1-1-08 to 1-23-08

1-23-08:  One Ring to Rule Them All: Check this out, it's a ring gun. The gun part is a very small pin-fire pepper-box revolver. The trigger folds out to fire. The cylinder unlocks and swings out or falls out to load from the rear. It's an interesting gun... Looks to be from the Victorian era, looks either European or Russian based on the double headed eagle crest. Similar crests are found in Russia based on the position of the legs. Most crests I've seen like this are Russian, but I've seen similar crests like it associated with Scottish Rite Masons. So I'm not sure of the origin. I'm not familiar with the proof mark, so I have no idea where it came from. In the last image, you can see some remains of the nickel plating that it had for a finish... that little bang bang bling would look cool in nickel. All I know for sure is that this ring is awesome and I want one. I'd prefer mine in .22 CB Short, as pin fire ammo is a little hard to find these days.

Ron Paul: I'm only going to say this once... or at least once this week. For all you Ron Paul pushers out there... GIVE IT UP. Ron is not electable. I agree, he'd be pretty damn good in the White House, but let's be real. He ain't getting it. He will never be the President. Ever. At least not of the USA. He wont get the Republican Nomination.... and if he doesn't have enough pull to get that, he wont have enough to win as a 3rd Party. The only way he could would be for there to be a dozen or more 3rd parties all running... only then would he have a chance. Instead of that flight of fancy, we have what we have... Two main parties. Let's look back to the 2000 election, G. W. Bush against Al Gore. There was only one main 3rd Party candidate out there, and that was Ralph Nader with his Green Party. Bush and Gore really came down to the wire then... down to just a couple hundred votes. The reason for that, was because of Ralph. If Ralph had not run, all those Green Party votes would have gone to Gore, and Gore would have won the election. Now lets look at '08. If Ron Paul doesn't win the nomination, he very well could run as the 3rd party, and that would be a disaster. If he does, and If you vote for Ron Paul, you are slitting your own throat and the rest of ours. A vote for Ron Paul would be a vote for Hillary or Obama. Simple as that... you would split the votes and would make Ron Paul our Ralph Nader. So quit trying to pimp Ron Paul on me, you shallow, dim witted, chest thumper. Get over Ron Paul or you are going to hand the election over to the Democrats! Please, think strategically. At least try to.

Our friend Ben is joining our team manning the gun counter. We are short handed, and while the customer flow is a little slower this time of year, we have tons of stuff that has to get done. We sure can use the help, and we are happy Ben is coming aboard. We did get some applications, and prospects were grim. Guys that seemed to be a little too into guns for none of the right reasons... if you know what I mean. Kids who were just a bit too enthusiastic about the idea of it all. And guys who just seemed to be a bit, well, not all there. Here is a hint, if you are going to ask for an application, wash. Wash your self, wash your hair, wash your clothes, and take out all those multiple piercings and roll your sleeves down to hide your tattoos. Seriously. Gun shops are generally pretty conservative places and we don't really go for all that stuff... we can tolerate it, but only in small doses. Ben is actually a very smart guy, he already gets along with everyone at the shop, he'll fit right in. And let me tell you, doing all these inventories... everyone is looking forward to him coming. He of course had to give his two week notice, and we understand that... professional courtesy... but we are getting impatient.

SIG: We got in a couple Red Box SIG's. These are factory reconditioned, used guns. They are kind of a pot luck affair as we don't really know what we are going to get. One gun came in yesterday, it was a basic P226. So we put it out on the shelf with a price tag, good price, all is well. Now then today the other gun came in... same factory part number from SIG. Same price we paid to get it from SIG... but it's not a basic P226. It's an Elite model, with night sights and a blackened stainless slide, and red wood grips. Fantastic! This one will not go out on the shelf. This is one of those killed deals you dream about. This gun usually retails for a cool grand, and we've got it for about half, with full SIG warranties. Awesome. This gun is most likely not going to hit the shelves... I'm not in the market for another 9MM myself, but one of the guys at the shop is up for snagging a killer good deal. No one has snagged it yet. Perhaps Ben will. If Ben doesn't, well... l want to see it go to someone who can really appreciate this gun for what it is. This is like buying a 190E 2.6 for the price of a Kia. If I didn't have my beloved CZ P-01, I'd be all over this one myself. That damned CZ has spoiled me... Arrgh... I hate CZ for that!

Email from Reader: OMG!!! When I saw the link to Spanish Version I had to think WTF is this? Johnny Cash giving the Finger. I laughed till tears run down my face... That tickled me to no end... Thanks for the Laugh!!! Orren” Glad you liked it.

Correction: The other day when I mentioned abortion and Fetal Smoothies, I was incorrect and I am sorry. What I should have said was Fetal Salsa... the doctors don't blend them enough to be smooth and creamy.

Remington Shotguns: One of The Horde has written in about a problem with his 870 Express. He said his finish is flaking off. He wanted to know what finish it was that he had. For the finish to be coming off, he would have to have one of the Parkerized 870's and that's what I said... I've seem Park come off from chipping so that had to be it. But he is sure that his is a typical bead blasted blued guns. Since bluing is a controlled oxidization of the surface of the metal, there is nothing on a blued gun that can chip off or flake off, so it can't be blued. That leaves it to be parked by reason of logic. Remington's web site says that all 870 Express guns are BB Blued and the Police models are Parked. But I have several 870 Express Magnums that are Parked... so this leads me to believe one thing... Remington's website is inaccurate.

Browning Shotguns: I know I have one reader living in Greece that is a huge fan of Browning Silver Hunters. I have to say that I am not. I've had more problems with Browning automatic shotguns than any other shotgun save the Legacy Sport International “Pointer” over unders. Please, don't ever buy a “Pointer”. If you want to, save yourself the time and money and just smack your self in the face with the lid to a Dutch Oven. The headache you get will be the same as if you purchased the Pointer. We will not be getting any more of those guns in. Back to the Browning. Silver and Gold Hunters... if a fellow walks up to the counter and says he has a problem with his shotgun, before he opens the case, I know it's going to be a Browning auto. Simple fact, we don't have problems with Benelli shotguns. Ever. This one today had the charging handle shear off during firing. The guy (that we trust) said that while he was blasting some birds, he saw the little handle go flying off out into the water. It didn't fall out... it sheared off clean. This wasn't the only problem. The fore end didn't match the shoulder stock. His original fore end broke, and Browning sent another one. It wasn't even the same finish... instead of a gloss finish, it was matte and wood of a totally different color and grain. They sent another and it was even worse than the first. So we are sending the whole gun back to Browning so they can get a look at the wood they put on Silver Hunters... because it is supposed to look like the wood on all the other Silver Hunters we have and you would think they could just send another one of those. Evidently they must get the wood for replacement fore ends from discarded orange crates. So to put in in a nut shell, Browning have been nothing but nightmares for us. I'll take a Benelli any day. Now when it comes to Over Unders, I'll behind Browning 100% and I am completely taken by the Cynergy line. I love those guns... the only other one I'd consider would be a Citori Feather, and that's Browning too... so I'm not all against Browning Shotguns. I even like the BPS pumps quite a bit. Just not the Autos. I think Browning needs to redesign the action from stock to muzzle.

1-22-08:  Ah, now this is some interesting news. Pvt. Pyle has started a blog. This should be good. Book mark this one and check in often.... Because Pvt. Pyle is probably the second most opinionated magnificent bastard in the State of Utah next to myself. Pyle, much like myself, will be blunt, confrontational, and offensive... and more often than not, he'll be right. For those who don't know Pyle, he's a vet, former SF, gun store owner, and right solid guy. Well worth the automatic inclusion to my list of links.

Hogue sent our store a bunch of promotional items... such as dummy guns with Hogue grips on them, posters, and other swag like that to help us sell Hogue grips and stocks. The only problem is that we don't sell Hogue grips. We have no plans to sell them either. We did in the past, but really all we did was sink a ton of money into inventory only to watch the packaging yellow with age because it just never sold. We ended up discounting the stuff steeply, just to get rid of it. Not that there is anything wrong with the stuff. It's just that anyone who wants it, just orders it online now. To sell it, we would have to set apart a rather large area to be able to put out a selection of Hogue products. We just don't have the room right now because our store is stuffed to the rafters with things already. And what's funny about that is that we are in our thin season. After the hunting and holiday seasons and before all the year's orders for inventory comes crashing in like waves on a beach. So what are we going to do with all the swag? Cannibalize it and use the bones for soup. I was actually wanting a set of Hogue's finger groove grips for one of my 1911's. In fact, I was going to order a set (online) on Monday when I get another paycheck. Well, now I don't have to. I used to require these grips on all my 1911's. No matter what. Then I mellowed that requirement until I didn't have any. This is the first set of Hogue grips I've had in over 6 years. They feel great. They make the Scandium Commander look absolutely sinister. Ogre likes. Unlike other grip changes that just change the gun's appearance, the Hogues actually change the way the gun handles. This is like putting good BFG tires on your car. Looks good, and gives you lots of traction.

So Heath Ledger drank down a bottle of pills and ended himself. I know several people who are upset about this. It's too bad, because the word is that he was a fantastic Joker in the new Batman movie coming out. I'm not weepy about this, and to be honest, If I was only remembered as “That Guy In Brokeback Mountain”... I'd be slurping pills too. But what I find upsetting is that this selfish fucktard couldn't stay away from the drugs and left a child without a father. Even a Dad separated from Mom because of marital strife, can still be a Dad. When you have kids, you have to knock off the BS and play it straight, because that kid is going to be watching you. Speaking of dropping dead...

Drop Dead Fred: Now that Fred Thompson is going back home, it's time for him and Romney to join forces. A Romney Thompson ticket would be solid and unbeatable... Fred needs to throw his support to Mitt and Mitt needs to make a press conference and say that he plans on asking Fred to be his running mate... done. Mitt wins, everyone else can go home. Thompson would balance Mitt's weak standing on guns... and that is the only big thing a great many folks have a problem about.  Well, that and Mitt has Gumby hair.

1-21-08:  Guns don't kill babies, Democrats do: Some more thoughts on Shoot'em Up. I was incorrect in my ID of the Beretta. I didn't look close enough. As Hordeman Douglas points out, it's a Taurus PT-99. Yes, it is a Taurus. Beretta's are not that shiny – ever. Moving on.

