... works of art... but supporting Obama? Traitorous. Guys are calling for a Zumbo treatment on Cooper. Well, Zumbo learned his lesson and has apologized and more over he has gone before Congress to defend our second amendment rights and assault type rifles. Dan Cooper is just backstabbing moron. Fuck'm.

10-27-08:  Cyclops Orion 5 LED light: Sometimes the stupidest little things turn out to be the most useful. I've been a fan of small LED lights for a long time, but this one, is the bees knees... You can clip it to the brim of your hat, and it sits up there, out of the way for hands free work. It's so light, it doesn't weight anything and yet it's bright. Crazy, blind you, kinda bright. This is perfect for lots of reasons. Ever work under a hood after dark? Setting up a camp after dark? Ever do anything that needed two hands after dark? These are awesome and you can pick them up for twenty bucks. 5 bucks less you can get a 3 LED unit, but I like the 5 LED version. I love this thing. I wish I had one of these decades ago. I'm going to get a few more of these... they are just so handy.

Speaking knees: I'm going under the knife on Wednesday. I got knee imaged today. The girls doing it said things like “OMG!” and “How are you walking?” I told them that I've got a high tolerance for pain and I say a chant in my head. “What do you chant?”

I recite the Litany against fear.”

What's that?”

I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer. Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration. I will face my fear. I will permit it to pass over me and through me. And when it is gone past, I will turn the inner eye to see its path. Where the fear has gone, there will be nothing. Only I will remain.”

That's COOL! Where did that come from?”

The Bene Gesserits.”

Evidently the knee is pretty messed up. Instead of scheduling me out 2, 3, or 4 weeks like my last Doc – he bumped someone else off something else and put me up as soon as possible. So, yes... I've been really fucked up for a long time now, and it's been getting worse. I think the best pain I had was when the Doc grabbed my leg and started pulling, twisting, and pressing into the leg. “Does this hurt?”

AAAARRRRGGGGHHH!!!!!”

So you don't want me to do that again, I take it.”

I'd rather be water-boarded at Gitmo.”

10-26-08:  21 Reasons Why  Sarah Palin Should NOT be Elected Vice-President of the United  States:
1) She is a  Woman.
2) She does not believe in killing babies, born or unborn.
3) She is NOT endorsed by Susan Sarandon, Jane Fonda,  Rosie O'Donnell, Hillary Clinton, Nancy Pelosi, Geraldine Ferraro, Barbara  Walters, Helen Thomas, Ellen DeGeneris, Ted Kennedy, Keith Olberman, Chris  Matthews, Barbra Streisand or David Letterman.
4) She is married to a Foreigner - a species called  'Native American' - meaning her five children are half-breeds.
5) She has on more than one occasion expressed PRIDE in  the United States of America.
6) Unlike decent, self-respecting Democrats everywhere,  she has a 17-year-old daughter who became pregnant out of wedlock.
7) She is a member of the National Rifle Association  ... actually owns firearms .. and knows how to use them.
8) She has killed a moose, among other animals - and  spreads the propaganda that it is hunters, through their license fees,  that keep American wildlife from becoming extinct.
9) She often does her own grocery and other household  shopping.
10) She drives a car, and flies a plane.
11) She chose to give birth to a "special needs" child, rather than  allow a skilled Abortionist to kill it for her.
12) She refuses to apologize for seeking the termination of an  Alaskan State Trooper just because he applied a taser to his  12-year-old stepson (who, of course, happened to be Gov. Palin's nephew).
13) She is inexperienced.  And she refuses to admit that her  duties as the chief executive in the State of Alaska are nowhere near  equal to those of a public servant who was once a Community Organizer, or  that of a United States Senator who has carried the awesome burden of  overseeing a staff of political appointees.
14) She has a son who is in the U.S. Military, deployed to the  Persian Gulf - probably making her prejudiced against all the peaceful  Muslims in that part of the world.
15) She is on Oprah Winfrey's 'Do Not Invite' list.
16) She professes to be a Christian, but has no 'Spiritual  Adviser' - even though Rev. Jeremiah Wright, who served Sen. Obama in that  capacity for 20 years, is now available.
17) She isn't really a 'beauty queen,' as advertised. She was  only the runner-up in the Miss Alaska Contest; and Alaska is not a very  populous state, anyway.
18) The Obama-Biden ticket is favored over McCain-Palin, 80% to  20%, by our friendly allies in France.
19) Her children are not properly trained in hygiene.  (Did  you see her 7-year-old daughter shamelessly lick the entire palm of her  hand at the Convention, then use it to slick down the hair of her little  brother?)
20) She is of mixed English, German, and Irish ancestry - and you  KNOW you can't trust the Limey's, Krauts, or Micks.
21) Back to No.  1:  This is the one that really galls modern, liberal 'feminists.'  Gov. Palin is a Woman, a female-type wife and mother, who shaves her legs,  wears makeup, dresses smartly, often cooks meals for her family, doesn't  give a hoot about the National Organization for Women or the all-powerful  Teachers Unions - and obviously will never, ever fit in as a member of the Washington Elite.
Do we want a person like  this to be the Vice President of the Unites States?
You bet we  do!!!

10-24-08:  Today was a tough day at work... spent all day at the range with a new SABRE DEFENCE rifle. Their Varmint Rifle was fantastic. Trigger was amazing, and better than expected as it almost always broke just before you expected it to... very crisp. Accuracy was exceptional, even with cheap 55 grain Ultramax Softpoints. If we had better ammo, we'd have had even better results. But I did smoke a prairie dog at about 350 yards with it. Incredible rifle. Solid, no rattle, and best yet, when you shoot... none of that “Sproing” sound from the buffer tube. This very well could be the very best varminting AR I've ever shot. I don't say that lightly because I've shot a lot of them and the bar is quite high with S&W Performance Center target rifles, and heavy barreled Rock River's setting the standards. Yeah, I'm going to say it... the Sabre was better. Okay, so we busted about 300 rounds of 223 through the Sabre... spent all morning at the range. Yeah, my job was just full of suck today. Then for some reason, I caught a cold and my nose was running and eyes watering... I had to go home. I feel like crap now. Oh well. At least I got to play with a new Sabre. Sabre Defence is my favorite AR maker  I'll put a Sabre up against ANY other AR, production or custom.

10-23-08:  Desert Patrol near Lapoint Utah: This is my backyard. The dogs loved it too.

Brownells is just about the most impressive online source for serious gunners out there. They are now offering something for free that I'm sure a lot of people would have been willing to pay for. Check this out. That is fantastic. Now, remember, when you buy something from them, I get 5%, and that money goes to support MadOgre.com and WeTheArmed.com. But my hosting bill is coming up again, so... Well, There you go. Click through my link, and buy what you were going to buy anyways and it doesn't cost you anything. We both win. But what they are giving away right now... that's pretty cool. How to videos, PDF files... to show and tell you how to build your AR from the ground up. Now, what I don't want to see, is a bunch of brand new gun makers wanting to be included on my list just because you watched some videos and learned how to assemble parts. Don't think you can just jump into the AR Building business. But I tell you what, if you are serious, you can build an example gun for me, ship it to me, and if it can shoot Sub-MOA groups without jamming – I'll list you. Understand of course, that the rifle would no be returned. Ahem. Permanent Loan. Sounds like a lot, but we gotta separate the Wheat from the Chaff.

Burning Coal. I lit up the coal last night at about 9PM, and right now it is 9:30AM. One of the clumps of coal is still burning, the wood burning stove is still hot, and heat waves are still coming off it. I didn't think Coal was this good. The house is still warm, from a coal fire I lit last night. I'm amazed. I just gotta find a source of it closer than Price.

Obama isn't a US Citizen. Curmudgeonly has a good report on this. The courts should throw out Obama's Candidacy and end this BS. Read up.