Now, what really bothered me about this movie... and I didn't realize it until much later. The baby. The Guns are not the most hypocritical thing in the movie. It's the baby. Now The Liberals are going on about how baby is innocent and pure... and they show the hero fighting to keep the baby in the arms of a lactating hooker, and away from the evil gun people who want to kill it. It's bad to kill babys to harvest bone marrow for cancer treatment, but it's okay to kill them for Stem Cell research. And it's okay to kill them if the Mom decides to change her mine on having a child for self esteem or “health” reasons. Or because it's Thursday. Or because it's partly cloudy. Or because you saw a cat... all valid reasons for shoving a blender into a uterus and making Fetus Smoothies.

I've never hunted before in my life: Email from the UK, James chimes in about hunting in the UK and gives us this tidbit: “...here in the UK, pursuing a deer with a rifle is known as “stalking”, not hunting. Hunting” is when you pursue your quarry (eg: fox, red deer, otter, mink) with the aid of a pack of hounds, probably on horseback.)” Stalking on the other hand, I do quite often. I'm amazed at the number of emails I got from the UK, most from Scotland. The general consensus is that it's possible, would be amazing, but is hideously expensive. Last deer tag I bought, it cost only $26 USD. So everything is expensive to me from my point of view. Legal wise, taking my gun to Scotland for the hunt would be fine... but would be a huge pain in the arse. So much so that I'd be better off using an estate gun.

McCain's success is pissing me off. McCain is a clear example of Democrats screwing with the process. This is why I don't like Open Primaries. I don't know any real conservative that likes McCain. Not one. Not even that weird guy from work.

Our friend Tasos, in Athens needs a gun dealer that can export to Greece. He's looking for 1 to 10 rifles or so. If you can or know someone who can, shoot me an email. At the same time, I need a dealer with an Import license, who can bring in a number of rifles from South Africa. These are from an estate there in South Africa for a guy that is becoming a US Citizen... these will be transferred to him so the gun stay in the family. All old classics and heirlooms.

1-20-08:  The Guns of Shoot'em Up.  The movie cover has me scratching my head. On the front, Clive Own is holding two HK USP pistols. But one looks like it's half morphed with a Desert Eagle. The frame, muzzle and trigger guard are all HK, while the side of the slide is Desert Eagle. This is one of the worst cases of Uneccessary Photoshop Hacks I've ever seen. On the back cover, it's an HK in one hand and a Beretta 92FS INOX in the other.

Is it just me, or does it look like Clive is wearing his jeans up to his chin? If I was Clive, I'd be pissed about that.

Paul Giamatti is holding some sort of stainless and synthetic bolt action rifle, of some generic photoshop sort... I can't tell what it is, and I can ID a bolt action from 500 yards away.

Seriously, some one needs to step away from the Adobe.

Now, Paul Giamatti is an interesting casting choice here. The guy is great... brilliant work. But look at some of his past roles. Santa Clause, and a Wine Taster. So Santa drinks a bunch of hooch, gets pissed, and grabs a gun. This alone is worth a rental. Add to this that Monica Bellucci is in it, with cleavage... this is a DVD Buy here. Hopefully. Time to press play:

Right off the bad we jump into dramatic carrot munching quickly followed by carrot stabbing. Clive grabs a Lorcin .380 and goes to work at one of the cheesiest shoot outs I've ever seen... while delivering a baby.

Paul Giamatti comes in to the scene armed with a Desert Eagle .44 with a brushed chrome finish.

This is like a comic book gun fight. This is not to be taken seriously.

So then a minute later, Clive drops his Beretta into a toilet... so he has to clean it. He takes it apart, blows out the water and puts it back together. But it doesn't fire because it's wet. WTF? During the battle, he has to put the gun under the hand drier. That's rather silly, but okay.

In case your wondering, 9MM bullets wont spin a merry go round. Neither will a rifle. What is more silly is the fact that Monica Bellucci's breasts become a plot element.

Now, the movie does show a good way around the Smart Gun idea... which is of course on a Glock.

Also, understand that Desert Eagles hold more than 6 rounds, and they do lock back when they are empty.

While I do find this film amusing, I also find it vile and disgusting. Much like a Larry the Cable guy routine or Democrats on CSPAN.

This brings me to my next topic... the Liberals who made the movie. Now it could have been a cheesy action movie send up like Hot Fuzz. But instead it went all political and stupid half way through and turned in to an anti-gun message.

This makes the whole movie one of the most irritatingly stupid and hypocritical wastes of film ever.  What is funny about this, is that the actors actually think this shit is something special. They are rehashing all this crap, with some of the worst dialog I've ever heard, and they think it's fresh. Just because shit stinks really bad, doesn't mean it's fresh shit. It's just stupid.

So much potential for fun cheese, spoiled. No, it doesn't rate its own page. It's not worthy.

Ruger needs to make a Top Break revolver with an auto eject. I'm talking about the Schofield revolver... Ruger needs one. Imagine one in .357 Mag or .45 Colt or .44 Mag... lots of strength, can handle modern stout louds... and be prices under 500 bucks. I'd buy a pair of them. Okay, now imagine a Ruger New Model Remington 1875. Yeah, I'd buy that too.

Mrs. Ogre and I have been talking vacation options this year. We will have enough to take the family and do a bit of travel and we were thinking Scotland. While we were looking into one of those rent a cottage for a week deals, I decided I wanted to check out some hunting opportunities. I've seen Red Stags before, but I've never even considered hunting one. Until now. Awesome animal. Like a small Elk. Beautiful animal, impressive rack... but no where near the majesty of our Rocky Mountain Elk. Still... I'd love to hunt one. Evidently there is a way to bring my own rifle there for the hunt. But I'm not familiar with the regulations are the expenses. Even without the hunting, I'd love to explore there, then around Ireland and the rest of the UK, avoiding tourist traps. I don't drink any more, but I would have to have a pint of Guinness in an Irish pub and of course sample the eats all over the place.

I've decided I am going to skip SHOT again this year. With the new baby and related expenses, there is just now way I can take off for almost a week and leave my wife with a new baby here. This kinda sucks because I'm going to miss out on whatever it is that Swarovski has up its sleeve with Remington... there is a Press Only even going on at the AFB just outside of Vegas, at there shooting range. I want to know what's up. I'd imagine a big push for the Z6 scope matched up as a package deal with a fancy Remington rifle of course. They need to pimp that Z6 scope hard because for the money it's kind of tired compared to what others are doing. Such as Leupold with their VX-7 B&C and the Zeiss Rapid-Z... then with new comers like Vortex which has taken a chunk out of Swarv's sales, and Night Force becoming THE SCOPE for serious long range shooting... Swarovski has to really pull a rabbit out of the hat here.

Speaking of Leupold, I'm still liking the European 30 scope in 4-12 I'm also liking the little Prismatic unit. It's a bit spendy, but I think I'd like it. Still haven't yet seen one in person, but I'll contact them shortly about it.

1-19-08:  A Post about Charter Arms: Quote from TheHighRoad.org, by used “Drail”: “Having carried a Charter bulldog for many years I would have to agree with Jeff Coopers description that it is a great concept poorly executed. They require loctite and regular checking to make sure all the screws are tight. Sort of like a Harley Davidson.” I laughed so hard I got hiccups. The discussion about the Charters did offer a great idea. For Ruger and/or S&W to make their own versions of the classic Bulldog. You know, that would be rather sweet. I'd like that. An SP-101 in .44 Special, or .45 Colt if they could manage. Absolutely. I would be all over that.

Rifle Scopes: I might be editing the Rifle Scopes page pretty soon. Leupold has come out with some new stuff that I've not seen before, and we got in the new 2008 catalogs. I don't remember seeing them before, but Leupold has come out with something that I think I'm liking. The new European 30. This is a simple 40MM objective, just as the VX-II, but with a nice fat 30MM tube. It's not a good looking scope... it looks kind of short and fat... but the optical clarity should be fantastic. I'm trying to get Leupold to send me one for evaluation. I'm also thinking of adding in some Red Dot sight on a separate list. And one more thing – I'm seriously considering delisting Bushnell. The only Bushnell on the list is the Elite 3200 4-12 at the $299.99 level, and its falling out of my favor.

In the news you will hear of a Virginia guy with a Utah truck running around DC with a loaded shotgun, yesterday. I assure you, I was elsewhere. I have witnesses.

Harry Reid must be slobbering mad right about now. Nevada is going Romney. So far at this time with 10% of the votes in, Romney is winning with a 55% landslide and everyone else is scrambling to hold on to 10%. Awesome. What is really interesting is that Ron Paul is doing very well in Nevada and as such I'd like to invite him to move there and run against Harry Reid and kick his pasty white sagging ass. Fred Thompson can't break 10%. and neither can the Huckster who just needs to crawl under a moving bus and die. McCain which was looking like the potential victor according to all the Media Pundits, is second place, but a very distant second. Most of the major media outlets are in a quite panic about Romney's momentum now. He's the last person the Liberals want to see win. We can expect the gloves to come off and we'll have a major push of nastiness from the Media against Mitt and the Mormons. Probably hack attack pieces that they were saving until later.
The guy to really watch out for is Obama. Media Darling doesn't quite cover it. All the Left Wing Talking Heads are lined up waiting to fellate him in interviews. He is going to be worse that what we feared Mrs. Clinton to be. Why? Because he can be. He's good looking, smart, and he has a good speaking voice. I listened to some of his speeches and the guy has a lot of pull. His talk of change and for the people... it's popular. Do not dismiss this guy... he's a major threat to our freedom and has a very strong following. If you can get out to a Democratic Caucus, vote against him. He's the last guy we want the Dems to nominate. I don't know if Mitt could beat him. President Obama looks like a real possibility.

1-17-08:  What sort of fresh hell is this? The US Government giving Mexico access to our gun database? First off, we are not supposed to have a gun database. The only database we should have about guns is one that lists guns as stolen. In that case, the database should only be used to return stolen property to the rightful owners.

I got an email from a cat writing a Sci-Fi screen play. He asked about Particle Beam Weapons: A PBW would be extremely powerful. Think of a sand blaster and how it blasts a stream of particles that can strip paint off steel instantly. Now, imagine that sand blaster was more powerful, to the point that it blasts through the steel. And now imagine that even more powerful and can blast through anything all the way out to well over 2000 meters. The Army has tested energy weapons (lasers) extensively... they found that they have a strong physical impact on the target. Earlier and less powerful lasers would burn the target like a kid holding a magnifying glass on ants. This is why ICBM missiles spin... the thought is that the spin would prevent or reduce damage. Well, they found that with more powerful lasers hit with enough force to pretty much slam the the missile like it was hit with a conventional cannon. A PBW would be even more powerful than that... and with a lot of heat. You are familiar with the sun? Plasma, what form the corona around the sun... A beam fired from a PBW would be easily that hot. Secondary fires would be ignited along the path of the beam's penetration. So you see the PBW would cause damage three ways... impact and penetration and heat.
Say you shoot a car with a PBM... the car would be penetrated clear through, in one side and out the other and whatever was on the other side would be hit too... probably over penetrated as well. Instantaneously anything flammable would be ignited. Wiring, interior materials, all that would be ignited as if tossed into a blast furnace. Fluids would be instantly turned into steam. Closed vessels would burst or explode from the heat, even if only near the beam and not hit directly by it.
Now what about a hit on a person? A shot to a leg perhaps. The penetration would be like a big hunting rifle... but the hole would be the same diameter as the beam. The tissue is actually filled with fluid, blood and water. This turns to steam instantly. The flesh and bone around the beam's hole would virtually explode from the heat causing the surrounding tissue to vaporize. So much so, that even a small diameter beam would blow the leg right off. Put a hot dog in a microwave oven and overcook it. Now imagine that happening faster than in the blink of an eye.
A hit to torso, well, there wouldn't be a torso left. There would be a big pink mist, the chunks of meat and blood would be splattered everywhere... it would be extremely gruesome and messy. Metal, like a tank... would be holed, burned and partially melted. A house would have fires all the way through... it would burn down uncontrollably.
Not only would a PBW dish out a lot of heat... but it would generate a lot of heat in the weapon. Even in the future they wouldn't be able to overcome the fact that the weapon starts to destroy its self ever time its fired. Army laser units used in trials were practically one shot deals. Not just for the energy consumption but because of heat build up in components. So a repeatable system would have to have replaceable parts... capacitors and lenses that would eject like cartridges and reload from magazines. Because they would be too hot to keep in the weapon and considering the energy used, would be tapped out with a single burst. Also because of the heat, the beam duration would be very brief, like a gun shot. But during that small amount of time, there would be a line from the weapon all the way through the target. Through open air, the moisture in the air would be vaporized, and you would have a brief vapor trail but probably nothing else. No thick red Star Wars like beam... but it wouldn't be invisible. Maybe the particles could glow, most likely a yellow or white... but whatever would look better on the screen is fine.

A small PBW would be big... like a large machine gun with cables going to a power pack and cooling system. You wouldn't have a PBW small enough to hide in a pocket... maybe a small laser, but not a PBW.
A PBW would also be loud. A different sound from a gun shot, and not as loud... a thunder like crack from the vaporizing moisture in the air... a buzzing sound from the weapon, and the sound of the target being destroyed, vaporized, and burned... and of course secondary sounds from bursting vessels, organs, and splattering sounds.

The only thing that is going to stop a PBW beam would be the eventual dissipation or absorption of energy. So a small PBW would thrash one or two cars, or a building.. Maybe a couple small houses depending on what was in them... You would only need one shot to destroy most targets. Bigger weapons could be rapid fire systems, but the would be steaming with excess heat after a few bursts.

Considering there is no real PBW's and we have no real idea what the future holds in terms of technologies and possibilities... Anything goes.

Got another good question. A young man wants his first gun and is thinking about a .22 rifle. Such thoughts show that the kid has a good head on his shoulders. I know any Gun Nut could have a different opinion on the subject, but here is my answer: “A first rifle?  No gun experience?  Absolutely a .22.  And luckily the best option for that is not expensive: The CZ 452 LUX. Once you have mastered this... then put a scope on it and learn that. Once you've got that down... You're ready for any rifle. CHEERS! GH

I was going to post a video gun review today, but it didn't work out... soon.  So here is a different video.

1-16-08:  Charter Arms. The latest issue of Concealed Carry Magazine has come out. My Charter review is in there. I don't think Charter is going to be happy with it... but then again, maybe Charter shouldn't have sent me such crap. Here are two pictures for you to examine... judge for yourself. There is a thread on THR about Charter Arms, so check it out and post your take.

Mitt now has 2 Gold's and 2 Silvers. Mitt looks like the winner overall now. Where are all those pundits that was saying Mitt needs to drop out? The guys that need to drop out are Ron Paul and Fred Thompson, who have virtually no traction anymore. But still, it's too early to tell, but it's looking very good for Mitt Romney. I was listening to a little news this morning on the radio. No mention of the last night's results. No mention of Mitt Romney at all. I looked around the internet and there is hardly any mention at all. Fox News had nothing... front page had a cartoon Spiderman picture from the 70's and I had to search around and click a few links to find anything about Mitt at all. Mitt is in a Media Blackout. Digg had nothing, but they did have a link to a story about Huckster. Why is this? Because Mitt is the last person the Liberal Media wants to win. What was on the news radio this morning, instead of talking about Mitt's win, was the recession that America is heading for. If we are going into a recession, which candidate is going to be the best at getting us back on top? Unless we have a powerful economy, how can we have a powerful Military? How can we have a strong nation? How can we accomplish anything? We can't. We have to get our economy straightened out. I know a lot of well respected Bloggers have said that they would never vote for Romney. This is unfortunate, because if he is the Nominee, not voting for him would be voting for whoever the Democrat is. All three of the top Dems have said they will effect another AWB... or Assault Weapons Ban. If you look at the legislation for the AWB II bill... it's not just banning assault weapons and funky cosmetic features... it closes all those loop holes like grinding off the bayonet lugs. It goes for the throat and bans everything. Your Good Old 870 Remington, your good old Remington 700, and everything. I hear every day people saying they are wanting to buy an AR-15 because they would be the first to go. No, they are not... ALL OF THEM will go. The Dems want us to be completely unarmed. And if that happens, MadOgre.com will not be a Gun Blog any more, but a Blog about pointy sticks and how best to make them pointier. The Democrats, with their push to disarm Honest Americans, and with their Communist agenda, are the greatest threat to this country next to Russia, China, and Al Qaeda.

Right here. This is why I want a Romney-Thompson ticket for the 08 Generals. Thompson might not have traction to reach the White House, but he's a good man and a guy that would make the PERFECT Vice President.

One of the key factors to getting out economy sorted, is to get our Oil sorted out. With oil prices up, that makes fuel prices up, and everything in our nation is transported and that transportation requires that expensive fuel, and that makes everything more expensive. How do we get out oil under control? We tap our own oil sources. We have oil in the Gulf... but because of environmental wacko's getting in the way, we can't get it. But China and Cuba can... and are. They are sucking our oil and we are not doing a damn thing about it. If I was the President, SEALs would take care of that overnight. All in one night. Done. Alaska. Canada. Let's get rid of Chavez in Venezuela, and make deals with a new government. Make some better deals with Mexico. We need to use our oil and screw OPEC. Those Sultans are getting unbelievably rich while we are going broke sitting on top of our own oil. Most of our oil is in what is called Oil Shale. We are not even bothering to seriously try to develop Oil Shale. For the same amount of oil that it takes to refine to gasoline, we could get more than twice as much Diesel fuel. The American Auto Industry needs to push some diesel powered vehicles other than big ass trucks. Small oil burners are popular in Europe and the UK, but not in the US.... Not only does it take less oil to refine that fuel, cars get more miles out of it and the engines last more than twice as long. It's insane that we as a nation have not hopped all over Diesel.

Selling SIG: A customer came in the other day wanting to check the price on transferring a SIG P250 that they wanted to order from another dealer who was a “friend” and was giving them such a great deal. We suggested that she take a look at what we were selling ours for. She was surprised to find that ours was so much lower. So much for that friendly deal. She had to call her boyfriend, who was upset now. He had already paid for the SIG and the “friend” wont refund the money. Considerable money would have been saved if they had come seen me first. How much? 80 bucks. On top of that, she's going to be paying for the shipping overnight air, and our transfer fee. Ouch. With “friends” like that. Watch out for guys who are saying they'll give you a good deal... and go to where you know you are getting a good deal. The best way to buy a gun, not just for you, but for everyone in the long run, is to buy your guns from your local dealers where you get to know them, they get to know you, and you build that relationship. Because when you do, your local dealer will go out of their way to help you. Maybe a free box of shells, maybe a phone call when a certain sweet item that you've been wanting comes in. We keep our customers in mind and we try to look out for them... because we know them. They are our friends and our shooting buddies. You are not going to get that if you buy your guns from big anti-gun joints like Wal-Mart who only sell guns because it's a product that they can move and would be perfectly happy to sell you Chinese made shit instead. Back to this unfortunate customer who is stuck paying more for the gun from another dealer.... they learned a lesson the hard way. They know who to talk to first now. I counted how many guys drive out from SLC to buy their guns from us.... just this week alone. Well, I'm not going to give out a number, I don't want hurt feel bads, but the number is significant. We sell enough guns to out of towners alone that would make another dealer a nice flowing business. Why is that? We have one of the best selections in the western states, but that's not it... It comes down to service. Our guys know what they are talking about because we all use the products we are selling. Our guys know how to set them up, how they work, why, and will teach a customer right then and their how to strip and clean the gun, work the locks, levers and safeties... all that. As soon as it gets warmer, we will be teaching them how to zero them, use them, and get the most out of them. Everything.

I'm jealous of FBMG's move to new digs that have a nice big fat indoor range... that's awesome. But our out door range goes to over 1000 yards, five 4 wall tactical ranges, and enough room to accommodate classes of any size. Let me say that again... any size. Well, the down side is that it's open air so while it's well ventilated, you do have weather to deal with. Right now, it can get a wee bit nippy. In the peak heat of the summer... Judas! Bring your water bottles.

Of course all of them means nothing if we get a Democrat in the White House. We have to fight for our Gun Culture... our Gun Industry... and our Gun Rights. Go here and sign this petition. This is by fellow Virginian and Congressman Eric Cantor. A good fellow who supports our gun rights. We need more like him in our Government. You Virginians, make sure he stays in Office.... and everyone else? Make sure you put guys like him in all the other offices!