10-22-08:  Ogre Ranch is Coal Fired tonight.  It's cold outside, but inside, the whole place is nice and warm... because of 4 chunks of coal, each about the size of a honeydew melon. The cost is about the same as wood, but the coal is much more efficient, hotter, and burns longer. Last winter we used about 4 cords of wood, which would equate to about, 2.5 to 3 tons of coal... I think... I don't know for sure... but I can tell ya.. I'm liking it. The downside to coal is that to get it, I have to go get it in my truck with a trailer... from the coal mine in Price. You probably remember the news reports about the coal mine collapse and the 6 miners that were trapped in it. Yeah, I think that's the mine. That's about 4 hours of driving, and the return trip would be done fully loaded in a truck that is untested. It drives great so far, it's set up for towing, but I've not towed so much as a Golf Cart behind it yet. So maxing it out the first time, gives me some concern. But I'm thinking it would be well worth it. This coal burns nice... clean... long lasting... the efficiency is impressive. I'm going to have to go get some.

Why I'm voting for McCain

Stunning.   Obama, has nothing on this man.  Nothing.

Oh Hell YEAH! The Gundoctor is a friggen ARTIST! Remember how I said that I left my SIG 556 with Joe at FBMG for a Duracoat Camo job? Well he did it, and he posted some pictures of his work. Yeah, that's my SIG. Oh man... that thing is sexy. I love it.

The Democrats have truly become disturbing. Their biggest threat right now is a plumber named Joe. They have made statements regarding their investigation of the man. The DNC is Investigating a private citizen. For what? Stealing DNC documents? Clogging their toilets? No... just for simply asking a question that they didn't want asked. And Obama, who could have answered it in some other way – told the truth and said that he's going to take Joe's money and spread the wealth. For that, Joe is under investigation by the DNC, as they themselves have said. What gives the DNC the right to investigate anyone? This is scary stuff, brothers and sisters... truly disturbing. Joe Biden said that Obama will be tested with a crisis, and his first crisis is a plumber trying reach the American Dream. The only thing scarier than that, is that there are so many people out there willing to vote for this Con Man.

Sarah Palin says some things that I wanted to say... so I'll let her do my talking.

$250 Thousand Dollars A Year. I don't know about you guys, but I'm hearing the likes of Rush and Hannity say how hard it is on 250 grand a year. You know what, Rush? Every one of my problems that I'm having in life could be happily resolved with 250 grand period, not just every year... and I'd have money to spare. Make that an annual salary, and I'd be living like a freaking KING out here. Don't tell me that 250 Large is a small amount of money. That's a huge stash of cash. That would pay off Ogre Ranch, add a couple rooms, rebuild the shop, buy my wife a new Expedition for the family, and pay our energy bills for the year. I'd kill for a quarter of a million a year. You bet... I'd club baby harp seals with an axe handle for a quarter mil. So don't tell me from the comfort of the Golden EIB Mic that 250 G's is not a lot of money. If 250 Grand isn't much – give it to me, and let me see just how far I couldn't get it to stretch. I guarantee I could get a lot more miles out of it than you could. I'm freaking tickled when I find a spare twenty dollar bill in my jacket. Then again, I'm not flying back and forth from New York to Florida all the time on my private jet... I'm not saying that doing so is wrong or that you shouldn't do it. I'm just saying that its a matter of perspective. If you are paid hundreds of millions... 250 grand is nothing. If your paid a fraction of that, it's everything. This isn't class envy. I don't want your money. I don't want your lifestyle. I don't want your hand of problems and issues you have to deal with. I'm comfortable with my own set, my own money, and my own problems. I don't want a jet, or two houses on either side of a coast. I just want to take care of my home and my family... If I have more money than I need for that purpose, I spend it on Guns and Religion. I don't need the Democrats telling me they want to help me and I don't need the Republicans saying that either. I want to be left alone. I want the government to stay away from me and my family. If I need something I'll ask for it, just don't get your feeling hurt if I don't ask you.

10-17-08:  Apologies to the Diamond Mountain Rustlers: Let me back this post up a bit and explain. During the lunch break, Ben and I ran out to the range to rezero Steve's Scout Scope, which I put back on, and zero the Elite which I put onto the Marlin. Now today was also a huge Cowboy Action Shooting day. So after we blew through a couple hundred rounds of .22, we drove through the parking lot of the CASS shoot, checking out all the activity. We both agree we would be well into shooting Cowboy Action if it wasn't for the Dress Up. A couple of the ladies there were wearing bright pink costumes in the pattern of what you would expect an 1880's prostitute to wear. We pondered why these ladies would want to look like hookers, and how the Good Hearted Hooker is a classic Western Stereotype... we were pondering this as we drove back out the gate. Now the gates were wide open... and on the gate is a sign that says “Diamond Mountain Rustlers” The sign is quite wide, and it's split so half the sign is on one gate and other half is on the other... so one side says “DIAMOND MOUN”... And the other side – on my side of the truck as we drove out, read “TAIN RUSLERS” Or, as I read it aloud, “TAINT RUSTLERS”. Never before have either Ben or myself ever read an entire nasty, sticky, and sweaty epic western novel written in only two words.

These numbers grow every day. Every day, the hits about doubled. Overall, that might not seem like a lot compared to the big forums out there... but we are a form comprised primarily of members of The Horde and the Minions of FBMG, and some refugees of the THR Drama... This just blew me away. I knew that a combined forum of FBMG and MadOgre would do well, and better than both could do alone... but this is like liquid Hydrogen and liquid Oxygen working together in combination here. Rocket fuel. We The Armed is going to be huge. The members have already named themselves. They are just as proud as I am. This is a good sign... a real community with a sense of identity. I am gobsmacked. The discussions have been lively, the sense of community is there and we've not had to actually moderate anything other than a couple threads to the proper places.

Interesting videos of the two candidates at public speaking. Interesting contrast.

Very Early:  Coyote Dreams: I kept dreaming about coyotes. Like I was chased or hunting them, I can't remember... but I was dreaming about coyotes. Then I woke up and I could hear coyote howls and yips here at Ogre Ranch. I wasn't dreaming this. So I pulled on my jeans, slipped on my shoes, slid my camo jacket it and grabbed the best weapon for low profile tasks that I have. A Marlin model 60 loaded with 14 rounds of 60 grain Aquilas. Bright moon, bright stars, you could see everything... at 4:30AM. What I could not see are my dogs, Raven and Kenyan. Raven is our wolf, and Kenyan is our stupid and homosexual retriever. He's dumb as a sack of hammers, but has wonderful fashion sense. Gone. Can't find them. They are probably out playing around like they tend to do, and in this case, leaving Ogre Ranch unprotected. I look out into the fields, and I see some eyeshine. So lay the rifle over the hood of my truck, and scope it out. It's a coyote, plain as day, eyeballing me. Lights out Mr. Yote. I held just over the top of his head at about 150 yards and the 60 grain bullets smacks that yote right below the one of his eyes. Done. Another coyote that I hadn't seen right by my shop, takes off running... full tilt... I let go 3 shots that are misses and the 4th nailed it. I heard the smack, and the coyote yelped, but didn't stop. It keeps running, but not as good. This is where the dogs from the next place over come in... 3 dogs must have been itching to go after the coyotes because all the sudden they go and just tear the life out of that thing. I stood there and watched for a few minutes... it was crazy. Ripped it to pieces... it was a horror show. Then they go trotting off, looking smug as hell, leaving their work as a warning to other coyotes in the area. All quite again, I go back inside, when all the sudden I can hear my dogs barking. There they are. Barking at the dead coyotes. As if saying “Yeah, we showed you.” They had been hiding in the garage. I can't blame them for being scared. Coyotes have a history of killing domestic dogs, even the toughest ones. Because domestic dogs don't KILL for survival on a daily basis like coyotes. I can still hear yips from other coyotes, but they are not in my area, so I can't go get them. Oh well. Ogre Ranch is secure.