1-14-08:  Hold on to your skulls, because this just might make them explode. Before you click the following link, I recommend wrapping your head in duct tape and popping a few pain killers... Are you ready? Read This. Paul Clement is a titanic idiot. “Given the unquestionable threat to public safety that unrestricted private firearm possession would entail, various categories of firearm-related regulation are permitted by the 2nd Amendment," he wrote in the brief...” Paul, you are so wrong on every level. The 2nd A doesn't permit any regulation. It says in language that is not even questionable, “... shall not be infringed.” Regulation is Infringement. Anyone who seeks to infringe, is an enemy of the American People. Paul Clement should be arrested and tried for treason. Along with a great many other people, but let's start with Paul Clement right now. We can cuff the rest tomorrow. What is it about these morons that they are born so dense that they can't even grasp such simple logic and proven facts... Guns Don't Cause Crime. More guns means less crime, every time it's tried. But these peoples persist in their fairy tales that if they can get rid of guns they can get rid of crime. It doesn't work that way. So why are they really trying to get rid of guns? They want to disarm us so they can have total unrestricted power over The People. Simple as that. When America is disarmed, America will cease to be. What will remain will be the hollowed out shell of the US Flag wrapped around a big bloated socialist state. We would might as well be Chinese. We need to fight this at every step. We need to fight this at every level. I can't even talk about this anymore... I'm too pissed off. Luckily one of The Horde as sent us his take:

When I first saw this headline, I prayed that someone had misread something and fouled up the title, but after reading it, my hopes of misinterpretation were shattered. The White House, and President Bush, who has sworn to protect the United States Constitution, has endorsed the idea that the second amendment does not protect the right to bear arms of individuals. Apparently, the phrase "shall not be infringed" means that the government can regulate possession of firearms in order to protect us from ourselves. Now, I can accept "some" restrictions on gun ownership. I can understand a felon who has been convicted of a violent crime having their constitutional right revoked. I can understand people who have restraining orders against them not being permitted to own a firearms. I do not agree with the idea that people who are "mentally ill" are prohibited from owning firearms, because in today's society, that term is one which is far too broadly applicable. I think that any law which limits the ability of a law-abiding citizen to own and/or carry a firearm is patently unconstitutional. The solicitor general writes: "Given the unquestionable threat to public safety that unrestricted private firearm possession would entail, various categories of firearm-related regulation are permitted by the 2nd Amendment."  Nowhere in the second amendment does it state "the federal government can invalidate this amendment if it thinks people are 'threatened' by ownership. I sincerely believe that the second amendment is the most important of all the amendments, because without the threat of reaction by the people of the country to acts of tyranny by the government (federal or state), the other rights outlined in our Constitution are subject to limitation and eradication by the government. This is why we must not have a Democrat elected in November. Of the Republican candidates, Romney is weak on gun rights, but is otherwise a good choice. Ron Paul is insane...I'll leave it at that. Giuliani, from what I've read, seems to be in favor of letting the states decide on guns...bad choice, as many states don't mind tearing up the Bill of Rights for the sake of expedience. Otherwise, he's a reasonable choice. Huckabee sounds like a conservative, but his record seems to indicate otherwise. Fred Thompson is the ideal candidate in my eyes. He espouses the idea that the Constitution can not be infringed upon by the government, is socially, fiscally, and militarily conservative. The big problem with Fred is that he isn't going after votes like he needs to be doing. I just wanted to send you the link to this story of the trampling of the Constitution. We all need to take a stand on our liberties and refuse to allow any more erosion of our rights. Stephen”

Amen, Stephen.

Speaking of guns, I had no choice but to put another one on layaway. I am of course talking about the Ruger Single Six that I've been talking about. I checked out all the Single Sixes carefully and the one I had my eye on was indeed the slickest in action and trigger. So I put it on layaway to make sure it was out of inventory and in my name. No one can get my gun now. Bwah ha ha ha – Mine is an evil laugh. Making the cylinder a different color is not a real concern. Being able to crack off 6 rapid and accurate shots of .22 CB Shorts... well, that has Grin Factory written all over it.

Another Gun I need to talk about is the SIG 556. Take the lower from an AR-15, with all it's great ergonomics and familiarity, fit it to work with an AK style bolt and an FAL style gas system... it's the best bits of the best out there. In terms of reliability and stability... it's right up there. In terms of ease of use, if you can run an AR, you can run the SIG. I've looked at, handled, fired, and generally larked about with a lot of different rifles. One of the advantages of being 11B at Ft. Benning... since those days, I've been able to get behind the trigger of a lot of other rifles too... I'm dead serious when I say that it's one of the best rifles ever made. The only thing that I could think of to improve the 556 would be to improve the caliber. But even with the anemic .223 caliber, there are advantages. Cost of ammunition remains low at 18.99 for a box of 50. This makes the Cost Of Business practically nothing for Coyote Hunting. It makes it actually doable to go out and just blast through a box of shells for simple gun-fun. Cheap blasting with one of the finest rifles ever made.  It doesn't get better that that.  The SIG 556 really does make the AR-15 look silly. I've said it before, and I'll say it again, the 556 is fantastic.  Get one while you still can.

I really don't understand how so many Republicans who say they are Conservative are voting for McCain. Are they suffering from Fragile X Syndrome? McCain is not conservative and is not even Republican save for the fact the GOP gives him money. McCain is the best Democrat the DNC ever had. He's worked against just about every conservative legislation worked on in the last few decades... he's a Socialist and he's an Anti-Constitutionalist. He is the worst choice out of the lot. Which is why he's doing so well in the polls. McCain is getting a lot of votes from people who are Liberal who are just wanting to keep Romney out of office, because Romney is the one THEY do not want in office, because Romney really is Conservative. They wouldn't bee too opposed to McCain... he's one of THEM. He sickens me. Look, I don't think his Tour of Duty in a POW Camp makes him qualified to do a tour of duty in the White House. I appreciate his service and his sacrifice, I truly do. But the man needs to retire to an Alpaca Farm.  He has no concept of how to help this nation economically.  None at all.  If you want higher taxes and less money in your pocket and China owning more of us... then vote McCain.

The elegant Mrs. DuToit has posted about Torture Porn, or as Hollywood calls it, Horror Films. Read it here. Now, I love a good horror film. But I have to agree here that the new direction Hollywood has taken is disturbing and uncomfortable... it is not scary. It is not Horror. It is just simulated gore for the sake of gore. I like movies that are SCARY. Like Event Horrizon, The Exorcist, The Omen, The Changeling, Alien, The Thing... and others... These are the classics. Not all new Horror is Torture Porn... and it's not all crap either. Some are very good... I liked the 28 Days Later and 28 Weeks Later... there was some gruesome bits to it, but really it was a thrilling scare fest. Very good. Then there was The Grudge and The Ring and Pulse... Wait a second... did you see that? Do you see a pattern here? 28 days and weeks are British, The Grudge and The Ring and Pulse are remakes of Japanese Horror Flicks. Wait a second. When was the last time we had a great American horror flick? I don't know. That's a good question. I have no answer to that. I like my horror movies to be scary, not chunky. I like it to be cerebral and less arterial. Devil's Backbone is another good example... and yet again, made in Spain, in Spanish. I am Legend is not horror. The book is more of a thriller and the movie is an action drama. Then there was 30 Days of Night, which I liked... but more an action flick than a horror flick. A real horror flick will keep you up at night, with the lights on. It will wake you up suddenly, out of a dead sleep and you realize you are trying to crawl backwards up a wall... you know what? Only one movie has really done that for me. There are two kinds of people in the world of scary movies... those of you who have seen EVENT HORRIZON in the theatre, and those that have seen it on the TV were it was safe and contained in the little box. If you haven't seen it in the theatre, then you've not seen it. It took a solid week before I got over it.

DO YOU SEE?!” Judas Priest... it damn near made me shit myself.

Emails about the .260 Remington:Yep, I think you and I have talked about this before. (back about last Aug., I think) I've been thinking about this recently too and have come to the conclusion that in addition to the .260 Rem or the 7mm-08 being a great combat rifle ctg, how about the .338 Fed or .358 Win. being an alternate chambering for the M240 GPMG( since they're both based on the .308 and conversion would only be a matter of barrel change) no need to change the links or feed tray cover, feed pawl nor any other parts, just the barrel, maybe the recoil spring if one was firing some rather heavy projectiles.... That would be one hell of a barrier breaker/ road block weapon for when the military needs something a bit more stout than .308 but infinitely more portable than trying to tote an M2 Browning over the Hindu-Kush or some other prehistoric shit hole. Damn, this would give some great flexibility to an already great weapon, or how about this being available in the rather new Mk48 SAW? Oh! about your pecker.....yeah, I get the humor, but dammit man, 6 kids? Holster that thing before someone gets hurt!!! - Todd

That's not a bad idea, Todd.  I like the .338 Federal, and I think it would be ideal in the roll of a Spec Ops rifle for use with a suppressor.   In that function, it becomes ideal as it suppresses very well.   .358 Win has too much recoil and a Nerf like trajectory.  The .260 would be able to do GPMG duty very well as it penetrates barriers like a laser thanks to it's very high sectional density and velocity. Anything on the other side of the barrier would be buzz-sawed and spalled to death given the extra length of the 6.5MM slug at 120 grains or more.

I can't help it. I'm a sexual Tyrannosaur.

Another .260 Email: Mr Hill, I find your idea of the 260 remington being an ideal combat round rather ironic; not ironic that you are right, but ironic that you are recommending a round that is so similar to the 6.5x55 Swede, a cartridge OLDER than the .30-30. Had the 6.5x55 and its bolt action mauser replaced the single shot 45-70 instead of the rimmed 30-40 krag and its jorgensen rifle, we never would have needed to develop the 30-06, the 308 win or the 5.56 combat rounds. The 30-06 was created to make up for deficiencies in the 30-40 krag, the 308 was just more of the same in a smaller package, and the 5.56 was supposed to be a low recoil replacement for the .30s. Had we started with the 6.5 from the get go, we would have had a low recoil, long distance combat round from the get go. - Mende

The Army has done a lot of rather dumb things in the past based on faulty logic. Like adopting certain rifles for the only reason that it has a slower firing rate so the soldiers will conserve ammo... that worked out real well. Moving from the .45 to the .38, then back to the .38 in the form of the 9MM, and now they want to go back to the .45 again... I do not think they will ever learn. And you are exactly spot on. Had we adopted the 6.5X55 Swede, we wouldn't be having this conversation now and a lot of our soldiers wouldn't have died in Vietnam due to a silly, faulty, self cleaning (that's what they called it at first) glorified .22 Magnum. The Swede is a very good cartridge, and the .260 is pretty much just an Akley Improved version of it. (Well, it's taller and broader through the shoulders... oh never mind, you get my drift.)

Chrome Plating: “Your large cock blurb reminds me of a line from Predator when the guy with the mini gun (you know the ex wrestler/governor of Minnesota) can't get anyone to share his snuff - he calls them " a bunch of slack jawed faggots.  This stuff will make you into a sexual Tyrannosaurus.  Just like me!"  Funny! Also, for that two tone revolver - get matte chrome plated on the cylinder already.  Send it to Alpha Precision (Jim Stroh) for the work.  He is the greatest. Eat your salad! Best, Tim

I had thought of that before, Tim. It is a simple solution to an essentially trivial problem, but it's not the best solution. The cylinder would not take long before it developed a ring around the rear portion as the latch drags around it. This happens on all revolvers and on a chrome plated one, the ring would look dark and nasty. After a couple years it would look like crap.

Tyrannosaurs, especially Ogerish ones - don't eat much salad unless it's garnished with something... like London Broil.

We are very pleased that FBMG is finally moving to some decent digs. The location where they are now is just awful. Yet in spite of that handicap, they have done very well. Moving to a better location would allow them to really get serious and with added space and the indoor ranges... they will be a force to be reckoned with. The location where they are still at treated them like unwanted step children from what I gathered... having their own parting spaces will be a luxury.

I am going to be doing another gun review article this week. For Concealed Carry Magazine, but while I do that, I have a little surprise for MadOgre.com readers. Something many of you have requested, and I've said I would do. It will probably go up Thursday if all goes well. So buckle up, and stay tuned.

1-13-08:  I've been doing a lot of research into military cartridges and what would be the absolute best for our Armed Forces. Getting past the platform issues and looking at just the cartridge and its ballistic capability and limitations. I will not bother showing the math, as anyone can look up ballistic data and run a ballistic calculator. In terms of trajectory, sectional density, ballistic coefficients, velocity... and what those factors would mean for a soldier in the field, fighting the type of warfare that we are fighting now and possibly in the future... the best cartridge is not the .223/5.56MM and it's not the good old .308 either. The new 6.5 Grendel is certainly better than 6.8 SPC, but it too is not satisfactory... but the 6.5 diameter is. The 6.5 needs more horsepower behind in that it can not get from the .223 length case. I've come to the opinion that the ideal cartridge would be the .260 Remington. This will require an action that would be suitable for .308 of course, since the .260 is a .308 necked down to 6.5MM. This is a popular wildcat round in predator hunting circles, and Remington legitimized the concept by making it a factory loaded cartridge and going even further by offering rifles in it. DPMS, DSA and others also offer rifles for it. I was thinking that a DSA SA 58 would be great, or the FNH SCAR-H... but considering the .260 gets full performance out of a 24 inch barrel, a bullpup configuration would be ideal. So I've said it, let it be written, let it be done. Anyone who disagrees is a nappy-headed poofter.

Over at Curmudgeonly & Skeptical, a daily read, I had noticed the new banner. But it wasn't until late in the night when I actually looked it over. I was pleasantly surprised to find myself there. There I am, in the company of other bloggers and Ronald Reagan. Golf claps all around. Well done, sir. But what really caught my attention was the roll over pic of Chuck Schumer looking at his crotch. If you roll your mouse over that image, you get the pop-up of another picture... Dems pouring kerosene on a pile of guns to burn them. Now the Dems always talk of only banning evil assault guns.... but look at that picture closely. I see a couple SKS rifles, but that's it for potentially evil guns. What I see a lot of is hunting rifles, a lever action, an Over Under shotgun that even John Kerry has been photographed using... and a pellet rifle. Don't believe a word the Dems say about Gun Control. Those socialists want all our guns, every single one of them, because when they have all the guns they will have all the control. That's what it is all about. They don't care about violence or safety. Remember it was under Bill Clinton that Janet Reno ordered the assaults at Waco and Ruby Ridge.

Yes, I know we have had the recent issue of a SWAT team busting into the home of a family, throwing the parents down to the ground and cuffing them... so they could take a boy to see a doctor. I know... but if it was Janet Reno in charge, the family would have been shot to bits. The little Cuban boy was lucky to have gotten out alive, even if he did get stuck in Cuba as a result.

Kahr Arms: I was asked about several different versions of Kahr Arms pistols, especially the .45 versions. There is no question about them guys, the guns are good. They are very good. For CCW they are all fantastic. Our friend Ben is getting very close to buying a CW45 and my own mother is getting or has got already a CW9... Looking at the CW 9 and the CW 45 the .45 version is a little bit bigger all the way around, but not that much bigger. The triggers are all good, the guns are reliable and accurate... what's more to want from it? Night sights? You can get that. I don't know if a Kahr is really my bag, I like the 1911 platform myself, but the Kahrs are very good and I'd not be bothered if I had to pack one on an assignment. There are gunsmiths out there that are doing some good work tweaking the Kahrs and making them even better. If you like the Kahr, any Kahr, then go for it.

1-12-08:  Emails from The Horde: Hi George, I love your writing, you are the man when it comes to guns and stuff. That Coyote blog is the shit too! As far as Ruger is concerned, I think they are absolute dogshit! I should spell it with caps because I think just about everything they make is a club. I have owned numerous Rugers in the past and damned if they don't weigh a ton with a shitty trigger to boost. Give me a Mauser or a Steyer and I  am a happy guy, I just can't get into American arms anymore. Call me funny. I remember your posts about the CZ 7.62 x 39, now that got me going because I love CZ and most of the European arms makers. Anyway, keep up the good writing, I read your stuff everyday as I have for several years now. The last time I contacted you was your post regarding calibers for African animals and I wrote back confirming the absolute lethality of the .308 as I had killed about 10 animals with it. Best of luck to you and your family (especially the new baby boy!) I had one myself 5 months ago, God tells us he loves us by our children. Take care and keep it coming. Adam.

Thanks for the email Adam. I agree with you about Ruger on most of their guns, but their revolvers are very good in my opinion... their Single Six's are the cat's meow when it comes to .22 revolvers. The Vaquero is the best Peace Maker that ever was – I know, that's heresy to say – but being able to load and carry all 6 safely, I don't care what the Colt Fanboys say, that's a huge improvement over the original design. I just wish they made the New Vaquero in .44 Mag. Just stretch the frame and cylinder a little. I love my .357, always will, but I still want a .44 Mag.

Another email, regarding Ruger again:George, Ruger will not do custom work. They don't see value in a S&W custom shop operation. That being said, they will do work lots of guns for distributors try Lipseys or their competition. I have been told they will run as few as 500 guns. Good luck! Geoff. Who might just be in the market for a new Single six.

I have found one Single Six that is in especially slick condition... it's BNIB and has the best feeling action that I've felt on any factory Single Six. The pistol is all black, and is actually the same I just photoed the other day with the stainless cylinder. I'm going to pull it aside and save it for my birthday. I'll buy it at the end of March. If I wait for my family to get it for me, I'll never get one, and especially not this one.

Email about my meat: Hey George, Good God man! The last thing I ever expected to read on your blog was you talking about your big meaty cock. I have to admit, I thought you had flipped your lid. Then I had to control myself from spitting my coffee all over my laptop once I finally realized what your point was. That had me laughing. Ok on to the serious stuff. Are the mythic gods real and are they among us? Hillary Klinton the shapeshifting temptress? One minute she is the Ice Queen, the next she lets her voice crack and suddenly she is appealing to even more idiots? Obama, the silver tounged deceaver? Unfortunately, I can't recall the names and histories behind some of the mythics. Maybe you can help put some names here. On the other hand, we just may have the harlot and the anti-christ. Probably not yet, but damn we are close. We are being led to dark times by the idiots among us. God help us this next election. Take care, Jesse

LOL, I'm glad someone found the humor that I intended when I wrote that bit. The emails about all this stuff could drive a man to question his manhood. I know my problem is shared by most MadOgre.com readers, so I know you guys totally understand where I'm coming from.

Hillary isn't one of the mythic Gods... She's a Gorgon. She just doesn't have the snakes for hair. I don't know what it is, but every “Hillary” I've ever known has been a gigantic bitch that needs a swift slap across the face. So as soon as first learned of that Clinton woman, that was my initial reaction. I've never had the impression that I've been wrong about that.

1-11-08:  The new Remington 2008 catalog came out and we got a bunch today. There are some very nice new guns.... one in particular that I like is the the 700 LSS... It's a stainless 700 with a grey laminate stock, chambered in – get this - .257 Weatherby Magnum. Hot Dog! Remington listened to me, and they built it, exactly as I wanted it. And you can buy it too. Now you have to buy them only through Remington Premiere Dealers, and considering that we are a full line Remington power seller, I think we qualify, but I don't know. I'll have to check into that.  They have a lot of other good stuff too, and I'll be talking about them later on... I like how they are really pushing their specialty shotguns.. they have some awesome shotties going on.

Two Tone Rugers: So I called up Ruger to ask about a Super Blackhawk and a Single Six, both blue with stainless cylinders. No, they can't do that, because that constitutes a custom gun. Even if it only means pulling a part from a different bin and assembling the gun as normal, that's too much for them... they can't do it. They can't even think about it. It's as if the employees are autistic and even thinking about it would make the guys on the factory floor sit down and rock back and forth until it's time to go home. They just can't do it. However, it would be possible to buy the guns, and then later buy cylinders and have a custom gunsmith fit them and tune them... at 4 times the cost and not from Ruger directly. Nice. That just doesn't work for me. Which is too bad, because it looks sharp as all get out.  If they could have done it, I'd have placed my order for both right then and there..

I have a big meaty cock. No, seriously, I'm hung like a friggin horse. Ask my wife. I'm huge. Too huge... like birth defect huge. Like a radioactive mutation. Mrs Ogre has given birth to 6 full sized boys, and I'm still too big for her to go all the way in. It's a problem. She can't give it to me orally, because it kills her jaw. So why do I get spam for Male Enhancement? I got dozens of emails about small penises over the last two days. Some one must have put me on some list. I think it's funny... I couldn't imagine what she would do if I actually did get bigger. Good hell... she would be impaled to death on my meat pole. She wants to slap Smiling Bob. So, please, you makers of Viagra and Enzyte, stop. You are trying to kill my wife.