But now I can't go back to sleep. Living in rural Utah. Gotta love it.

10-16-08:  PFI Optics: I am, not the store I work at – me... I am a dealer for Pride and Fowler Inc optics. PFI scopes have impressed the heck out of me and I am totally in love with the RR800-1 that I have on my .308 XCR Tactical. If you want a PFI scope, shoot me an email. Once you use the PFI Rapid Reticle, you wont want to go back to anything else.

I got my truck: The Silver Chevy. It drives great.

Email from one of The Horde: Ogre, You bastard! First you talked up how good the CZ 527 is, so I trade in my kimber .308 to get it. Then my wife takes it over!!! I have not gotten a dear in the past 3 seasons. This is her first, she walks out on the back porch with the CZ and bags a 2 point. One shot kill, the buck was knocked down by the winchester 120 grain soft point, ran ~50 yards and it was all over. The bullet did not exit the body, but tore both lungs into hamburger (She just missed the heart by inches, but this is her first hunt). Where is the justice in this? The only bright lining to this cloud is that my Mauser in .243 just got back from Skaggs so at least I will have a small bore rifle of my own, since the 527 is now the "girl gun." Vernon

Vernan, dude... it's not my fault. You wife just has excellent taste. What can I say? So she bagged her buck and filled her tag off your back porch? Awesome. How would that be? I don't know if I would have traded a Kimber .308 for the 527... but hey... it is a much more enjoyable little carbine. Now check this out... CZ is going to be making that 527 in 6.5 Grendel pretty soon. When that comes out – That one is yours! You tell her I said that.

Mrs. Ogre just gave me a stern lecture. She is adamant that I run for public office. She said that the parties such as the Libertarians and the Constitution Parties are being left in the dust because they don't have a proper candidate that is able to debate, who is able to talk to Democrats and Republicans. She says that I can. Which is true, when I have to... I can talk to Democrats. I've thought about running... and I might eventually. Hell, I don't even know where to start on that.

10-15-08:  Email came in today: You're lucky you are in Utah. Pat” (Who also send some other information regarding how stupid Liberals in the big cities can be.)

Amen to that. You bet I'm glad to be in Utah. This morning I went shooting with some buddies, customers from The Gun Counter at work... nailed a 1 inch orange sticky dot at 620 yards - Off Hand. Won $40. Then I took my younger kids to a Corn Maze. I ate a Carmel Apple and drank some Watermelon smoothie made by a drastically cute and perky (capital P) girl that looked like the blond from Beverly Hillbillies. Gassed up the car on the way home... Sheriff was there at the time. He gave me a nod of approval about the 1911 on my hip, carried openly. As I pulled through my little town were everyone knows everyone, I got waves and smiles from about a half dozen folk... I returned them... Wife teaches their kids at school. But check this out... This morning there was a message on my Shout Box on MadOgre.com. It said from "Guest”, "Your a fucking redneck!!" I'm thinking... Thank God.

a dayy, at various ranges. I really really need to get back into doing my own reloading. I am neck deep in spend brass.

10-14-08:  WeTheArmed.com. The Forum at MadOgre.com has been fun, but the forum software has been irritating. The Lefora crew has been working hard at upgrading, and that's been great... but the software has been lacking in some control features and other things. It's too simple and limiting. Throw in on top the FUBAR situation at TheHighRoad.org and the very low road that it's taken... It was decided that MadOgre.com and FBMG, Inc should combine forces and forums so we can create better online community that goes beyond a mere discussion forum so we can argue about .30-06 vs .270 and 9mm vs .45... But specifically a place were we can help each other improve ourselves, as shooters, as defenders... to get prepared... to have what we need, when we need it and that we know what to do when the chips are down. We are combining the Hunting Community with the Tactical Community.... because... come on... we all love the smell of Hoppes #9. Am I right? We are looking at importing existing forum posts and rolling them in to the new digs, but until then, please use the new forum. The old forums will be closing soon. We've recreated all our favorite topic areas so The Horde and The FBMG Crew can feel at home. Please note: WeTheArmed.com is still under construction. So mind the dust.

Insanity:

10-12-08:   I just finished putting together the training programs for handguns and rifles. This is going to be interesting. Classes will be held a couple Saturdays a month, and a couple Wednesdays for those that can't make it to the weekend courses. We have large 360 degree shooting bays, 100 yard ranges, and extended long range facilities at our disposal and we are going to make use of them. These courses are mostly going to be short one day courses, with the basic classes only 4 hours long. I have to admit, I'm nervous. It's been awhile since I taught formal classes.  Perhaps just for fun we'll do defensive archery and pikes too.

Sunday Shooting: Normally I don't shoot... much... on Sunday. It's just bad Karma. Well, I had to. I had to get away from Ogre Ranch and all the problems and issues... yada yada yada... I had to get out. I brought only my fun guns with me. Check this out. Shooting was great, but cut shorter than I would have liked because we had a cold front come in. The temperature dropped a good 20 degrees. Went from Tshirt to Coat and Gloves within a few minutes.  Winter is climbing all over us already. Last year, it didn't snow until November 20th I think it was... well, there were flakes today. Damn it, I hate winter.

The Elite 3200 scope on the Ruger really helped a lot. It seems to like CCI Blazer ammunition the best and turned in several ¼ inch groups. Quite fun. 200 yard double taps on steel targets are a hell of a lot of fun.

10-11-08:  Chevy Silverado 2500 4x4: Low miles, new tires and stuff... Silver color, good lift, Rhino'd bed, great interior, extended cab. I gotta get this truck... It's too good to let slip. I need 3 grand like ASAP. I need someone to buy my Contour. Does anyone know anyone out there that needs a small, fast, economical car? I'll throw in – and this pains the shit out of me – the Valentine One. Seriously, this truck is awesome.

Zombies are real, and they are voting democrat. Spooky stuff.

Speaking of Zombies... I was studying cases of vanishing communities. Virginia had one of the first recorded in the USA, Roanoke Colony. The whole colony just vanished. Then there is the Anasazi. We have ruins... we have no people. In Alaska, there was one much more recently, where everyone just up and vanished, including the dead from the graves. Indian tribes vanished, whole villages. One explanation is of course Zombie outbreaks. This of course also explains the massive numbers of Democrat Voters in areas that had few registered. I think this is all tied together some how... and I think it's Nancy Pelosi. She's a litch.

Actually I am going to spin this into my book, Silvershot. How communities just have everyone disappear... Zombie Outbreaks spurred on and controlled by Skinwalkers. Silvershot has a new BadGuy... and it's actually a BadGal. She just needs a suitably evil name... and the author of MHI is helping me out here on this one. Whatever her name is... the Indian Name she has is going to have the meaning of “Plague of Crows”.

10-09-08:  I need a new video camera: I need this. If anyone has a spare 1489.44 laying around, or a digital video camera with a built in hard drive, like this one... That would be super swell. I was talking with a local writer here in Vernal, and we want to take a small work and do it as a serial, on “film”. We also want to do some other things... for example do a Top Gear type thing with guns. I have the guys on board who would be a part of this... but the camera I have just doesn't do it. Its fine for some things... but not up to what I want to do. This one is. I need this one. Seriously bad. Unfortunately I am broke like you wouldn't believe. I could really use a hand getting this camera.