Gout. It's back with a vengeance in my right foot. The ailment of Ben Franklin has afflicted me greatly. I eat too much beef and don't drink enough water. I'm going to have to have a word with God about this when I eventually get Up There to see him. We have canine teeth for a reason and I don't need some pencil neck doctor telling me to eat salads. I can enjoy a salad on occasion, but get real. A man needs a steak to go with that salad!.

1-9-08:  Our friend Preacherman from TheHighRoad.Org has opened the door on his own blog - and has started out with a very serious story. Go there, right now and read about the credit card company SNAFU. Citi Merchant is refusing to process credit card transactions between FFL dealers. This is bullshit and can damage our industry. The call for protest is a little weak in this case... the proper action here is a huge freaking law suit. Class action with all FFL Dealers and all companies that have any SHOT SHOW connections getting on board and litigate the shit out of Citi Merchant. That's just the way I see it. No playing around. Litigate NOW. Because of the politically motivated actions of this company can hamper the business of an entire industry. That can not stand.

The Daily Coyote: The author posted a photo of herself. I never bothered looking at her About page... I was too interested in the Coyote considering it is the prey I hunt most often. Now, I don't want to come off as sexist or disrespectful... or like The Todd from Scrubs... but she is not what I was expecting. She's cute as hell! I was expecting a weird old cat lady. Wow. Cowgirls work for me... that's all I'm saying. Woof!

SIG P250 Compact: We go in a new pistol the other day. While I was stuck in the snow. It's the new SIG P250 in 9MM with a two tone finish and night sights. At first I thought it was ugly and too expensive. But then I looked at it closely. It feels very good in the hand and it has an excellent DAO trigger. The price which is a chunk over six hundred isn't bad at all when you consider it has night sights. The gun has an interesting modular system that allows you to easily pull out the serialized trigger group from the grip frame, which has no serial... this means you can pop it in to a full sized frame, or different caliber, you can change all sorts of stuff. With the features you are getting, and the night sights, it's about the same as the M&P or XD if you put night sights on them. So it's not bad. However those guns are not the P250's competitor. The P250's only real rival is the HK P2000 or the FNH P9/P40. I don't like the HK as much as it feels bulkier, with all the added Teutonic Legend and Mythology... And the FNH pistols are now coming with a total of 3 mags with the XD-Like holster and mag pouch... That makes the FNH a very good deal for a very good pistol. It's one of the more under rated handguns out there. FN is more known for their silly Five-seveN pistol and their P90 SMG... but the P9 and the P40 pistols are very good. Right up there. I think I like them a little more than P250, but the new SIG is very nice, I wouldn't mind buying one myself. But I wont, because my P-01 has spoiled me and if I was going to buy a poly-gun, the M&P has my vote.

3:10 to Yuma: Just finished watching this flick and I was impressed. A western chase film that was very well done. Not perfect, I could nit pick the thing to death but when you do that, you lose appreciation of the overall feature and it just takes all the fun out of it. I enjoyed it and I think it reinforces my opinion that Christian Bale is one of the most under rated, yet best actors in Hollywood. Russel Crow did a good job but only really acted in a couple scenes... but when he did, it was outstanding. My man CB though was solid all the way through and through. He just might be the best actor there is right now, when you take in all his works and you look at the subtlety he can deliver. Crow only delivered the same intensity in one scene... at the very end just before he blew away his gang. Only at that moment did you feel the character.

.308 vs .30-06: There is a lot of chest beating on interweb argument forums about these two cartridges. Usually posts are all anecdotal and have more noise than signal. Let's look at the cold hard numbers.

First, let's look at the .308. Looking at an average load for that, let's take a 165 grain BTSP load from Hornady. I'm taking the information right off Hornady's web site, so there is no bias here.

.308 Win. 165 gr. BTSP. Velocity (fps) / Energy (ft-lbs)
Muzzle 100 yd 200 yd 300 yd 400 yd 500 yd
2700/2670 2496/2282 2301/1939 2115/1638 1937/1375 1770/1147
Trajectory (inches)
Muzzle 100 yd 200 yd 300 yd 400 yd 500 yd
-1.50 2.00 0.00 -8.60 -25.10 -50.80

That's not bad at all. Now lets look at the .30-06 with the same bullet:

.30-06 Springfield, 165 gr. BTSP. Velocity (fps) / Energy (ft-lbs)
Muzzle 100 yd 200 yd 300 yd 400 yd 500 yd
2800/2872 2591/2460 2392/2096 2202/1776 2020/1495 1848/1251
Trajectory (inches)
Muzzle 100 yd 200 yd 300 yd 400 yd 500 yd
-1.50 1.80 0.00 -7.90 -23.00 -46.70

Undoubtedly the .30-06 has an edge on the .308. The Aught Six is faster and flatter. At 500 yards there is 4 inches less drop. Not significant, but there could be enough of a difference to make a clean and ethical kill, or a wounding. But if the shooter knows his gun, knows his loads, and is ethical... he'll make the kill with little problem. Really there is not enough difference to really matter... but the Aught Six clearly wins. Doesn't matter if you win by an inch or by a mile... there is a first place and there are losers. The .30-06 is a winner.

The real question is accuracy. Which can shoot the tightest groups. Again, all the arguments are anecdotal. I'm of the opinion that dollar for dollar – you build the exact same rifle with the exact same scope in each caliber... shooting the same bullet. I don't think you will find any difference in the size of the shot groups. I think the accuracy will be the same.  When you look at the .308 sniper rifles out there, you see some really advanced stuff.  Special scopes, special stocks, tweaked bedding and barrels... they spend a ton of money on those .308's to make them shoot.  What would happen if you spend that much money on an .30-06?  You would have some crazy good shooting Aught Sixes..

This isn't a win for the Aught Six here... but it is an answer to the chest beating to all those guys who think .308 is so bloody accurate and that's why all the snipers use it. No... All the snipers use for one of two reasons. 1, is legacy... meaning armories are full of .308 rifles and have tons of cases of rounds for .308. And 2, is the Jones's. Everyone else has it, so it must be good, so that's what we are going to use. Special Forces is now using .300 Win Mag more often and the US Secret Service, they use the 7MM Rem Mag.

Look, I don't give a damn what you want to use... as long as you know how to use it. I would also be well pleased if you think about something objectively, with a clear and open mind, taking in all variables, and filtering out all the bullshit. Don't follow what someone else uses. Make your own decision based on the facts as you see it. One of the most irritating things I hear at the Gun Counter, other than eye rolling liberals making anti-gun comment... is when a guy has to see the same exact freaking gun “his buddy” has. Do you buy the same truck and the same underwear as your buddy? You both hunting on Brokeback Mountain together? Buy your own gun. Your buddy might not know as much as you think.

Smuggness. Imagine how smug all the Quarter Bore fans are going to be if the Army adopts the 6.5 Grendel. Then imagine all the smug we'll get from the .270 crowd if the 6.8 SPC gets selected. I feel like a third party guy here all the sudden, but I really like 7MM.

McCain won NH... so what? Amazing. So Huck won one, Cain won one, and Romney has won one. But in each state Romney didn't take first, he took second. He's doing very well I must say. He remains the most electable. Fred Thompson has dropped off the radar, and Ron Paul doesn't even know where the radar is. At least so far. Other states might give us some different results... but so far it looks like this is going to be a Romney race. Can you imagine the surge Romney would get if he just looked into the camera and said “I swear to God, I will not allow any gun bans while I am President.”

1-7-08:  Some of the top rifle choices for the military are the FN SCAR rifle, XM8, SIG 556, and the XCR. Here is some further enlightment for you guys that are not quite familiar with each one. I have to say that while each one is a huge improvement over the M-16 system... the XM8 is my least favorite.

SCAR RIFLE:

XM8:

SIG 556:

XCR:

Now here is something I'd rather see the US Army adopt:  The RFB Carbine from Kel-Tec in .308, the way Ogre likes it. Check this out:

1-6-08: Political Observation: I watched the Candidate Forum on Fox last night. After listing to what each candidate has said... I'm coming back to Mitt Romney. Fred Thompson is good when he's awake and reading lines, Mc Cain is a short angry cock, Hickabee needs to put the bible down and stop fixating on Romney... Ghouliani needs to just go away now. Looking at each one objectively and looking at which one would beat the Democrat in the race... there is only one choice. Romney. You put Romney up against any of the Dems, and Romney wins. You put up any of the other Candidates and Fred is electable against all save Obama. I think Obama would beat him. The others would be through and through trounced. Only Romney is going to keep the Dems out of the white house.

Israel's Tavor Rifle. Some of The Horde and I have been exchanging emails about other rifles... such as the SIG 556 and the RobArms XCR.... Looking at the other nations weapons, we are well familiar with most of them. We see Mexico has adopted a new rifle, which is a sister rifle to America's XM-8. Which is in turn a daughter rifle of the HK G-36. A lot of rifles are based on the same system the G-36 uses... which was in turn a development of the AR-18's action. The TAVOR from Israel takes a completely different approach. It uses the bullpup configuration to put the action behind the trigger. Bullpups can be more awkward to the untrained, but when you practice with it, you get used to it. Any reduction in speed of reloads, is more than made up for by being shorter and overall more compact.

The TAVOR is not perfect. It has two handicaps in my opinion. First is the caliber. Again, I don't think a fighting rifle should use something that hits harder than a squirrel rifle. That's just my opinion, but I firmly believe that our fighting rifles should be able to penetrate barriers and carry killing power all the way to 1000 yards. Moving on, the second handicap is the use of GI style M-16 magazines. There is nothing wrong with the M-16 Style of mag in terms of shape and latch location... it works well. But the TAVOR is using spare mags from the M-16 inventory... the cheap aluminum mags that tent to be easily damaged. Just the slightest ding to the lips of the GI mag will cause failures to feed. The followers have been problematic until you switch to the new green followers... and even then it's so-so. It works but not exactly confidence inspiring. The new poly made M-16 style magazines work much better, last longer, and are just stronger mags all the way around. While I'm not really a fan of plastic guns or magazines, even I have to admit they are an improvement in this case.