An Open Letter to All Gun Manufacturers: We are sick of the .22 Hornet. Not all of us are reloaders, and commercial .22 Hornet ammunition is expensive. Stop shoving the .22 Hornet down our throats. Yes, its a nifty cartridge, and a lot of fun – and back in the day we all had wonderfully full and colorful summers with Pa's Hornet carbine and a pocket full of shells. But these days, at $45.00 a box, no one is shooting it a lot unless they are reloading it. In the same guns you are chambering for .22 Hornet, you could be chambering them for 5.7x28mm. This gives you the same happy fun joy, using premium ballistic tipped bullets, for the same price a box as cheap .223 FMJ loads. This means we shooters can enjoy your product a lot more, for a lot less... which means we will be buying more of your product chambered for these instead of your .22 Hornet versions. Magnum Research's BFR in .22 Hornet would sell more if it was in 5.7x28mm. The CZ 527 in .22 Hornet would be more enjoyable in 5.7x28mm. Anything you are chambering a Hornet for, or a Fireball round for... do it in 5.7x28mm instead. Please. It's just about the most dandy of cartridges out there that I care to buy myself, and I know a lot of guys out there that feel the same way. Forget the Hornet and embrace the 5.7x28mm. Thank you.

Pride and Fowler, the makers of my favorite little scope for my .308, has decided to get into the business of good binoculars. For those that know binos, imagine a pair of Nikon Monarch 10x42's... but with the optical quality that is on par or slightly better than the Vortex Viper 10x42, Burris Signature series... all those at that price level. Small, light, very very good glass. I love this unit I was sent to examine. Unfortunately this one has to go back to PFI. DAMNIT. Guys, you are going to want one of these binos. Fantastic. Seriously, I was ready to pull my Leupolds off my bino harness and attach these. Love them!

I took them out the to range with me today to use while I was shooting Steve's little .22. I could easily see the little .22 hits from the 100 yard bench. I've tried 3 different loads in that little rifle and I can be honest in saying that this gun shoots great, but I've not yet found a load that stands out as a favorite. I had one shot group that went under a quarter inch, but that was a fluke and it wasn't consistently doing that. I need some better grade ammo rather than bulk stuff that's been in my trunk for 2 years. Rimfires are just too much fun.

Big News for the Ogre Nation community coming up. Change is coming... bigger... better... I think you guy are going to like it. But right now my lips are sealed. Only 3 or 4 other guys know about this and they are on board. They are not talking either. Not yet anywas.

10-08-08:  Check this out:  If you click my link to Brownells, and buy something there... I get 5%...  That could be enough to pay for MadOgre.com hosting.  Please use my link to Brownells for when you need to so some gun related shopping. There is a lot of good stuff that serious shooters need, that Brownells has. Magpul CTR stocks for your AR. Brownells AR mags, which are very very good for aluminum GI type mags. Action Lube Plus is awesome... it's a synthetic moly grease that is about the slickest stuff I've ever used. I use it in my shotguns, lever guns, and I use it on my auto pistol rails during break in. Awesome stuff. Everyone should have some of that.

Lots of guns. Including some SIG P226 Red Box guns in 9mm and .40 caliber. Great deals on those... I'm excited to get them. They are pre-owned, but like new and your getting them for a killer good price, with a warranty. You can't beat that. The SIG 1911GSR Platinum Elite is dead sexy 1911 .45 and we've got a couple of those in too. I know The Horde is a tried and true .45ACP crowd, so for you aficionados of .45 autos, you have got to take a good hard look at the Platinum Elite.

We also got in a very cool new rifle, a new Browning X-Bolt Stainless Stalker in 270WSM. Wow. It looks sharp and feels great in the hand. Shoulders easily and points – right there. This is a very nice rifle. But for the 949 price tag, it better be. I can't help but to like it. I could have that.

I got the Elite scope mounted on Steve's funky little .22 auto and it looks and feels proper now. I'll take a picture of it next time I'm at the range... which will be tomorrow on my lunch break if the weather is half decent. I can tell already that this is going to be a more accurate set up. And with the Elite, sitting at 2 power you still have the speed, but crank up the scope and you get the accuracy that it loses in the scout configuration.  Since that was the rifle's whole point... to be a Scout...I'll put it back to that.  This set up is to test this rifle's accuracy potential, and you can't do that with scout scope. It does “good enough” but I'm betting it can do better than expected. I'll test it as soon as I humanly can. I'd have done it the second I got off work, but the sun has already gone down by the time I leave the shop. It's depressing. We used to have almost a good 2 hours of sunlight to work on the range. Bloody seasons.

Okay, the Presidential Debate: Yeah, I watched it. McCain looked daft, but I'd rather have a Mad Hatter McCain, than stone cold sober Obama. McCain would make a point, then repeat that point until the horse died and then beat it some more. He did one thing I liked, which was to point out Obama's connection to Fanny Mae money. Notice how Obama never answered the charge, but only went to say that he did not represent Fanny Mae. If he wasn't' doing something for them, why would they be giving him so much payola? I think McCain did a very poor job. There are so many ways he could have speared Obama, but he didn't go there. Just kept talking about buying up bad loans and refundable tax credits. I don't know exactly what that plan all entails, but it sounds like buying votes. That's a weak position and I'm not sure if that would work exactly as he hopes. It's better than Barack's plan which is “We have to do something...” but never really got around to explain what. He talked a lot... but didn't say anything. He's a NINJA at speaking without saying anything.

The Nikon Hostage Challenge: So Nikon has a promotion going on using Lee and Tiffany from the show “Gettin Close” on the Outdoor Channel. It's a life sized cardboard poster with the two on there. Well, Tiffany is a cutie and Lee is standing right behind her in perfect “Hostage Situation” position. So it didn't take long for us to start talking smack. Well, we all put our money were our mouths are and new we have a 20 dollar bet. The target board will be put out at 500 yards and each shooter has 1 shot, to engage and neutralize the threat and save poor Tiffany. One shot only. If a shooter misses or hits the hottie, he's out. If the shooter hits – he stays in. If the other shooter/shooters also make clean hits and we have more than one victor, the target will be pushed out to 600 yards. And so on and so forth. To make this more interesting, we are all to use our main big game hunting rifles... we all have 7mm Rem Mags. To make this even more interesting, we are not allowed to adjust our rifles and get them all “dialed in”. We have to use our standard hunting zero that we all set them too – ahem – LAST YEAR. We are not expecting Tiffany to make it, the poor dear. But it's going to be fun. If everyone fails the shot and no one wins... well... I guess we can try a round two. This Challenge is going to happen as soon as we all have time away from the shop, church, and other commitments... so we are looking at this coming Tuesday. I'll take photos and fill you all in. I'm in this to win this.

It's October again and that means one thing. A bunch of photos emailed to everyone of fucking pumpkins throwing up. I swear to Crom, that if I get one more, I'm going to kill the sender. It's already started... I've already got like 17 of them, and today is only the eighth.

10-07-08:   I really didn't get much done today that I wanted to. I was going to mount a different scope on Steve's .22, a Bushnell Elite. But I didn't get into the shop. The Mighty Contour shit the bed this morning, but I got it back up and running. Got it inspected and registered again... so with all 4 new tires, fresh safety inspection and registration (All totaling over 600 bucks cash) I think I am going to keep it for awhile longer. Come March, and my birthday and my tax return... It's going bye bye, and I'm getting a new truck. Might as well drive it through the winter now though. It's good in snow, and the heater is a friggen blast furnace. Still needs an O2 sensor, but that's fine. She runs great and the observed MPG out the Machine Gun Shoot was a solid 32 MPG. Going out, speeds hit 120MPH and it loved to cruise it. Oh yes, the Valentine One was activated and on alert. But I didn't even see a Trooper until I hit Orem, and then I saw about 980 different cop cars cruising around. Anyways, that didn't have to do with anything today... Where was I?

Ah, getting Mrs. Ogre Registered to Vote. She had not changed over her registration to our new location here at Ogre Ranch. No, not so new now? Well, I dragged her in... and while she was filling out the card, I noticed she put down “Republican” as her party. This is interesting. You see, my wife has always been a total Anarchist. She doesn't want ANYONE telling her what she has to do. She's never declared a party before. “I'm conforming... and I like Palin.” Okay. That works for me. I'm proud of her.

So here we are... I got fresh stickers on the Contour saying I'm legal to drive it again... Mrs. Ogre has a card saying she's legal to vote again. So it's all good.

Silvershot needs a new bad guy. I am remaking my villain, from the ground up. He or she is an Indian shaman, evil, insane, and is very potent in black magic – specifically in necromancy. He/She can raise dead on the run and can mold dead flesh into undead creatures. Very powerful. I need to decide on the name and on the sex, and I need some more character details. This is what has been holding Silvershot back. I never liked the badguy. I want a new one. Hit me with some suggestions. I am leaning to a female this time.

Hit me with a name, a cool evil Indian name, and if you think it should be a Man or a Woman.  What do you guys think?

The Weapons Section as a couple new items.

Thirty Something.

One of my least favorite things at the gun shop is when some guy who we don't know, sends in his wife who we don't know, to buy some “300” or "30". We don't know the people, so we don't know which 300 the guy might have. 300 generally means a .30 Caliber of some sort and well, there are too many common options to just pick one. During hunting season, this happens on a regular basis. So guys, if you do send your girl into town to pick up a box of ammunition – do your wife a favor. Rip off the end tab of your last box of ammo and send that with her so the guys at the gun store know exactly what you need, and we don't think of you in a less than flattering manner.

Let's look at some of these 30 cal cartridges. There are 10 different common 30's. Each one has its own strengths and weaknesses.

The .30-30 Winchester. The Thirty really started as a market success with the .30-30 Winchester. This was the first serious high velocity metallic cartridge using smokeless powder. It was a hot rod back in its day. Shooters were amazed. These days, the .30-30 is often scoffed at by those that don't get it. Personally, the .30-30 remains a favorite of mine. It's mild, yet potent enough to take down an elk at 200 yards. Typically it fires bullets from 150 grains to 170 grains, at moderate velocities from 2250 FPS to 2400 FPS. Accuracy is average to pretty good from most rifles. Most of which are lever action rifles with open sights. The best I've ever seen a .30-30 do was half inch groups at 100 yards in a rifle that had about 250 bucks worth of gunsmithing to tune it for better accuracy.

The .30-06 Springfield. This is the classic .30 caliber cartridge that America has used all around the world fighting for our freedom. The Aught Six as it as loving called, has fathered more offspring cartridges than anything else. Most notable is the .270 Winchester, which has become the second most popular cartridge according to nationwide sales... but that is another story. The Aught Six fires bullets usually between 150 grains to 200 grains, but there are loads out there going lighter or heavier... I've seen them as low as 110 grains and as high as 225 grains. Velocity is high, but remember, this is not a Magnum cartridge. Velocities are typically centered around 2800 FPS. Accuracy is very good, but could be better because the case has a lot of wasted space in it, reducing the efficiency of cartridge and allowing for less consistent powder burn. This cartridge went to war in WWI in our bolt action Springfield 1903 rifles, then into WWII in our M1 Garands, and into Vietnam still in our 1903 Springfields that were accurized and scoped and used as sniper rifles. Because of the shear number of surplus rifles on the market, and because of the almost universal acceptance, use, and general fondness of this cartridge... it has become the Number One cartridge in America for overall sales. Still today, it remains the Top Dog. Every company that makes a rifle, makes one in .30-06. There are those that love it with a passion, and there are those that don't really like it... but no knowledgeable shooter disrespects it.

The .308 Winchester. After WWII, the M1 Garand was altered and the action was tweaked to fire from a detachable box magazine. This needed a cartridges that was shorter for better feeding. This is where the .308 Winchester came to the spotlight. This gives us almost the same performance of the .30-06, but does so with greater efficiency and thus better overall accuracy. Again, like the Aught Six, the Three'oh'eight fires rounds from 150 grains to 180 grains like most of the .30 cals going on... but does so at about 2700 FPS, which is only about 100 FPS slower than the Aught Six.

The .300 Savage. This one goes back to 1921 and was the first “300”. It was hugely popular for a time, and chambered in Savage's strange yet good model 99 lever action. It's a bit shorter than the .308, and milder, pumping out 150 grain loads to a pleasant 2630. You can bump up the loads to 180 grainers, but the speed drops off a bit too much I think. So while it's a lighter hitter than the .308 and a harder hitter than the .30-30, it occupies a comfortable place in that middle ground. It very well could be the ideal .30 caliber for light carbines. Imagine a Model 7 Remington in this cartridge... that would be great combination. The round is very accurate and just a pleasure to shoot.

The .300 Winchester Magnum. In 1963 gun makers decided to go big in terms of velocities. Winchester hit the home run with the .300 Win Mag, and its the ballistic equivellent of the Mona Lisa. A work of art. And a work by which all other .30 caliber magnums are compared to. It's powerful and has a strong kick to it, but not too hard as to be punishing. In a full sized rifle, it is quite manageable. You can load a 180 grain bullet up to 3,000 FPS... a dramatic increase in horsepower. People just call this round “The Win Mag” and most everyone knows exactly what you are talking about.

The .300 Remington Ultra Mag. Remington had to do something big, so they came out with the .300 Remington Ultra Mag.... or the .300 RUM as I like to call it. This cranks to the same slug as the .300 Win Mag about 250 to 300 FPS faster and hitting harder by about 600 foot pounds of energy according to typical load data. This cartridge is a dragon slayer. There are some out there that are hotter, like the .30-378 Weatherby magnum, but not by much. If a scope is going to get bucked off a rifle and break mounts and rings – most likely the gun is going to be a .300 RUM. Around where I live, we call these “Elk Cannons” and we sell a ton of them. For long range knock down, this has it. The .300 RUM can body slam an Elk at a thousand yards.

The .300 Winchester Short Magnum. When this one first came out a few years ago, I scoffed at it. “Same ballistics as a .300 Win Mag? What's the point?” Well, what it gives you is that classic Win Mag power, but it does so with greater accuracy and with about 20% less felt recoil. I set up two rifles exactly the same... Synthetic stocked Weatherby Vanguards, using the same rings and bases I mounted the same scopes on each. The only difference was that one was a Win Mag, the other a Short Mag. The Win Mag kick was tolerable, but after 10 rounds I was done shooting it for the day. I shot a sub 1 inch group with it and it was great. Reaching out with that much crushing power, that is a lot of violence to focus into a inch. Then I shot the Short Mag. I shot a one hole group, and it was actually fun to shoot. Less recoil enough to shoot all day... I ran out of bullets for it. Same speed, greater accuracy, less recoil... this round has no downsides. Marketing didn't come up with this round like I thought... this is ballistics engineering at its finest.

The .300 Remington Short Action Ultra Mag. Remington wanted to do something in a Short Mag type platform and they came out with the Short Action Ultra Mag... and it flopped. It's a decent round, just a tick behind the .300 WSM, but it does so in a slightly shorter length, allowing it to be able to be used in .308 length actions. This allows us to make AR-10/SR-25 type rifles that hit like a .300 Win Mag. To me, that makes it a winner. I think this is just about the perfect cartridge for military applications in GPMG's (General Purpose Machine Guns such as the M-60 and M-240). The US Military wants more power? Here it is. Take our current crop of .308 caliber SR-25 sniper rifles and rebarrel them to .300SAUM... presto. While I think the SAUM has it's place, it is a commercial flop. The WSM beat it, but I think this is more of a perception matter than performance. People hear “Ultra Mag” and they want a dragon slayer, not just another Win Mag Mirror. I think Hornady could lend a hand and blend some powders and do their alchemy and come up with a Heavy Mag load for the .300 SAUM and it would then enjoy a ballistic advantage... But that is neither here nor there.