Would the TAVOR be a good rifle for the USA to adopt? Yes it would. Just like the XM-8 would have been (with a little change in the materials to overcome that slight melty issue) or the FN SCAR (the H version, please) or the XCR. (but the XCR would have required a whole new factory to produce them because RobArms just flat out doesn't have the capacity for the volume that would be required.) The USA could take advantage of our relationship with Israel and jump on board with a TAVOR chambered in 6.5 Grendel. That would be easy to do, wouldn't cost as much some of the other options, and strengthen ties to a friendly nation. The best thing about the TAVOR is that it's been a long time in development that includes actual combat testing. That stuff is all done. All we need to do is to roll with it.

The only other western nations that are using bullpup rifles right now are England and France with the SA-80 and the FAMAS. And Austria and Australia with the Steyr AUG. (please refrain from laughing at the AU countries using an AU Gun) Neither of those rifles have proven to be all that wonderful, but they do have some advantages in handling. The SA-80 was reworked by HK in an attempt to improve reliability, but accuracy is fantastic. The FAMAS isn't really that great at anything but looks the coolest. The AUG however has been the best of the Bullpup breed for a long time, unless of course you look at one of the Australian made examples... which can sometimes fire by just bumping the butt of it. (There was a report last year or so about a trooper killed when the truck he was riding in hit a bump while the soldier was holding it with the butt of the rifle on the floor of the truck and the muzzle up – no finger near the weapon. It went off and shot the trooper through the head) It looks like the TAVOR may have sorted out all the bullpup's shortcomings and added some nice strengths... like both reliability and accuracy together in the same gun.

I'm not saying we should adopt it. I'm saying it's not a bad option. While bullpups have advantages, I'm really not that big on them. I was when I was younger and impressed with the swoopy lines. Just like I was impressed with the Lamborghini Countach and Pamela Anderson. But then I grew up and acquired some maturity and actual taste. I'd rather have a BMW Z4M and Monica Bellucci. NSFW. Sorry. BTW, that's one of my favorite automotive video reviews. “It's a monster!” Then there is the bit after he tastes the pepper and gets back to driving... his eyes are still watering. Awesome.

1-5-08:  Long Weekend: Aaahh Yeah. I'm on a long weekend now... this means I'll be coyote hunting until I go back to work Wednesday. This is the first long weekend I've had in a while now.... and I'm itching to go predator hunting. No other hunting gets me jazzed.... there is nothing like hunting the hunters. Coyotes force you to use all your wits and skills. They have great eyesight, they have great noses, and they can be deadly cunning. I'm ready. I just have to take some time to do the whole baby blessing thing at church, and then I'll plan my predator ambushing.

MHI: Monster Hunter International is on Amazon now. Guys, I'm dead serious here – you will LOVE this book. More than any other work of fiction – you will enjoy every single page. Most guys that have read it that I know, read the whole thing in one or two sittings. I myself read the whole thing cover to cover in one sitting. I started it at about 8 PM and finished it in the wee hours of the morning having slept naught. (no I'm not a speed reader when I am savoring the flavor of the verse) I remember how much I liked it then, and I envy all of you who get to read it for the first time. Buy this book, ASAP. Larry is a great guy, give him some support, buy the book. You will not be disappointed. Not in the slightest. You will only be disappointed when, at the end, you turn the page and there is no more. Only then will you be left wanting.

Emails have come in about my music selections. Generally they are positive but I did get taken to task about calling AC/DC “Metal”. It's “Classic Rock” now I guess... or Hard Rock... Don't get too caught up in the titles... titles are ultimately meaningless. Our man Neil brought up some of the ladies of the 80's bands... and that lead me back to my ultimate adolescent fantasy gal, Susana Hoffs of The Bangles. Those eyes could take my breath away. Still do, maybe? Watch this. Oh yeah... still.

Asus Eee: I want to get one of these for each of my boys. Check this out. Well, at least for my 3 oldest sons. What these are, are simple little mini laptops. What makes them cool is that they are using a solid state hard drive, meaning they don't have a hard drive, but use an array of flash memory instead of the traditional spinning metal platters which are kind of an outdated technology now, isn't it? This allows the lappy to be very light (only 2 pounds verses the average 6), and very energy efficient... and that means longer – much longer – battery life. I would like to get an 8 gig version for travel blogging purposes. I could throw that in a backpack and jump on a motorcycle and blog America from two wheels and wireless. That's a dream of mine. I like the fact that it's a linux system, which means no spyware and virus issues. It's not much more than these new fancy dancy E-Readers to read books on. And you can do a hell of a lot more than just E-Read with them. Love them. But I'll need 3 of them for my older boys, one for the wife, and one for me, just because. So I'll take 5, thanks.

I'm not the only one that doesn't like Huckabee. This guy is a vet, respect him. While I don't agree with this guy so much, I respect his opinion and his right to say it. And he makes some good points. More on that in a second... Now in this guy's clip, we hear Ron Paul vent his spleen. You know what? I'm not liking Ron Paul any more. I know I don't like Huckleberry... but now I don't like Ron Paul anymore either. He's close, but misguided. I like the constitutionality view point, but I don't like the isolationist intent. Our world has become a hell of a lot smaller. I get messages daily from cats around the world about stuff I just posted that day. The globe watches the rest of the globe and our little blue oceans are no longer insulation against the outside. Ron Paul is like the kid that pulls the blanket over his head to keep out the thunderstorm. It's still storming out there, and ignoring it isn't doing a damn thing to help it. Ron Paul is not the president we need now. Not yet. Not ever. At the same time I don't want another fascist sell out like what we've had for the last 16 years. We need someone that can be conservative, be a global leader, and strengthen our Nation to be what we – what I believe America can be. I'm liking two candidates now... Fred Thompson and Mitt Romney. Now that would be the White House Dream Team right there. Mitt in the Oval Office crunching numbers and Fred sitting at the head of Congress keeping shit straight.

Back to the Solider. My bros are over there in the Sand Box. When they got there, they arrived with 15 armored HUMVEES. Guess how many they have still operational. 3. They are over there harshing it out with broken equipment, shoddy and straight up shitty weapons like the M-4 Carbine. If the Government can't keep our troops equipped and ready to fight, then they need to pull the troops out of harm's way and regroup and refit and reload. Get them read for the next task, what ever that may be. Since G'Kar died, I've been worried a great deal about my brothers... I've been praying for them in earnest. They are in a safe location, relatively speaking... but safe locations foster complacency and that can lead to sudden violent awakenings. It only takes one guy to fall asleep at his post – and everyone is screwed.

Email: About three years ago I found a .22 LR Single Six in a gunshop with the awesome price of $129.99 tagged on it. I couldn't not buy it. I found that the tag was incorrect, the revolver actually being .22 Magnum. I searched for a .22 LR cylinder for six months to no avail, finally finding one in stainless at a gun show. I paid a nice crisp $50 bill for it. When I got it to a range to test fire it, all went well and it is now one of my favorites. I think the stainless cylinder in the blue frame is one of the handsomest combinations I've ever seen in a single action revolver. Not "Pimped" at all, simply handsome. I still have no idea why this revolver was tagged so low, another in the same case was priced $110.00 higher. It is a very nice gun and has a decent trigger into the bargain. I shoot the .22 LR cylinder most of the time, but use the .22 Mag. cylinder when hunting and fishing. Both are more accurate than I am. Ya just gotta love the Ruger Single Six. Gerry

The fact that I don't have one is a HUGE oversight. Not just an oversight, but frankly, just stupid on my part.
I used to have one when I was a kid. Loved it more than any other bit of property. Had it until I went into the Army and never seen it since. Never purchased another one either. I'll be fixing that for my birthday, I think. $129? You stole it.... Totally thefted hard. The seller was a moron. I'd have snatched that too. I've been kinda waiting for one to come in on trade, but they never do. Ever. I've been at the gun shop for what, 2 years now? Have not seen one come in yet.

My bro Shin Tao has sent us a gem of an idea to improve the effectiveness and utility of the M-4 Carbine. Mount one of these under the barrel. Think about it.

Fenris, aka, my bud Ben has finally posted something we talked about the other night. His suggested reading list. Understand a little about Ben. Ben is the guy English Professors turn to. I'll leave it at that. He's taking one course, and the Prof said “You can read anything you want, Ben.” So Ben selected HP Lovecraft. Nice. His suggestion of any Lovecraft is spot on, but a bit broad and will leave the uninitiated overwhelmed. Let me make some specific suggestions to help get you started. One that I suggest to Ben to tap into as muse for one of the projects he's working on, is Shadow over Innsmouth. Another that I really like and would love to see as a movie – but only if done as exactly true to the story as possible – is At the Mountains of Madness. And of course, The Call of Cthulhu. Yes, rather obvious choices there, but those are the three MUST READS for Lovecraft virgins. Now if you start reading these and think they sound familiar – LOVECRAFT WROTE IT FIRST! Lovecraft is the American Writer Godfather. Every writer needs to study Lovecraft, carefully.

1-4-08:  OH DAMN! G'Kar was killed in Iraq yesterday. He wrote a goodbye note, just in case. Looks like the note was needed. Try to keep dry eyes reading his last post. Damn. Double Damn....

The Huckster: Our friend Steve sent us this picture. I think this is all that needs to be said. I rest my case.

More on Ruger: They just announced some very interesting news. Read this. They have purchased back shares of their own stock, have come out of debt, and have a cool 35 million burning a whole in their pocket. Do you know what this means? It means Ruger is going to be on the covers of a lot more gun magazines in the future. They have money to improve existing products (Mini-14 again, please... and fix the SR-9's trigger!) and bring out some new guns.

Dear Ruger, you are doing well in so many areas. Congrats. But when it comes to Concealed Carry, you fail. Your only CCW offering is the SP-101. That's it. Sure you have different flavors of the little revolver... but not everyone wants a little revolver. Look at your new SR-9 pistol. The example I've tested has the worst trigger I've ever felt. This might be a manufacturing thing, or you might just have a bad trigger system in there. Because I've looked at 3 other and they all just suck. Please, for the love of all that is holy, sort that out. Now with a good trigger in place, take your SR9 and erase about a third of the barrel and grip frame. Chop it down and you have your next big hit. It would be a home run. Do it. Don't think about it, just get it done. You would do very well in the market with something like that. Also, your No. 1 rifle. Love it. Is there a way you could make it exchange barrels like the new Knight and the TC Encore rifle? Even the little H&R Topper can exchange barrels. I know about the #1's strength and accuracy... but if you could make it swappable – that would be EPIC.  Another nice improvement to the good old Mini-14 would be to change it to allow the use of M-16 style magazines.  If you want to keep making good money on mags, just make a decent M-16 mag, price it nice and low, and you'll sell them by the truck load.  Because everyone knows the GI mags blow, the plastic ones are spendy and the HK made mags are just so stupidly expensive for no other reason that they are made by HK.  Make a steel GI mag and put the Ruger Logo on it - done.  Every day I'm asked about .17 versions of your 10/22. Magnum Research is doing it... but it's expensive. Make the 10/22 into a .17 and you'll sell them by the ton. Hugs and kisses, Ogre.

1-3-08:  Guns and Politics: The guns part first. Just for giggles I took a Stainless Ruger Single Six and a Blued Ruger Single Six and swapped pins and cylinders. The Stainless frame with the Blued pin and cylinder looked okay. The Blued frame and the Stainless pin and cylinder looked awesome. In fact, it looked so dang sharp... I'm going to have to get one like this. Then a thought hit me. I want a 4” Ruger Super Redhawk... I'm going to have to order one with blued frame and stainless pin and cylinder. Simple black grips, or a little dressier, ebony wood grips. That's just a sharp look. When I swapped pins and cylinders, The Travis commented that it looked too “pimp”. I think it looked stunningly handsome. The Single Sixes looked awesome, so I tried it again with the Super Blackhawks, and the bigger un-fluted cylinders look even better with the contrasting colors. Yeah, I'm going to put a call in to Ruger and see if I can order the gun just like that from the factory. Because you can't just swap cylinders because of timing issues. The action and cylinders have to be tuned together.

Now about the politics. Huckabee is a bad winner. Listening to his speech after winning the Iowa caucus just turned my stomach. The man spewed cliché on top of cliché and in effect said nothing of importance or anything to change my opinion of him. I think Huckabee is a hate filled bigot and I do not like him. He will never get my vote. I might vote against the Democrat, but I will not ever vote for Huckabee.

You take the Average IQ, and from that point on up, you have smart people. Below that, they voted for Obama. The guy refuses to salute the flag and wont refuses to wear the flag pin on his suit. I don't care about the pin... but when the flag goes up and you are American – you salute the damn flag. And Iowans just put this guy in the #1 slot for the Dems. Unbelievable. Iowa just really disappointed me tonight. This must be why the politicians like Iowa so much... they are such a gullible people. A guy that hates America and a guy that hates everyone not like him... nice. Hate wins in Iowa. Bloody pathetic. Iowa just beat Kansas as my least favorite State.

The more I hear Fred Thompson talk, the more I like him. A Thompson - Romney ticket would be awesome. Ron Paul isn't a realistic candidate anymore so wistfully thinking of a Libertarian in the White House is useless and you might as well be tossing off in the shower. Romney would be the ideal candidate for me if he would just grow a dick about the gun issue. Guns are not an issue in America... at least not for Americans.

Scare: I went to Staples and picked up a RAM upgrade. When I put it in, the laptop just beeped and did nothing. Wrong RAM. Labels said the RAM was one thing, but the stickers on the RAM said it was different. So I throw back in my old RAM, and just beeps again. WTF? Well, this wont do. Not only will it not do, but it freaked me the hell out. I was in a panic. So I go back to Staples, talk to manager, and the guy pulls out a couple different sticks of RAM. It works perfectly. Hordcaster booted and is running solid and fast. Now check this out – this different RAM was less than half the price of the RAM I purchased first. So I got a big fat chunk of my money back. Now how come this other RAM wasn't out on display? Weird.

Scope Email: George: I want to thank you for your "top scope picks". I took them to our Gander Mountain Store (I know, I know but when that is all you have in town......) and the gun guy said that he had to agree with almost every one of your picks, he was pretty impressed and asked for your web site. I purchased a Burris Fullfield II 4.5-14 42mm for my Savage Model 10 .308. I got a pretty good deal through MidwayUSA, it came with a free Burris 12-24, 50mm spotting scope which will be going to my granddaughter to use as a telescope. For my Remington 700 .308, I got the Leupold VX-III 4.5-14, 50mm with the B&C reticle. Now, If this damn weather would only clear up for a couple of days, maybe I could get to the range and try these puppies out. Again, thanks for the great information, without it I would probable still be fumbling around trying to make a decision on which scope to buy, and end up buying the wrong one. Congrats (A little late) on the new little one. I don't know how you do it. We have one son, and when we found out what caused it, we quit doing it. Just kidding, the son was just back here from Guam to go to a special armorer's school at Crane Indiana for special ops weapons. When he showed me the pictures and the movies of the weapons that they worked on and got to shoot, I pretty much died of envy. .300 WinMag sniper rifles, .50cal sniper rifles, H&K subs, miniguns, and grenade launchers. They got to shoot everything except the grenade launchers. Some people have all the luck. Thanks again for the info. - AndyJ

Thanks for the email, Andy. As more scopes come out or if manufacturing changes, I'll change that list as needed. Any alteration will be mentioned here first of course. Looks like you've made some good scope picks yourself. Good matches to the guns and calibers. Well done.

1-02-08:  Hellgate: London: I'm impressed with this game. The game play is amazing. The environments and the general vibe are incredible. The character classes, the leveling, it's all very well done. But the game mechanics are needing some tweaking. They need to patch the game because the guns are ridiculous. Long range is 20 yards. I can spit watermelon seeds further than that. Your character, a “Marksman” is packing a “20MM Heavy Rifle”. 20 whole millimeters... the thing shoots coke bottles. You never have to reload, but after 25 yards the projectiles evaporate. Just gone. They don't drop or lose power... they just vanish. Yet the volt rifle, that shoots a constant arc of electricity is more accurate, longer range, and more powerful. WTF? Then there is the sniper rifle, sure it's slow and has longer range... but it's weak as hell and is less accurate than anything else in the game. Look, I know a game about demons taking over London is a fantasy and a metaphor for the Labor Party, but it's still bloody annoying when you have huge Earth shattering weapons and they can't hit a target that's on the other side of the street. Don't give me any of that Game Balance bullshit, because if you wanted the guns to be less than effective, give the trooper an M-4 Carbine. Downsize the gun if it's too powerful. Because what you Hellgate developers did was just make the game freaking silly. Your Evoker class is just stupid. It starts out fine, but you end up not able to deal with... anything that's above level 6. Upgrade your weapons all you want, but it's not going to help you one damn bit.  Really, the game is all about the swords. You can tell the game makers have a hard on for swords... because that 20MM Heavy Rifle, which looks like something ripped off an armored personnel carrier, wont do anything to a demon but leave itchy scratches... but you can gut it and quarter it with a sword in two swings.

Salad for dinner: Maybe I'm maturing or just getting soft, but it used to be that if you put a salad in front of me while I was sitting at a dinner table, I'd grab my jacket and head out for a burger or something. Last Sunday night, we had salad for dinner. And I actually enjoyed it. Had two plate fulls which probably defeats the purpose of eating salad in the first place. It was a salad that didn't have any iceberg lettuce in it. Other forms of leafy greens, meats, cheeses, all that good stuff, but no iceberg. I've come to the conclusion that it's iceberg lettuce all along that I've hated. I don't even like it on sandwiches.  Anyways, today I'm sitting here wishing I had some more of that salad.  I know, I think I should call my doctor or something.

Music email: there was lots of good metal in the 80s. van halen, metallica, ozzy osbourne, iron maiden, judas priest, megadeth, AC/DC, and queensryche were all putting out major albums. that was a peak era for metal. i don't know about the other gun nuts but you can talk about music anytime as far as i'm concerned. music used to be so good and now it sucks. - Jody

Thanks for the email, Jody. Yes... that's true. We did have some groups come into their own during the 80's. But we also had Motley Crue, Poison, Cinderella, Ratt, Skid Row, and other bands that sucked so hard it made Bill Clinton raise an eyebrow. The best ones, Ozzy, AC/DC and the others actually started in the late 70's so they get a pass even when they went through the Big Hair stage, like Queensryche did. Def Leppard and a couple others were the 80's only surviving grace. (Queensryche officially started in 81, but all the members came from other bands from the 70's so they get a pass on that too) Even our cars sucked in the 80's. Everything sucked in the 80's. It's a scientific fact. You know about Black Holes? They popped up in the 80's - that's how bad it was back then.

Ruger's new SR9 again: I got a lot of emails saying that the trigger pull on the SR9 is decent if you leave the magazine in the gun. Yes, I know this... the reason for this is the magazine disconnect safety because if you dry fire it with an empty mag well, the striker is actually being blocked. With the mag in, you get the full pull and follow through. But it still sucks. It stacks like a Tetris Bastard all the way to the gritty as a crime novel break... but what really makes it horrible is the sudden release, long over travel to a sudden slap at the frame. This makes it almost impossible to keep your front sight post on target while you dry fire. If you can't dry fire it this way, how the hell can you shoot accurately with it? Guns and Ammo has a lipstick smeared review of it and it's on the cover. The author is right – it's the best looking auto pistol Ruger (center fire) that Ruger has ever made... but the dude is off his rocker when he talks about the trigger. 6.5 pounds? I put it to a scale this morning. It's actually a hair over 9 pounds. Seriously. Nine Pounds. That's not a trigger, that's a sack of potatoes. That's a bag of kitty litter. That's not a trigger pull for a gun that is supposed to be taken seriously. Of course the guy did claim 12,000 rounds of ammo fired. Maybe he tested the pull after all 12K rounds. Okay. But that's 240 boxes of ammunition at 18.99 bucks a box... that's $4557.60 worth of ammunition before sales tax. Good luck with that. You know that the author didn't pay for that much ammo... G&A isn't paying for that much ammo. Who did? Ruger did. If Ruger did, then you know there is a little bias going on there promoting the SR-9. I'm sick the deceptions that gun magazines pull to promote a new pistol. If you read the article with an open eye, you can see the carefully worded lines. “In the author's pre-production test gun” and such things... what he's basically telling you is that this isn't the gun you are going to be able to buy. Please, read gun reviews responsibly. Buyer beware.