The .30 T/C. With the trend for making all things short and chubby, someone had to do it... so TC did. They made a .30-06 Short Mag. This cartridge mirrors the classic .30-06 ballistics. But it is more than that. It does so in a shorter, more efficient case. It's the same length as the .308 Winchester but a touch chunkier. It is of course more accurate thanks to the greater efficiency. It also does two things that we are going to take as a bonus. It has less felt recoil, and it's actually faster than the Aught Six by a few FPS, and in some loads up to 100 FPS faster. Not much... and nothing to make me want to run out and buy a new rifle in this caliber. It's a like a hot handloaded .308, and in my opinion nothing more. TC brags that it's the first cartridge with the TC head stamp, and that's fine. Bully for them, but I'm thinking it's rather un-needed. Now if they had taken this chunk of brass and necked it down to a 7mm, 6.5, or a .25 caliber – maybe we would talk.

The .300 RCM. The RCM stands for Ruger Compact Magnum, and in the same 24 inch barrel, it's a clone of the .300 WSM. The RCM uses a different powder blend and gets up to speed quicker, meaning it works in shorter 20 inch barrels. I guess that's nice. For guys guys that want short barreled Magnum rifles... all three of those guys should be happy with the .300 RCM. I have to be honest here, these last two rounds, the .30TC and the .300 RCM... the .30 caliber market is crowded enough and good, proven, classic calibers are being pushed out by these new rounds that do things slightly different. Yes, yes, yes, it's accurate. But so was the .300 Savage. I don't see a place for the .300 RCM in the future, and I think the .30T/C is going to die out as well, rather sooner than later. But that's just my prediction. Who knows. It could really take off like the .300 WSM did. Now, Ruger has a version of this cartridge in .338... the .338 RCM and that has some serious potential there. I like that idea, but in the .300 class, it's like just another boy band. We've heard that tune before and looks the same as the others.

If I was to pick a new .30 caliber round for all around use, I'd pick the .300 WSM. It does everything right, and nothing wrong. As a beer commercial once said, “Tastes Great, Less Filling”.

Oh, and if you send your wife to me asking for just some ".300", I'm going to assume you mean the first one out, the .300 Savage.  I hope that's right because you can't return ammo.  Hopefully that will teach you to remember which .300 your talking about.  I can't read minds from a distance, especially dim ones.

10-06-08:  Gone Country: I don't know exactly when it happened... but I noticed that I am listening to more Country Music than I am Heavy Metal. Normally, you can count on Ogre Ranch being rocked by the likes of Zombie or Disturbed... but now days you are more likely to hear Kieth Urban or Darius Rucker or Carrie Underwood. I've grown to like Country, but I never put it above Heavy or Alternative rock or metal... but it's there. Try this.... some Dierks Bentley. Honestly listen to it, without bias. This is your typical modern Country song right here. Now tell me that sucks. You can't. That's good music. And that chick is BANGING. Country chicks are HOT. But if you listen to the music, honestly... it doesn't suck. Not only does it not suck... it speaks to you. At least it speaks to me. How about this one? Tell me that isn't hot stuff. Really, the only thing that makes Country Music different from other genres, us the use of an instrument called the steel guitar. Take that away, and you have classic rock and the blues. It's like your classic recipe and throw in some chili powder. Now Country isn't just for red necks anymore.

It's for mature conservative people who live real lives. Yeah, they sing songs about relationships gone bad, but they also sing about trucks and guns and hot chicks and all that stuff we all like. So what's not to like?  This doesn't mean I'm going to toss out my Godsmack. It just means more on the old iPod... er... if I had an iPod... never mind.

Fun day at the Ogre's Playground: I brought out a few guns I wanted to work with today. First off was my beloved 527 Carbine in 7.62x39mm. This small rifle really brings me more pure shooting joy that almost anything else. This is my One Rifle. If I had to pick just one... this is it. I've got it down to where it is shooting ½ inch groups at 100 yards, and with it, I can hit kill-zone shots all the way out to 500 yards reliably. But I will keep it inside 400 for deer sized game. Just because I can reach it doesn't mean the bullet will still have enough energy for a clean and ethical kill. I have killed coyote with it out to 600, but that's just because I don't believe in ethics when it comes to coyotes or prairie dogs. They are a pestilence, and I don't care if it takes it a week to die – as long as it dies. Anyways, that's another topic of discussion altogether. Another time on that one. Anyways... I am pleased with the rifle... and I am pleased with the Vortex Viper 2-7x32mm scope on it. What I am not happy with are the mounts. I want to go to a solid one piece base with weaver rings. I'll convert my 527 to that in the future. I really love that gun.

Another gun I'm digging is a funky little .22 that STING lent to me to zero. It's a custom Ruger 10/22. Check the photo. It's a short, heavy barrel, scout configuration with a heavy laminated stock. This is like the wrong combination of all the right parts... it makes no sense... but it's a freaking shooter and a half. I got it zeroed for 50 yards, which is about where you want a .22 carbine. And it's Dead Nuts On. It's shooting about half an inch group there using CCI Velocitor ammunition. I'll have to try out other loads to see what it likes... but considering the scope is only a 2x and it's in a scout position - .5 inches is pretty dang good. It got blooded as well. Prairie Dog at about 90 yards. Hit low twice and it started run, third shot tagged it center of mass. I saw a bloom of red on it, just behind it's front legs as it dove into a hole. It's done. .22LR doesn't have the same Instant Roadkill effect that .22-250 has, but it is lethal. Velocitor hollow points are not to be taken lightly when it comes to .22 Long Rifle ammunition. So while the Prairie Dog made it to its hole, it is never coming back out. It was a good hit. Nice rifle. This thing begs for a folding stock and a 30 round magazine. I have to get a 30 rounder just to play with, and give that to Steve as a thank you for letting me spend some quality time with this little rifle. It's a daisy. I like it.

I think the accuracy would be greatly improved if it had a little more scope. This scope is nice and workable – but I think a traditionally mounted scope with a bit more magnification would really help this rig out. Like a Bushnell Elite 3200 2-7x32mm. I think we would see the groups shrink dramatically. Scout scopes are cool, I'll give it that... but I think this is the wrong application of the ideology. A .22 Auto-Scout? Maybe in Appalachia. In Utah? Not so much. I've emailed Steve to get his take, and permission to to a little experimentation to see if we can't get some tighter groups. Unless he's sold lock, stock, and barrel on the “Scout” configuration.

While I was doing this, The Travis came out to join me at the range. He had his .22 caliber Thompson Center R55 with him, with the Pride & Fowler .22 scope on it. This was the scope PFI sent me to test, and Travis has a 22 that was in need of an optic, so he graciously agreed to put it on his R55.  We worked with the PFI rimfire scope and got it dialed in. The gun is pretty accurate, but I think he had an ammunition issue as well. The PFI did very well, shooting just a touch flatter than the calibrated crosshairs indicated... probably because we were not using High Velocity ammo, rather we were shooting “Hyper Velocity” ammo. Still, it was close enough, if our targets were standard AA grade chicken eggs, we would have had the same results all the way out to 180 yards. The TC R55 rifle did have some issues with reliability, which would be ammo related. Because his batch of ammo had a wax coating that looked and felt and acted like frosting on Krispy Kreme donuts. Mine wasn't like that, and he later found some other ammo that wasn't like that either. Bad ammo can ruin a day of shooting real quick. The R55 has been known to be a very good rifle... but I have to admit I'm not impressed. I don't think that it did anything that my Marlin Model 60 couldn't have done. What did impress me is that Pride and Fowler scope. DAYUM, that's a nice scope. I love it. If you are looking to buy a knew scope for your hunting .22, that's it. That is freaking it.. PFI make some NICE scopes... might not be target/benchrest scopes – but when it comes to Killing Shit – there is nothing better than PFI.

10-5-08: Obama frightens me. Well, not the man personally... but the fanatical and unquestioning devotion his followers have. It's like a Religious Cult. Hordemembers have sent us two videos that have to be watched, carefully. It reminds me of the old country saying that you have to stand up for something, or you'll fall for anything. Obama appeals to the ignorant, the gullible, the stupid, the lazy, and most of all... the opportunists. That is what frightens me.

Email about this video:  "This scares me because it reminds me of fanatical followers of dictators and terrorists. I saw this and it is making me tremble. I've been in fights with guys twice my size and I wasn't as scared as I was when I watched this. I saw this and it was the deciding factor in whether or not I bought a new handgun. If Obama wins, he's going to have guys like these in his 'brown shirt' squads in the Civilian Defense Corp. If he loses, guys like these are going to be rioting in the street, and I'm stuck in a Democrat district. Whatever happens this November, it's going to be bad. If Obama wins, he'll try to strip away the Second Amendment, just like he's been trying to do in his votes ever since he entered politics. If he loses, his fanatical followers will try to burn this country to the ground. Whatever happens, I'm going to be clutching my 10mm on election night. Stephen"

10-4-08:  The FBMG MG Shoot. Last couple years, the FBMG MG Shoot has been a big event. This year, it was almost completely washed out. It rained constantly all day. FBMG sold a lot of rainproof jackets... even I got one. Yes, now even I have some of this new Digital Camo. But in honor of the excellent instruction I got at LRI, and in protest of the Army's choice of Smurflauge, I picked the Marine Corps version of the digital stuff... this is a darker color that still works well in the desert. Okay, and it was the only one in my size. I've got one word for all y'all. Tannerite. This is a low grade explosive triggered by heat or shock... meaning, you shoot it, and it explodes. Just for giggles, they lined up 3 six pound kegs of the stuff and nailed it with a .50. I was in the field shack and I could still feel the concussion through my chest. Whoomp! Silenced weapons, MP5s, .50, and various Russian weapons. You gotta love those Russian weapons that as soon as they jam, the first thing you reach for is a hammer. Unfortunately due to the rain, only the hardest of hard core gun nuts made it out. They braved a long muddy road, constant rain, cold... but they didn't suffer too bad. The FBMG crew suffered the most. You see, when you put on an event – it costs just as much to have a couple people show up as it does to have a whole bunch of people. They lost a ton of money. They really did. And then to add to the troubles, the FBMG Deuce and a Half had the transmission drop out of it. I don't know how much a Deuce tranny costs... but they are out 350 bucks just for the tow. You can't use just any tow truck to haul a Deuce. Ouch. Double Ouch. So do me a favor guys, if you are in the market for anything tactical related, or a new gun – please... Contact FBMG and give them your business. They could really use it right now. This isn't a pity party, this is for appreciation for their efforts to make shooting available to the public.

One thing they have at FBMG, that you need... Magpul AR mags. Remember how I said how good they are? Well, FBMG has a ton of them and they are selling them for only 17 bucks each. This is the best AR mag out there. If you have, or if you want an AR – stock up on some Magpul mags. Now is a very good time. Don't buy all the tan colored ones, I am going to need a few myself. They have tan, green, and black.

Here's an idea for FBMG. Have their annual MG shoot on the 4th of July. FBMG's Firepower and Fireworks on the Forth... Celebrate Liberty with FBMG! Have all the guns, dogs and burgers, and maybe a couple bands, have a couple door prizes. They could make that huge. And they would have a greater likelihood of good weather too. And instead of people wasting money on BS fireworks... they can buy ammo and really make some noise.

The Pink AR... FBMG's Breast Cancer Charity Rifle was awarded. Some dude I don't know was the lucky man, but Larry told me that he was a good FBMG customer, so that was cool. That's the way it should be. Reward the loyal.

Oh, I also had to buy a Drag Bag for my sniper rifle. So, there was 150 bucks on the bag and the jacket... and Mrs. Ogre told me to go light on the money. Ouch. She's not too mad. She said I still have a change to be lucky tonight.... Vooma vooma! Yeah, I didn't feel the need to tell her that I left my SIG 556 there with Joe to get a desert camo Duracoat job done. She doesn't need to know this. Shut up.

It was awesome to see everyone again. It's been forever since I've been out there... it was great to see Steve again, Nightcrawler, The Fumigator, Dave, and everyone from FBMG.

Derek Zeanah has again taken the lower road with The High Road, and this time with Armed Polite Society. Read this through. This is once again, pure outright theft, and in this case... a second count of theft. I don't think this is a civil matter, I think this is a criminal matter. This pisses me off. One morning, Derek should go to work and find that the THR and APS servers have been physically removed. It's a good thing I don't live in that area. Watch, APS is going to go down “for maintenance”. Derek, die in a fire.

Almost as Shady as Derek, Obama is getting illegal donations. Hordeman MattR has sent us this article. You thought you were pissed before? Read this. And this one. “George, I hope that this article does not make you barf. WTF are Nigerians doing raising money for OBAMA .... it cannot be legal ..... $900,000 ! Katie Couric is fucking with Sarah about her SCOTUS knowledge and this shit is going on and nobody in main stream media gives a fuck. - MattR” Indeed, this makes me sick to my stomach. Almost as much as Derek... almost.

I'm exhausted. I'm done for the night.

10-3-08:  Oh for the love of... The UK has grown to become the biggest nation of cowards, I've ever seen. Fear over a 2.5” Swiss Army knife... the type with a nail file, little scissors, a tooth pick, and a set of tweezers. The blade doesn't even lock. You have got to be kidding me. Its almost silly, so The Sun has to show a Hoodie holding the knife in a menacing way. I'm sorry for those in the UK that have balls... because they are burdened with the knowledge that the only threat this knife is, is to stray threads or nose hairs. It's a grooming tool, not a weapon. It's a utility thing, not a violent thing. A tool is a tool... and these pussy Health and Safety nannies in the UK are the ultimate tools. It wasn't too long ago that the UK actually had balls. FRANCE has more balls than the UK anymore. FRANCE!

Many of The Horde are still frequenting THR. This is disappointing. I can't tell you what to do, and I don't want to. But I am personally disappointed. Over at The Liberty Zone, we find the clearest message about the THR Theft. I'm not going to play with stolen goods. Right is right and wrong is wrong... that's all there is to it. It's cut and dry.

SUCK. Okay, so I erase Vista off the desktop machine and install Ubuntu. It installs beautifully. Then it updates with just a click. Done. Awesome. Then it tells me that there is an ATI driver I can use. So I click to use it. Then it reboots just fine... I log in with user name and password... and the screen goes white. WTF. Damnitall. Scew this. Where is my XP Pro disk again? Can't find my bloody XP Pro disk. Wife is pissed at me now because the PC she uses the most is showing just a blank white screen with a cursor in it. Great. This is why I don't do tech anymore. I hate this shit now.

Joe Biden's 14 Lies
1. TAX VOTE: Biden said McCain voted “the exact same way” as Obama to increase taxes on Americans earning just $42,000, but McCain DID NOT VOTE THAT WAY.
2. AHMEDINIJAD MEETING: Joe Biden lied when he said that Barack Obama never said that he would sit down unconditionally with Mahmoud Ahmedinijad of Iran. Barack Obama did say specifically, and Joe Biden attacked him for it.
3. OFFSHORE OIL DRILLING: Biden said, “Drill we must.” But Biden has opposed offshore drilling and even compared offshore drilling to “raping” the Outer Continental Shelf.”
4. TROOP FUNDING: Joe Biden lied when he indicated that John McCain and Barack Obama voted the same way against funding the troops in the field. John McCain opposed a bill that included a timeline, that the President of the United States had already said he would veto regardless of it’s passage.
5. OPPOSING CLEAN COAL: Biden says he’s always been for clean coal, but he just told a voter that he is against clean coal and any new coal plants in America and has a record of voting against clean coal and coal in the U.S. Senate.
6. ALERNATIVE ENERGY VOTES: According to FactCheck.org, Biden is exaggerating and overstating John McCain’s record voting for alternative energy when he says he voted against it 23 times.
7. HEALTH INSURANCE: Biden falsely said McCain will raise taxes on people's health insurance coverage -- they get a tax credit to offset any tax hike. Independent fact checkers have confirmed this attack is false
8. OIL TAXES: Biden falsely said Palin supported a windfall profits tax in Alaska -- she reformed the state tax and revenue system, it's not a windfall profits tax.
9. AFGHANISTAN / GEN. MCKIERNAN COMMENTS: Biden said that top military commander in Iraq said the principles of the surge could not be applied to Afghanistan, but the commander of NATO's International Security Assistance Force Gen. David D. McKiernan said that there were principles of the surge strategy, including working with tribes, that could be applied in Afghanistan.
10. REGULATION: Biden falsely said McCain weakened regulation -- he actually called for more regulation on Fannie and Freddie.
11. IRAQ: When Joe Biden lied when he said that John McCain was “dead wrong on Iraq”, because Joe Biden shared the same vote to authorize the war and differed on the surge strategy where they John McCain has been proven right.
12. TAX INCREASES: Biden said Americans earning less than $250,000 wouldn’t see higher taxes, but the Obama-Biden tax plan would raise taxes on individuals making $200,000 or more.
13. BAILOUT: Biden said the economic rescue legislation matches the four principles that Obama laid out, but in reality it doesn’t meet two of the four principles that Obama outlined on Sept. 19, which were that it include an emergency economic stimulus package, and that it be part of “part of a globally coordinated effort with our partners in the G-20.”
14. REAGAN TAX RATES: Biden is wrong in saying that under Obama, Americans won't pay any more in taxes then they did under Reagan.

Awesome:

Veep Debates: Biden, from what I saw, never answered a single question. When a question was asked, he would talk about John McCain and would just never give a straight up answer. Palin, made clear points, answered questions, and talked in a way that Joe Sixpack can understand. I like that. I like Palin. Biden is a total cock. The Political Pundits out there on both sides of the Great Political Divide (Good vs Evil?) claim their side one the debate. If you poll on CNN, Biden won, Drudge Report shows Palin won. In reality I think both did what their party was hoping for. We'll see in November. Palin did impress me the most. She had as some have said “lower expectations”, and she shoved those expectations down their throats. All Biden had to do was show up. Dem Pundits said this was Bidens best debate ever, and really... I can't argue that because I've never seen or heard Biden debate before. Palin on the other hand, never has... so she comes out from nowhere, strong, confident, and takes the stage and the attention from Biden. Michelle Malkin has a good write up about the results. Palin in '08!

What really annoyed me was the ticker, measuring these Ohio Undecided reactions to what they are saying. If you watched, Biden got a bump just for having the camera pointed at him. I sense a little bias here. He got big bumps for saying McCain, regardless of what he was saying about him. I thought that tracker was useless and I thought that it was distracting from the issues. The other thing I thought was useless was the Focus Group Q&A after the debate. I'm sure the people there were all just fine upstanding individuals, but I think the format of the Focus Group questions was retarded. The reporter holding the mic, walking back and forth and pointing... it was more for show than about intellectual discourse. Useless.

Deciding on a Vortex: I am canceling my order for the Vortex Strikefire. Cindy from Vortex called me and told me that the Strikefire was there and ready to ship. I said to just hold on. I'm not sure I even want it now from what I've seen and what's been reported. Some guys get good ones and the unit is probably just fine... others have got units that are giving them problems. The optical doubler is a joke. The one I tested briefly, you screwed it on and it looked like it drooped down and sagged... it had parallax, no eye relief and it just wasn't very clear. I think for 129 bucks retail, you are getting a 129 dollar optical gunsight. I was just hoping that it would be better, like everything else I've seen from Vortex. Here is the disconnect. Vortex stuff is usually manufactured in Japan, and the Strikefire is made in China. I am deciding on either another set of Binos, this time the Viper 10x42, or the Skyline spotting scope... or I could go cheaper and get the 10x50 Vultures and the Impact compact spotter. I don't know. I was thinking about getting another rifle scope and mounting it on my SIG to give me more reach than my Bushnell Holosight. Unfortunately Vortex doesn't make anything quite like what I am wanting. Nightforce does. Unfortunately Nightforce is expensive. I'm not saying that they are not worth the money – they are. Believe me, Nightforce is worth the money. Every penny. I just can't afford it. Anyways... Vortex has a couple things that I think I might like. Or I might just get something and send it to LRI for the boys up there. They can make good use of it. But they might not need it. Nikon, Bushnell, and Leupold are looking at sending some glass up there for LRI use. I've been working with these factory reps and I am curious as to see who is going to kit out LRI first now. Kind of playing them against each other. Hmm... I think I'll put Vortex into the mix.

My brother is an Imperial Space Marine: Check this out. For those that don't know, “Space Marines” are from “Warhammer 40000”, and UK fantasy game universe that is probably the coolest thing to come out of the UK since the two seat sports car and Keira Knightley. As far as fun times, playing Warhammer for an evening is amusing... but I think we'd all rather play with Keira and a can of whipped cream.  Yes, I'm a pig.

10-01-08:  I got a new stock for my SIG 556... the Magpul CTR stock. I also received a few of their excellent Pmags and one of their pistol grips. The CTR stock as well thought out and slips easily on your existing collapsible stock's buffer tube. There are two types of CTR stocks, the Mil-Spec and the Commercial. The differences is that the Mil-Spec is slightly different diameter than the Commercial. My SIG 556 uses the Commercial CTR stock, as does a lot of AR type rifles. The advantage of the CTR is that it looks very cool. Other than looks, it has a small advantage of a protected latch mechanism and a friction lock mechanism that prevents the stock from collapsing when you don't want it too. I mean, who really needs that, right? Sure, last week I was leaning over some juniper busting on a couple coyotes... shot one and went to shoot the next one and the stock's latch hits a branch and collapses the stock during recoil and almost breaks my nose. It didn't hurt too bad, but it was distracting and it let the dog get away. That was 30 bucks hauling ass away, because my M4 style stock let go. That can not happen with the Magpul CTR stock. It just can't. The stock feels a lot more solid than your typical M4 type stock, and it even feels more stable than the factory SIG 4 position stock. If you look at the SIG 556 SWAT rifle, the CTR is on it from SIG directly.

The MIAD pistol grip for the M-16/M-4 type rifle is freaking clever. You don't see this much thought going in to a pistol grip. It's modular, so you can put in different front and back panels to get the fit you want. It also has a grip plug that can be swapped out to hold different types of batteries, some spare ammo, or a spare bolt and firing pin. Not only does it look cool too, but it actually feels good. As cool as these stocks and grips are, the coolest thing is the Pmag. Magpul's polymer magazine. I'm not going to get into the details on these mags, but I will say this. These are the best magazines for your AR type rifle you can get. And they are cheap too. Instead of buying more GI mags or more SIG mags, or even these HK mags... I'm ordering more Pmags from Magpul next time I need some more. They are just excellent.

Some things I'm working on for MadOgre.com: My examination of some of the most popular .30 caliber cartridges on the market, including the .300 WSM, .300 SAUM, .30 T/C, and the new .300 RCM. I'm also working on the Guns Of: 28 Weeks Later.
